Where will the nation’s top uncommitted players sign?

This is obviously the question on everybody’s mind. Some of these blue-chip battles are easier to predict than others. Ones I’m eager to see shake out include…

Does the nation’s top cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. head to long-time favorite LSU or has Alabama changed things down the stretch?

Several programs feel like they have a chance to land 247Sports No. 1 offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere. Following this weekend’s official to Ohio State he’ll decide between the Buckeyes, Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame. I think it will be Notre Dame or the Gators unless this trip to Columbus changes things.

Will Top247 cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart stay in-state and suit up at USC or can Alabama, Texas A&M or Tennessee lure the blue-chipper from the West Coast. My 247Sports Crystal Ball forecast is currently on the Trojans.

Top247 offensive guard Penei Sewell took all his officials early in hopes of putting pen to paper during the Early Signing Period. He wasn’t able to come to a decision. Alabama, Oregon and USC all remain in the mix as the U.S. Army All-American will end up going to the final day in trying to figure out his future.

The battle for the No. 1 class

Those tight recruiting battles will decide who wins the 247Sports Recruiting National Championship.

Three teams appear to be in play.

A new champion appears likely.

Ohio State is narrowly ahead of Georgia at No. 1, with Alabama sitting back at No. 6. However, the Tide is still within striking distance of a No. 1 finish for an eighth straight years, given the targets they have left on the board.

The Buckeyes’ top targets remaining are Petit-Frere and Top247 offensive tackle Rasheed Walker. Over in Athens, Georgia is considered the heavy favorite for five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell while also battling for Top247 five-star linebacker Quay Walker, among others. Alabama is working to keep Walker in the fold and besides Petit-Frere, Surtain and Taylor-Stuart, the Crimson Tide has the longest line of ballyhooed recruits of the three still in play including receivers Jaylen Waddle and Justyn Ross.

The battle for National Recruiter of the Year

Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee has sat at No. 1 for much of the cycle. He was key in the Bulldogs landing Justin Fields, Jamaree Salyer, Zamir White and Brenton Cox. Right behind him is … Bulldogs offensive line coach Sam Pittman. He was also in on Salyer and recruited Trey Hill and Cade Mays. Those guys are in the clubhouse with Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford and Texas cornerbacks coach Jason Washington Nos. 3 and No. 4. The two that could possibly challenge McGee are sitting at No. 5 and No. 6 in USC’s Johnny Nansen and Alabama’s Tosh Lupoi. Both are the lead recruiter on a couple more blue-chippers.

Who will flip?

Every cycle there’s always a late steal or two. A few of the high-profile ones include Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn working to flip linebacker Quay Walker from Alabama. Longtime Miami defensive tackle commit Nesta Silvera took a couple late visits to Florida and Tennessee. Clemson is in there with Gators offensive line commit Richard Gouraige. Georgia is also in the mix for in-state linebacker Otis Reese who is a longtime pledge to Michigan.

Curious of the 2017 class superlatives , if you could TS, or anyone I would appreciate it. Apologies for being lazy, and tech less.

Edit, hit auto correct for superlatives, and it just went nuts.

Saw where Schiano is going back to the NFL to Patriots as DC. Might help with PF? Read where his HS coach has history with Schiano from TB Bucs.

Yeah, that may help a lot. His HS coach has been influencing NPF's mom toward OSU & UF lately. Saban is working on it. Looks like Meyer knew Schiano was likely to go back to the NFL, since he hired WSU DC Alex Grinch weeks ago.

Am I missing something or are they forecasting the same thing?

They forecasted the same on those four. I don't expect their picks to differ on any Bama targets between now and NSD.

Aside from that article posted earlier, there appears to be some chatter about JJ Peterson flipping to the Tide. I haven't seen anyone on TI mention this. It is interesting though.

Seems kind of odd in a way that some of these coaches can actually be good friends in the off season and pre game, but be such backstabbing sons of bitches on the recruiting front.

I think Probst is likely blowing smoke to create NSD publicity for Pruitt/UT beating UA for JJ Peterson, though the flip happened weeks ago.

Nation’s No. 1 CB Patrick Surtain Jr. talks Alabama, LSU ahead of Signing Day decision

quote:

Patrick Surtain Jr., the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the 2018 class, will have Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Miami hats on the table when he makes his decision on National Signing Day this Wednesday.

Alabama is hoping to add Surtain to 4-star prospects Jalyn Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Saivion Smith, who all signed during the early signing period. The Crimson Tide have chipped away at LSU’s lead over the past several months, and it seems like his decision is going to come down to the SEC West schools.

What did Alabama do to close the gap on LSU?

“Nothing much. I just needed to visit them, take the official [visit] and I enjoyed myself there,” Surtain told SEC Country.

LSU led for the majority of his recruitment because Surtain said he felt comfortable with the atmosphere and environment. One of the reasons for that is because Surtain has a lot of family living in Louisiana.

But even with him declaring LSU as his leader for over a year, he never committed to the school. Surtain said the reason for that is because he started to like other schools when he started taking visits. Surtain said he didn’t want to commit early and then have to reopen his process back up.

With a decision coming on Wednesday, Surtain said he still isn’t sure which school he’s going to end up picking. He’s hoping to have that decision made up on Monday night.

“It’s kind of stressful right now, but it’s decision time, so it’ll come,” Surtain said. “I’ve got an idea, but I’ve still got to sit down and make [the decision].”

Alabama will have to replace every single starter in the secondary heading into next season. The Tide also failed to sign a true cornerback in the 2017 class. The opportunity for early playing time is there in Tuscaloosa, but Surtain said what each school’s depth chart looks like is not going to be a factor.

“I’m just really going in to compete,” he said.

The Tide lost defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to the Oakland Raiders at the end of the season, but Surtain has formed a relationship with new DBs coach Karl Scott already. Surtain said he “sort of got a good relationship with him.”

But it helps Alabama’s chances with Surtain because Nick Saban has a big role in coaching the secondary.

“It’s a great thing when the head coach will most likely be around the DBs,” Surtain said. “He knows a lot about what to expect out of his DBs and he makes them play at a high level.”

Both Alabama and LSU offer lots of similar things to Surtain, but he said the one thing that the Tide have over the Tigers is, “Obviously, one program wins more. That’s probably the biggest [thing].” And he said the one thing LSU offers over Alabama is his ties to his family in Louisiana.

So, in the end, from an outsider’s perspective, it seems like Surtain’s decision is going to come down to comfortability or the possibility at competing for championships.

He broke down the reasons for why he’d choose either school.

On LSU: “Just because of my relationship and my Louisiana ties with my family being there. Me and [defensive backs] Coach [Corey] Raymond, we’ve got a great relationship and I feel like I can ball and have a great influence on Louisiana, too.”

On Alabama: “Just the culture, the winning culture and I feel like I could ball there, as well.”

We’ll know what Surtain decides to do on Wednesday when he’s scheduled to make his decision known during the 10 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU.
