Recruiting question of the day: Surprise under-the-radar recruit who will sign with Alabama
quote:
First off, it’s a hard question to answer because if Alabama is recruiting a player, is that person truly under-the-radar? I don’t believe so. Anyways, I get what you’re asking here.
There’s usually at least one player who is underrated or overlooked. I think Eddie Smith, a 3-star cornerback from Salmen High School (Slidell, La.) could be that recruit.
Smith is the nation’s No. 66 cornerback in the 2018 class. He was once committed to TCU but de-committed from the Horned Frogs in December. Since then, SEC schools like Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State have shown interest in Smith.
The 6-foot, 178-pound prospect will take an official visit to Alabama next weekend. It’ll be his last trip before he makes his decision on National Signing Day.
Smith named Tennessee his leader after last weekend’s visit to Knoxville. But I feel like that will change once he visits Tuscaloosa next weekend and realizes the opportunity he would have if he signs with Alabama because of how thin the secondary is going to be next season.
I expect Smith to end up signing with the Tide come Feb. 7.

Recruiting question of the day: Confidence level in Alabama landing All-America WR Justyn Ross
quote:
With the WR coach hire, and Tua hosting Justyn Ross, is there even more confidence with him? From @AndyPTA91
Alabama promoted wide receivers coach Mike Locksley to offensive coordinator and Nick Saban decided to hire Penn State passing game coordinator Josh Gattis as the team’s new wide receivers coach. Gattis, like new special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, is another terrific recruiting hire, and he’s considered one of the best at what he does.
While at Penn State, Gattis helped develop Chris Godwin into a second-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DaeSean Hamilton became the school’s all-time leading receiver under Gattis. Gattis also recruited 5-star wide receiver Justin Shorter, who signed with Penn State.
Gattis wasted no time following the Tide’s three biggest targets at the wide receiver position — Jacob Copeland, Jaylen Waddle and Justyn Ross, the latter of which will take an official visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Ross is down to Alabama, Auburn and Clemson. He has already visited Clemson and will visit Auburn next weekend before making his final decision on National Signing Day.
A source told SEC Country recently that he felt like Alabama was going to land Ross. This was before his primary recruiter, Derrick Ansley, left for the Oakland Raiders, though. How that affects Ross is unclear, but it doesn’t hurt that he does have a good relationship with Locksley, who’s now going to call the plays on offense. And it doesn’t hurt that Gattis is regarded as one of the top wide receivers coaches in college football; however, Ross wasn’t being recruited by Penn State, so they’re going to have to quickly develop a relationship.
The Under Armour All-American will be hosted by freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa this weekend. Not a bad person to be your host, right? Tagovailoa has to be one of the most popular, if not the most popular, students on campus these days. Hanging out with Tagovailoa all weekend certainly won’t hurt the Tide’s chances when it comes to landing Ross.
What Tagovailoa, who in my opinion will be the starter next season, did in the championship game definitely opened some eyes to what the Alabama offense can be next season. Entering this visit, there’s definitely confidence on Alabama’s side when it comes to Ross.

Perhaps. Someone (Bama3714?) said Bama likes Copeland's potential at DB too. So, how it goes with top DB tatgets (and other position targets too) may also factor into whether Copeland gets into the 8 remaining spots.

I'm cautiously optimistic we land Surtain and ITS so Copeland may not have a spot regardless.

Alabama interviewed Patrick Surtain, father of the No. 1 unsigned recruit, for a coaching job
quote:
Surtain didn’t get the job. It would’ve been OK if he did.
These things are all simultaneously true of Patrick Surtain: He was an all-pro NFL cornerback who had 37 interceptions during an 11-year career that ended in 2008. He’s absolutely qualified to teach anyone in the world how to play defensive back. And he’s the father of the most hyped cornerback recruit of all time, who’s still uncommitted.
Five-star corner Patrick Surtain Jr. will make his college choice sometime around National Signing Day. Alabama’s one of the many teams that wants him. The Crimson Tide interviewed the elder Surtain this month for their vacant DBs coaching position, before they filled it with UL-Lafayette defensive coordinator Karl Scott.
Surtain explained the interview to Bama’s Rivals site:
“I met with all the people in the office, I met with Coach Saban and his staff. It was actually a great experience for him to even consider me,” Surtain said told BamaInsider.com. “To be a DB coach at Alabama would be a tremendous honor. Eventually it may happen, but I guess it wasn’t the right time.”
Surtain added this, about his famous son’s recruitment:
“That was the first thing I mentioned to Coach Saban,” the older Surtain said. “I told him I didn’t want it contingent on where Pat [Surtain Jr.] comes there or not. That wouldn’t be fair to him. [Saban] assured me that it wasn’t. He interviewed me because he thought I’d be a great defensive backs coach.”
It didn’t work out. But, yeah: Alabama interviewed the father of the class of 2018’s No. 1 unsigned recruit, about three weeks before National Signing Day and probably just days before Surtain Jr. made an official visit to Tuscaloosa. (The date of Surtain’s interview isn’t clear from that report, but it was recent.)
Alabama hiring the elder Surtain would’ve been fine and legal.
He wasn’t just a great player. He’s also his son’s high school coach at American Heritage in South Florida, a talent hub that draws recruiters from all over college football.
Would hiring Surtain help Alabama recruit American Heritage? Probably. Might that have something to do with Alabama’s interest? Sure. But Surtain has every ounce of experience you’d want in a potential college DBs coach. It’s an epic stretch to think that Alabama was only interested in him for his kid, no matter the timing.
There would’ve been no rule against Alabama hiring Surtain, as long as they hired him to an on-field assistant coaching position, like as DBs coach.
The NCAA has strict rules about colleges hiring what it calls “Individuals Associated with Prospective Student-Athletes,” such as a parent or a high school coach. Surtain’s both, in the case of his five-star son. But the rule wouldn’t apply to a DBs coach.
The rule, with some bolding from me:
"In bowl subdivision football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete’s anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete’s actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (either on a salaried or volunteer basis) or enter into a contract for future employment with an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position."
Had Alabama wanted to hire Surtain to a recruiting or development job, the Tide wouldn’t be allowed to recruit Surtain Jr. or any American Heritage players for two years. Any American Heritage players they’d signed in the previous two years would’ve risked losing their eligibility, though Bama’s roster doesn’t list any.
A teammate of the younger Surtain’s, five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell, has also been an Alabama target.
The NCAA adopted that rule in April 2017, with pros and cons.
Previously, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had hired the head coach at New Jersey recruiting power Paramus Catholic, Chris Partridge, to a player personnel role. Later, Michigan signed the class of 2016’s No. 1 overall recruit, defensive tackle Rashan Gary, out of the same Jersey school. Harbaugh later shifted Partridge to an on-field coaching role, but the initial hire — to a recruiting job — is exactly what this rule now outlaws. Harbaugh wasn’t the only college coach who made one.
The rule seems well-intentioned, as a way to prevent coaches from using players to get jobs and to ensure colleges hire candidates on their merits. It’s easy to see how the rule could have downsides, though, for high school coaches who want to ascend the ranks and join the college game. There are plenty of strong college job candidates, like Surtain, who shouldn’t be penalized because their players have gotten recruited.

Alabama signee Latu 'inspired' by Tua, ready to work (embedded interview video)
quote:
Alabama linebacker signee Cameron Latu is in Hawaii this week participating in the Polynesian Bowl.
“It’s really exciting because it’s my last high school game,” Latu told 247Sports’ Blair Angulo at check-in. “Some of my friends that I went to combines with, camps with, it’s going to be cool playing with them before everybody splits off to college. I just want to have some fun out here. I don’t think anyone’s out here trying to get recruiting views. I think they’re trying to have some fun in Hawaii.”
The Salt Lake City (Utah) Olympus product isn’t the only Latu playing in the all-star game. Cameron’s brother Nathan, a BYU linebacker commit, is also among the group.
“It’s going to be my last game with my brother before everyone starts splitting ways,” Cameron said. “It’ll be nice to play with him one last time.”
Latu, who signed with the Tide on Dec. 20 over several other big-time offer including USC and Utah, talked about his reaction to Alabama’s last-second win over Georgia in the College Football Playoff Championship.
“My whole heart was just racing the whole game,” he said. “My emotions were up and down the whole game. I was pissed at one point, I was super happy, it was just going crazy. Right when we won, oh man, my heart just settled down and I was like, ‘Alright, we just won, finally. Hope we get another one next year.’”
Latu has been able to form a bond with UA freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during his visits, and considering both are coming to Tuscaloosa from the opposite side of the country. ?
“I think it’s pretty sweet knowing Tua,” Latu said. “He’s just so humble about his actions and what he’s done. I’m inspired to be just like him on that stage. I’m going to bust my booty to get some playing time. I want to be the best I can be.”
Latu isn’t the only target of the Tide’s from Utah. Nick Saban and staff are hoping to land four-star offensive lineman Penei Sewell from St. George. While Latu isn’t going to pester others about their recruitments, he did offer up a recruiting pitch for kids from his region of the country.
“I’d say just give them a chance,” Latu said. “They’re winning for a reason. Check them out. It’s only four years of your life that your leaving your family. If distance is a problem, go grind for them and you’ll be back in four years. Just do you for a little bit and you’ll be back in a minute.”
At 6-foot-5, 236 pounds, Latu is rated the No. 8 weak-side defensive end and the No. 125 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He’ll be in Tuscaloosa this upcoming summer to enroll.
