Offensive line
Departing: Bradley Bozeman, JC Hassenauer
Returning: Jonah Williams, Ross Pierschbacher, Lester Cotton, Alex Leatherwood, Jedrick Wills, Dallas Warmack, Brandon Kennedy, Richie Petitbon, Joshua Casher, Scott Lashley, Deonte Brown, Chris Owens, Elliot Baker, Kendall Randolph, Hunter Brannon
Signed: Tommy Brown, Emil Ekiyor
Top targets: Nicholas Petit-Frere, Penei Sewell
Alabama only lost two offensive linemen after the 2017 season and returns a whopping 15 to go along with its two signees. But that isn’t stopping offensive line coach Brent Key and company from trying to add two of the country’s best in Petit-Frere and Sewell.

Departing: Da'Ron Payne, Da'Shawn Hand, Josh Frazier, Jamar King
Returning: Raekwon Davis, Isaiah Buggs, Quinnen Williams, Johnny Dwight, LaBryan Ray, Phidarian Mathis
Signed: Stephon Wynn, Christian Barmore
Top targets: Bobby Brown, Malik Langham
Much like the offensive line, a team can never have too many defensive linemen. But in UA’s case, it actually needs newcomers to provide depth with three contributors leaving for the next level. Brown is currently committed and likely to remain that way through Feb. 7, but adding a couple of defensive linemen on the second round of signings would be welcomed.

Inside linebacker
Departing: Rashaan Evans, Shaun Dion Hamilton
Returning: Mack Wilson, Dylan Moses, Keith Holcombe, Joshua McMillon, VanDarius Cowan, Markail Benton
Signed: None
Top targets: Quay Walker, JJ Peterson, Vernon Jackson
Inside linebacker is in a similar boat, as whichever player is brought in will provide depth behind Wilson and Moses next year. And as we saw this past season, the more healthy linebackers the better, because the injury bug can bite at any time. Walker and Jackson are currently committed to Alabama, and the former’s recruitment has been one of the more difficult ones to find a pulse on.

Cornerback
Departing: Anthony Averett, Levi Wallace, Tony Brown
Returning: Trevon Diggs, Shyheim Carter, Jared Mayden, Nigel Knott
Signed: Saivion Smith, Josh Jobe, Jalyn Armour-Davis
Top targets: Patrick Surtain Jr., Tyson Campbell, Isaac Taylor-Stuart, Eddie Smith
Losing all three of its starters at cornerback and Star, Alabama signed three corners during the early signing period. But including the three departing safeties, the Tide will look to add more at the defensive back position -- and its sights are still set on some elite corners.
“We still feel like we’re recruiting several other defensive backs,” Saban said on Dec. 20. “We’re probably going to lose five, maybe more, so we would like to replace that many guys. Whether that’s going to be possible or not, I don’t know. I know that we’re recruiting several other guys are very good players that may be able to contribute to it.”

We offered a preferred walk-on spot to a 2018 in-state WR from Blount High School. John Garcia wrote an article about sleepers in-state a few days ago and Woods was mentioned:

Prichard (Ala.) Blount WR Collins Woods
The Latest: Woods was committed to the previous coaching staff at Louisiana-Lafayette before opening up the process. Navy brought him in on a visit since that point and stands to be in good shape at this time. Woods has racked up more than a dozen offers, including many in the Ivy League.
Quick Take: Between the ears, Woods can have his pick of a college football program, armed with his GPA well over 4.0 and 26 ACT. As a wide receiver, he is a long and lean route-runner with a lot of production behind his last few years at Blount High. He has grit about his game and there is a sense he could be a steal late in the cycle because of his intellect, long frame and competitiveness. His father played at Tulane.

This year’s Alabama junior draft class and the last kind of proved there is something to the recruiting rankings. Last year Allen Humphrey Howard and Foster all went first round and were all 5 stars. Robinson went early 2nd was a 5 Star. This year Fitzpatrick Ridley Payne and Evans were all 5 stars and will be first rounders. Tony brown and da’shawn band didn’t pan out like the others but I can’t remember the last player that was drafted first round for us that wasn’t a 5 Star. Maybe Ryan Kelly

NSD 2018: Coaches who will be in spotlight
quote:
The back stretch to National Signing Day 2018 has commenced and despite the Early Signing Period creating a shallow player pool, the storylines are plentiful. At the center of many such stories are head coaches in pursuit of their programs’ lifeblood.
Today, Rivals.com takes a look at some coaches to watch as National Signing Day approaches.

Nick Saban - Alabama
This is not Saban’s best class. Not by a long shot. Still, college football’s most famous coach coming off a national championship season is as dangerous as ever. It seems possible that Alabama finishes outside the top five for the first time since 2007, but it also seems possible that the Tide steal some prospects considered to be leaning toward other programs.
Saban could do some work in Florida down the stretch and could conceivably swipe Patrick Surtain away from LSU, Nick Peteit-Frere away from Florida and land four-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland, who was committed to the Gators not so long ago.

I think Saban probably learned his lesson in hiring a less than elite recruiting staff last year. Recruiting had gone so well for so long that he may have assumed our brand would recruit itself. He seems to have fixed it now with all the new hires, but some damage has already been done. This class looks like a solid, but not great class for us. Hope I'm wrong come Wednesday!

2020 Alabama linebacker Jackson Bratton already a name to know
So it took a Class of 2020 kid spilling the beans to inform us what position Golding would be coaching.

A glance at the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State team revealed several underclassmen stars in the making, including Jackson Bratton.
The Muscle Shoals (Ala.) linebacker was a second-team selection as the tone setter of a defense that held three opponents in single digits in 2017. The sophomore is beginning to hear from college football's elite within state lines.
"I went on a visit to Alabama this month," he said. "I was the only person there that wasn’t committed to 'Bama yet, but them and Auburn are the main ones recruiting me right now.
"The visit was great, I sat down and ate lunch with the new inside linebacker coach, which is coach (Pete) Golding, and he stayed with me pretty much the whole afternoon. I sat with him in the parade also. I love the attention they give to me, it’s pretty awesome."
The Crimson Tide coaches had ample time to detail why the 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker is on radar.
"They said they liked how I run sideline to sideline and make tackles," Bratton said. "They said I get off of blocks really well and that they liked how I was aggressive and go full speed.
"And they also said they like my patience staying in the box. I went to their camp and we mainly did 7-on-7 stuff and I ran a really good 40 time. They liked how I was physical with the backs in 1-on-1s."
The impressive class of 2020 prospect will be back in Tuscaloosa in February as he begins hearing from programs outside the state like Memphis, Southern Miss and others. His lifelong fandom to the Crimson Tide may one day transition to a scholarship offer from Nick Saban and company.
"I’ve always been a 'Bama fan but now that I’m get recruited, I’m really just open to everyone," Bratton said. "Alabama keeps telling me that I’m gonna get the chance to play there if I keep doing what I’m doing but they haven’t thrown the offer out there yet. But Alabama acts like they are the most interested.
"I’ll be going to 'Bama on February 24 for sure."
The only other visit on radar is to the program's Iron Bowl rival.
"I just talked to coach (Kevin) Steele and I’ve got a visit lined up for March 3rd at Auburn," he said.
So it took a Class of 2020 kid spilling the beans to inform us what position Golding would be coaching.

I get bashed for wanting 5 stars. Its not everything but they are 5 stars for a reason and usually do pan out. Not all make it but the percentage must be high. Im not worried as I think we will have a top 2 class next year

We got a CB for Isaac Taylor-Stuart from a Texas mod.

It's undeniable that 5-stars turn out to be stars at a much higher percentage than 4-stars, the same hold true for 4-stars over 3-stars, etc. Recruiting matters, and star--as it turns out--are actually a pretty good predictor for how good that player and the team they play for will end up being. Hopeful we can snag another 5-star or two on NSD.
