What's it like to get offers from Alabama and Auburn on same day? Jackson-Olin LB knows

quote:

Lavonta Bentley tweeted this morning that he expected an "unbelievable, amazing, fantastic day."

He had no idea how prophetic his words would be.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Jackson-Olin linebacker received scholarship offers from Auburn, Alabama and LSU today, having started the week with no offers from Power 5 conferences. He is a junior and part of the Class of 2019.

"It's been great," he said this afternoon. "It feels great to know that these big, SEC schools want me and think I can help their program. ... It's a blessing."

Today's flurry of offers continued a whirlwind week for Bentley.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker started the week as a relatively unknown recruit, a high school junior dreaming of one day playing college football. Then, Oregon offered him a scholarship. Then came an offer from Florida Atlantic, coached by former Alabama assistant Lane Kiffin.

Bentley played at Parker the last two years, logging time at linebacker, fullback and running back. He transferred to Jackson-Olin when the second semester began earlier this month.

Jackson-Olin coach Tim Vakakes said the Mustangs were impressed with Bentley's aggressiveness and toughness when they had to game-plan for him and play against him.

"He's a striker," Vakakes said. "He's a very strong, very physical player. (Parker) Coach (Andre) Robinson and his staff did a heck of a job with him and put him in position to make plays."

In-state, 4-star DE Malik Langham talks Alabama visit, Auburn offer

quote:

Standing next to Alabama's most recent national championship trophy, Malik Langham couldn't help but envision a possible future in Tuscaloosa.

The Lee-Huntsville 2018, four-star defensive end had the chance to pose with the Crimson Tide's title hardware during his official visit to Alabama this past weekend.

"Having the championship trophy in front of you, it was cool; it made me want to be a part of that," he said.

The 6-foot-5 1/2, 265-pound Langham was making the second of four official visits in the lead up to National Signing Day on Feb. 7. He went to Vanderbilt two weeks ago and has upcoming stops at Florida and Tennessee.

The Alabama visit came about seven weeks after the Crimson Tide offered. Langham spent time with defensive linemen LaBryan Ray and Quinnen Williams.

"It went good," Langham said. "I spent more time with the coaches, hung out with the players and got to see the academic side."

And, of course, no Alabama trip would be complete without talking to head coach Nick Saban.

"He's a very genuine guy," Langham said. "He's a business man. He's very calm and collected off the field. He hangs out with everybody and has a good time."

Auburn offered Langham on Friday. He'll be unable to visit the Plains due to his visit schedule being booked.

"It was kind of a surprise because they stopped recruiting me for a long period of time," Langham said. "When it came through, it surprised me."

Among those making a trip to Huntsville to see Langham over the past week were Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Sal Sunseri, and Miami defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski.

Langham reiterated his plan to wait until NSD to announce his choice.

"I just take one thing at a time," he said. "I'm blessed to have all these schools offer and want me. I'm taking my time.

Langham is rated the nation's No. 9 strong-side defensive end and No. 222 overall recruit for 2018 by 247Sports. He is No. 11 on AL.com's A-List of the state's top senior prospects.

Take Two: Will Alabama keep state's top player Justyn Ross home?

quote:

Take Two returns with a daily offering tackling a handful of issues in the college football landscape. Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney lays out the situation and then receives takes from Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and a local expert from the Rivals.com network of team sites.

THE STORYLINE

Five-star receiver Justyn Ross is the top-rated prospect in the state of Alabama and for a long while the Crimson Tide, Clemson and Auburn have made up his top three.

The Phenix City (Ala.) Central standout has seemed to be leaning toward Clemson for some time, but after an excellent visit to Alabama this past weekend, the Crimson Tide could be closing that gap in a significant way. Ross is expected to visit Auburn this weekend and he was at Clemson during the season.

If Ross decides to pick Clemson or Auburn, it would be the first time since 2012 - when five-star QB Jameis Winston picked Florida State - that the Crimson Tide didn’t land the top player in the state. That’s a list that includes Reuben Foster, Marlon Humphrey, Daron Payne, Ben Davis and LaBryan Ray.

Is Ross still leaning toward Clemson? Could Alabama land the state’s top player again, especially after such a great visit to Tuscaloosa? Might Auburn swoop in late and steal him? The battle for Alabama’s top player continues.

FIRST TAKE - ANDREW BONE, BAMAINSIDER.COM

“Ross has been a tough read throughout most of the recruiting process. His top three schools haven't changed much between Alabama, Auburn and Clemson. It seems like a very tight battle between Alabama and Clemson at this time. Alabama rolled out the red carpet for Ross, his mother and grandmother this past weekend in Tuscaloosa. Alabama wide receivers coach Mike Locksley was recently named the Tide's new offensive coordinator. There is a good connection between the two. Alabama wants to keep the top in-state player home. A lot can change between now and Feb. 7, but Alabama may have a slight edge after a great weekend trip.”

SECOND TAKE - MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“Clemson has the lead. He looks at the receivers they produced, he looks at the offense they run, he’s looking at those quarterbacks. Having Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama makes things more attractive and watching what he did in the national championship game, the passing offense is completely different.

“Jalen Hurts probably hurt their chances with Ross. Alabama is probably selling the fact that it’s going to have a passing quarterback and they’re going to open up the offense and pass with Locksley as the new offensive coordinator.

“I still think Clemson has the lead. It has been his leader for a very long time and it has done a much better job of putting receivers in successful positions and it has had more success with receivers in the NFL There is more depth of receivers in the NFL from Clemson than there is from Alabama, though Bama produced Pro Bowlers Julio Jones and Amari Cooper.”

Soooo who do you guys think are the silent commits that John Garcia was talking about on his podcast or was he just speaking in general. He said there are guys silently committed but Ross isn't one of them.

Sounds like insider "speak" to me.

No way he can be seen as wrong and it's is a positive "update" which will be welcomed by the base.

I've been saying this was going to impact recruiting since mid 2016 but was called foolish.

Tua threw the ball better than Clemson qb did and he played a half less. He saw what Tua can do it won't affect anything.

Evidently, the fact that Tua did finally get to play, and played well, is probably the only reason we even have a chance to sign the kid.

As much as and for whatever the reason Saban is so enamored of Hurts, you have to assume he values team morale, recruiting, and a viable offense more.

Yes. I do know there is a quarterback thread, but it also, obviously, impacts recruiting.

Considering while we've had Jalen Hurts as starter we signed Devonta Smith, Henry Ruggs Jerry Jeudy and Tyrell Shavers.... and we led this year for Jaylen Waddle, Jacob Copeland, Justin Watkins...

..and signed Xavier Williams?

Yeah.

I would say you look foolish.

What makes you look even more foolish is the fact you can't just leave that kid alone.

Let this shite go.

Hurts didn't frick your wife and he isn't the reason your life sucks. Damn.

Yet another thread you want to kill with this neverending nonsense.

Guilty dog barks. You are one that said no way it'll happen. What part of "eventually" did you not understand? Those guys that signed last year have been recruited for years, even back when we had a viable offense.

I'll "let it go" when this piece of shite offense changes and becomes an asset to this team rather than a detriment. You know, like the 2nd half of the UGA game, as opposed to the crap we saw in the first half.

Yet another time you want to shout down anybody that disagrees with your opinion, and yet another time that you can't have a discussion without personal attacks.

You should call up the Rivals guy, or better yet, call Justyn Ross and let him know how foolish he is for not wanting to play for an offense like we have had all year, up until the 2nd half of the title game.

This thread isn't about Hurts. He isn't even our starter.

This thread is about the 2018 kids we have coming in this year.

If you can't stay on the topic, take your obsession to the QB thread because we don't want it here.

----------------------------------------------------------

It's an article about recruiting the best wide receiver in the state, a 5 star kid. Tell me again how that's not about recruiting. It absolutely is, but if you want to make it about something else, then go on ahead. You've been doing it for 3 or 4 posts now.
