Watch: Rare footage of Bear Bryant's speech to incoming freshmen

quote:
When Bear Bryant speaks, we all listen.
The winningest coach in Alabama Football history had a way of captivating a room when he entered and ranks among the most respected figureheads of all-time in college football as a decorated champion.
Reddit/CFB has unearthed a rare video of Bryant speaking to Alabama's freshman class in front of chalkboard, guaranteeing his players a national championship in four years by the end of his 2-minute point.
Bryant's speech centers around preparation and providing more effort than your opponent every time a player steps on the field.
"On Saturday, by virtue of the fact you've paid the price, you've learned those lessons and you've worked on the little things, you're willing to give a little extra and beat your opponent," Bryant said.
During his 25-year tenure as Alabama's coach, Bryant won six national championships and 13 conference championships to cement his status as one of college football's legendary leaders.

I guess this will be the new norm with the early signing day. My advice to these kids would be sign because of the school, not the position coach.
Still pissed that kid let Smart bully him into signing early. AU was making up some ground but obviously not enough

Three-Point Stance: Trevor Lawrence, five-star bust factor
quote:
2. FIVE-STAR BUST FACTORS
Some prospects, no matter their ranking, end up being busts at the next level. It happens. If we could accurately forecast busts, then we would obviously tweak our rankings accordingly.
Since we cannot, I'll go over our 33 five-star prospects and rate their potential to end up with a bust label.
I will rank each prospect's bust factor from MEDIUM to LOW. There is no such thing as NONE in this discussion because any play could be a player’s last play. The same goes for HIGH, because we wouldn't give a prospect a five-star ranking if we felt like there was a better-than-good chance of him ending up a bust.
1. QB Trevor Lawrence – LOW – As stated above, he’s the best quarterback I’ve ever seen at the high school level.
2. QB Justin Fields – MEDIUM – The situation at Georgia is an iffy one and he’s a superior talent, but needs some refining in the passing game.
3. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown – LOW – He’s going to be a great receiver, there is no doubt about it. He’s one of the most sure things on the list.
4. QB JT Daniels – MEDIUM – The early jump and a lack of great height and length has him on the medium list, but he’s a special talent.
5. DE Xavier Thomas – LOW – Worth ethic and the ability to play defensive end or grow into a tackle makes him a can’t-miss.
6. DE Micah Parsons – MEDIUM – The only question marks I have are maturity and the move to inside linebacker here. He’s a freak, though.
7. DE Eyabi Anoma – MEDIUM – Maturity is the big question mark, because otherwise he’s a freaky talent.
8. CB Patrick Surtain – LOW – Corners are usually at least medium risk, but Surtain has the size and skill to dominate at either corner or safety.
9. OL Jamaree Salyer – LOW – He’ll be a road grader and likely three-year starter. He could play tackle if needed.
10. RB Zamir White – LOW – Running backs are usually always medium, but if he returns healthy, there’s no way he can miss.
11. OT Nick Petit-Frere – LOW – A freaky athlete, he could play defense if needed and will be successful at either left or right tackle. He’s just starting to scratch the surface.
12. DE Adam Anderson – MEDIUM – A great pass rusher, the only question I have is about his frame.
13. RB Lorenzo Lingard – MEDIUM – The running back factor is here for him as that position seems to have a high bust factor.
14. S Tyreke Johnson – MEDIUM – He’s a big hitter who could play corner or safety, but there are some questions about his consistency as a cover man.
15. WR Justyn Ross – LOW – A tall, angular receiver with great body control, it’s hard to see him busting out.
16. OT Jackson Carman – MEDIUM – Will he be a guard and can he lose some bad weight in college? He has the skill but does he have the dedication.
17. CB Brendan Radley-Hiles – LOW – Despite his lack of great size, he’s a sure thing to be a terrific player.
18. WR Justin Shorter – LOW – His size and speed combination will allow him to dominate at the next level and beyond.
19. OT Cade Mays – MEDIUM – He could be a right tackle or move to guard, but I worry a bit about his footwork.
20. LB Teradja Mitchell – LOW – His tackling ability and instincts should make him a star at the college level.
21. LB Palaie Gaoteote – LOW – Linebackers bust out often but Gaoteote has the range and smarts to be a low risk in this area.
22. RB James Cook – MEDIUM – He has the talent, but could he get caught up in the wash of the depth chart as Georgia continues to add elite running backs?
23. CB Olaijah Griffin – MEDIUM – Does he love football and will he be physical enough and grow out his frame enough to be key in run support?
24. S Caden Sterns – LOW – He’s a hitter, he’s excellent in run support and he is a ball hawk.
25. CB Tyson Campbell – LOW – He takes some risks but he’s too tall and athletic to now be a star at corner or safety.
26. DE K.J. Henry – LOW – High character, great work ethic and a frame to build on with athletic skill, he won’t miss.
27. WR Terrace Marshall Jr. – MEDIUM – He has talent but will he dominate and take over games like he should?
28. WR Mark Pope – MEDIUM – My main question is a lack of great size and that he probably has to be a slot receiver.
29. S Jaiden Woodbey – LOW – Others question his focus and concentration but he’s too much of a freaky athlete to fail.
30. WR Derion Kendrick – LOW – He reminds me of Percy Harvin, he’s that fast around the corner and that will make him dominant.
31. WR Jaylen Waddle – MEDIUM – Like Pope, I worry a bit about his size despite the way smaller receivers are dominating these days.
32. CB Isaac Taylor-Stuart – MEDIUM – He has all the talent and physical skills in the world, but I question his “want to” at times.
33. DE Brenton Cox – MEDIUM – He’s a gamer but the knock against him is the work he puts in during the week so I’ll put him at medium.
This is how I handicapped the bust factor for 2017's five-stars.

Bullying is probably a harsh word (I'm still salty) but I don't believe that he would have lost a spot. I believe Smart sold him on that idea but I think he did that to lock em up. Great move on his part & no doubt how hot ya'll are on the trail he could make that pitch (did same with Tindall). I just don't believe it to be true & wish the kid had stuck with his original plan to sign later
He probably still lands at UGA even if Beamer leaves but at least then the dream for me lasts a little longer

Alabama defensive lineman commit Bobby Brown recaps visit
Bobby Brown was the only Class of 2018 prospect who paid his own way to Tuscaloosa. He didn’t want to miss his future teammates celebrating their latest national championship win.
“It was great,” Brown told SEC Country. “I can’t even put words into what I [was] thinking. I was looking at Da’Shawn Hand and Raekwon Davis after the confetti came down, and I was looking at how happy they were celebrating. I want that.”
Brown brought along several family members and friends to Tuscaloosa this past weekend to take in the festivities. He couldn’t pinpoint what his favorite part of the trip was, but he was happy that he experienced this past visit with so many people closest to him.
The nation’s No. 16 defensive tackle committed to Alabama back in December, shortly after de-committing from Texas A&M. Brown decided to de-commit from the Aggies because of the uncertainty of the coaching staff at the time. He wasn’t sure if defensive line coach Terry Price was going to be retained by Jimbo Fisher. Price ended up being kept by Texas A&M’s staff.
“It was a lot that went into that [decision] and process,” Brown explained as to why he decided to join Alabama’s recruiting class. “It was really the challenge that I’ll be taking on as a man. Coach [Nick] Saban, [outside linebackers] coach [Tosh] Lupoi and [defensive line] coach [Karl] Dunbar have the blueprint to be great. They’re going to challenge me to be my best. The school aspect — I look at the engineering program and what I want to major in — the dean of the engineering program is actually best friends with Coach Saban. That makes it all better.”
Brown committed to the Tide during the last day of the early signing period. He chose not to sign with Alabama because he didn’t realize he could actually sign to any school without having a ceremony. He said if he knew he could have just signed his letter of intent and faxed it to Alabama, he would have done so.
That has allowed the school he was once committed to to keep recruiting him.
“The only school I’m really hearing from is Texas A&M, but if I was to give you an estimate, yes, my recruitment is closed down,” Brown said. “I’m kind of tired of it. I think I really want to stay at Alabama. I think that’s where I want to go. I think Alabama is the right school for me because I know I’m going to go against the best of the best every day. I know I like competition. Competing every day is what I like. I know Coach Saban is going to lay out a foundation, and I can put my brick in that foundation and be able to have my name on greatness.”
The 6-foot-4, 282-pound prospect has been questioned by other schools on why he wants to play for Alabama. Coaches elsewhere are still trying to say true freshmen don’t play at Alabama, but the National Championship Game would say otherwise. If the true freshmen didn’t end up playing against Georgia, it’s my opinion that the Bulldogs roll over the Tide with ease.
Brown knows that the depth on the defensive line in Tuscaloosa heading into next season isn’t that loaded, but even if it was, it wouldn’t both him one bit.
“If I don’t play, it’s my fault,” Brown said. “The only one that dictates playing time in college is the person who is trying to earn playing time. The coach doesn’t dictate anything. It goes through you first before it gets to their desk of how hard you’re working and how much you’re producing.
“I want to earn playing time. I want to earn it. I don’t want to be given anything. If it takes me a year or two years to earn playing time, then so be it. At least I can say I earned it.”
While Brown is definitely one of the more outspoken recruits in the Tide’s 2018 class, he’s not one to pressure other recruits on where they should end up committing. He said he hated when other recruits would tell him which school he should choose when he was figuring out his own process. There were a select few recruits who he’d talk to to gather opinions, but that was it.
He didn’t pressure any of the major targets who were in town this past weekend, but he does have a message for those who are still considering signing with the Tide come National Signing Day.
“If you want to be great, why not come play for the greatest school there is and the greatest coach there is?” Brown said. “If you want to be at the peak of your game and be the best you can possibly be, come play for someone who will get you there.”
Brown will enroll at Alabama this summer. He admits that he hasn’t come up with a set list of goals he wants to accomplish in his first year just yet. But he does know two things that he wants to achieve by the time he leaves school: be remembered and win a championship.
“The main thing when I get to Alabama is I want to make a name for myself,” he said. “I don’t want to be the next Jonathan Allen, the next Myles Garrett, the next Von Miller, the next Jadeveon Clowney or the next J.J. Watt. I want to make a name for myself and my family. That’s my main goal. That’s my biggest goal. I want to be me. I don’t want to be compared to anyone else. I want people to be like, ‘He plays great football. He plays like Bobby Brown. You ain’t never seen anything like this before.’ I want people to be like, ‘Bobby Brown is my favorite player.’ I want to be a household name.”

A few things to know about Alabama's 2018 recruiting class
quote:
Now seems like a good time for a football recruiting reset.
Just 15 days remain before the second signing day of the 2018 cycle hits Feb. 7. This tilted new calendar comes thanks to the new early signing period that began Dec. 20.
Where do things stand two weeks and a day before the faxes roll in again? Let's catch up.
-- Alabama currently has the No. 5 class in the country, according to 247Sports.com. It would take something of a miracle to overtake top-ranked Georgia. That would end the Crimson Tide's streak of seven straight No. 1 recruiting classes dating back to 2011.
-- The Tide signed 15 players in the early signing period. Saban on Dec. 20 said they can only take 23 in this class.
-- It was a big recruiting weekend for Alabama for the national championship celebration. A few of the top uncommitted players in the nation were spotted at Bryant-Denny Stadium including Patrick Surtain Jr. (five-star CB), his high school teammate Tyson Campbell (five-star CB), and Nicolas Petit-Frere (five-star OL). Several of the recruits tweeted pictures from the visits. See them below.
-- There have been questions about how solid Quay Walker's commitment to Alabama is after his primary recruiters moved on to new jobs. The four-star linebacker from Crisp County, Georgia was among those taking visits over the weekend. According to SEC Country, he said he wasn't as comfortable at first without Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley in the program, but warmed up over the weekend and got a lot of attention from Nick Saban. It also looked like Mack Wilson was hosting him on the visit. Walker still has a visit upcoming to Georgia this weekend.
-- Four-star cornerback Taiyon Palmer tweeted about receiving an offer from Alabama over the weekend. He previously decommitted from Duke.
-- Back on the first signing day Dec. 20, Saban was asked how he thought the second part of the 2018 process would go. "I can't tell you because I've never done it before," Saban said at the time. "I just know there's a lot of stuff going on here right now, trying to prepare for a playoff game, trying to recruit. The intensity of recruiting in December and the schedule is much more hectic and much more difficult relative to trying to see more players that you thought were going to sign at midyear, or sign early, maybe even if they weren't midyear guys. It's different. I would say now that we're going to recruit the rest of this recruiting cycle pretty much like it's been in the past. It's just going to be a smaller pool of players. But I can't answer the question because I have no experience with this."
-- Alabama hasn't announced the hiring of new wide receivers coach Josh Gattis, but the Penn State assistant would bring a strong recruiting reputation from the Big Ten. Alabama lost a lot a year ago in terms of recruiting when assistants Mario Cristobal and Billy Napier left for new jobs. Losing Ansley to the Raiders is another blow, but Gattis is a good addition.

Alabama recruiting roundup 1/22/2018: Alabama makes 2018 push | TideSports
quote:
The past weekend was a big recruiting weekend for the Alabama Crimson Tide football program. Alabama hosted 11 recruits, including three five-star players. The recruits this weekend got to witness Alabama’s championship parade on Saturday afternoon, and Nick Saban had a message for them.
Alabama is also heavily focused on 2019 recruits as well as the 2018 prospects. Here is the latest on Alabama’s recruiting prospects.
All star ratings and rankings come from the 247Sports composite:
Alabama found another way to beat Georgia, as cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart changed his plans and now is visiting Tuscaloosa on Jan. 26-28 instead of heading to Athens. He’s the nation’s No. 4 corner and No. 30 recruit overall. The visit will be a big one for Alabama, as the four-star recruit from San Diego is currently seen as a USC lean.
Nick Saban knows how to make an appearance, as he landed a helicopter at Palm Beach Cental High School when visiting five-star cornerback Akeem Dent. Dent has been committed to FSU since July, but Alabama is going to keep on pressing the No. 1-ranked cornerback in the 2019 class.
Alabama and three-star pro-style quarterback Brock Purdy are wasting no time in getting acquainted. The Crimson Tide offered Purdy on Jan. 16 and he is visiting Tuscaloosa next weekend, on Jan. 26. The crystal balls on 247 are already leaning toward Alabama for the quarterback from Gilbert, Arizona. Alabama doesn’t yet have a quarterback commit in the 2018 class.
Alabama offered Khris Bogle, a four-star defensive end recruit from Cardinal Gibbons High School in South Florida on Wednesday. The 11th-ranked defensive end in the 2019 class also has offers from Miami, Clemson and Florida State.
With Alabama’s secondary being depleted after it’s 2017 national championship, the program is still looking for DB help in the 2018 class. Alabama offered four-star safety Julius Irvin this past week. Irvin, from Anaheim, was among the visitors this weekend.
Another recruit from South Florida, 2019 wide receiver Fran Ladson received an offer from Alabama on Thursday. The four-star prospect from Miami has also received offers from Tennessee and Florida State this month.
Three-star 2018 prospect Malik Langham visited Tuscaloosa this weekend. The defensive end from Huntsville posted a picture from his OV, getting a chance to stand next to the 2017 Championship trophy.
Alabama offered another four-star recruit in the 2019 class on Thursday, with Jeremiah Payton receiving an Alabama offer. The wide receiver from Neptune Beach, Fla. is the 15th-ranked wide receiver and the 76th-ranked prospect in the 2019 class.
Five-star linebacker Quay Walker decided to visit Alabama this weekend instead of visiting Georgia, according to 247s Hank South. This would seem to be a major victory for Alabama with Walker already committed to the Crimson Tide. Walker took a picture with linebacker Mack Wilson, who had high praise for Walker.
Alabama made the cut of the top schools for a 2019 safety prospect. Four-star Jaylen McCollough named the Crimson Tide among his top schools for next year. McCollough is the 4-ranked safety and the 59th-overall prospect in the 2019 class.
Wide receiver prospect Justyn Ross got his opportunity to don an Alabama jersey and pose with the trophy this weekend. The four-star wide receiver is the No. 1 ranked player in the state and the 44th-ranked prospect in the 2018 class. He is however seen as a favorite to sign with the Clemson Tigers.
Trevon Diggs, expected to play a major role in the Alabama secondary in 2018, hosted a major recruiting prospect for Alabama this weekend, in Patrick Surtain Jr. Surtain Jr., a 5-star cornerback from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. is likely to sign with LSU, but Alabama had its shot to change his mind this weekend.
Five-star recruits Tyson Campbell (cornerback) and Nicholas Petit-Frere (offensive lineman) both visited Alabama this weekend. Georgia is seen as the favorite to land Campbell, while Florida has emerged as the team to beat for Petit-Frere.
