Top247 overview: How the 2018 DBs stack up
quote:
Following the winter all-star circuit, 247Sports has released its final Top247 recruiting rankings for the class of 2018. Below, we break down how the cornerback and safety positions finished in the Top247 — who rose, who fell, and who dropped out.
The 5-stars
Three cornerbacks and two safeties made the final five-star cut in the Top247, led by the trio of corners in Patrick Surtain Jr. (11), Tyson Campbell (12), and Jalen Green (17). Surtain is still undecided in his recruitment as LSU and Alabama appear to be the top contenders down the stretch. The 247Sports Crystal Ball sits strongly in favor of LSU.
Campbell, who moved up 12 spots from his previous ranking, is also uncommitted. Like Surtain, Campbell is expected to officially visit Alabama this weekend, while Georgia and Miami lead his Crystal Ball forecasts with 48 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
Green, who moved up 15 spots from his previous ranking, has already signed with Texas, which is also where both new five-star safeties — DeMarvion Overshown (28) and Caden Sterns (32) — signed in December. Sterns rose 10 spots from his prior ranking.
Those three players lead the way for the Longhorns' outstanding defensive backs class, which features six prospects ranked 120th nationally or higher in the final Top247 rankings.

Breaking down new Top247 5-star Tyson Campbell
quote:
Tyson Campbell is one of 15 new five-star players in the final Top247 for the class of 2018.
The Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage cornerback — who remains uncommitted — moves up from 24th to No. 12 in the final rankings after an impressive showing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
"The raw physical tools are undeniable for Tyson Campbell," said Barton Simmons, the Director of Scouting for 247Sports. "He's as impressive of a prospect from a height and athleticism combination as I think you could ask for at the cornerback position.
"At the Army Bowl, he really stepped up to the challenge and competed to the level you want to see from a No. 1 cornerback. I think he made a really good case that he could be the No. 1 cornerback in this class."
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Campbell is one of three five-star cornerbacks in the class of 2018 along with his high school teammate Patrick Surtain (No. 11 overall) and Texas signee Jalen Green (No. 17). The internal debate between the two American Heritage Patriots for top cornerback in the class stretched the extent of the evaluation process.
"It's really splitting hairs at the top," Simmons said. "There was a lot of discussion."
Campbell took his first official visit to Georgia last weekend and the Bulldogs have surged by Miami on the 247Sports Crystal Ball ever since. He and Surtain are expected to take an official visit to Alabama this weekend.

New 247Sports 5-star: Quay Walker
quote:
Quay Walker is one of 15 new five-star players in the final Top247 for the class of 2018.
The Cordele (Ga.) Crisp County outside linebacker — who is verbally committed to Alabama at this time – moves up from 57th to No. 31 in the final rankings after an impressive showing throughout Under Armour All-America week.
"The biggest thing is just how athletic he is and how versatile he is," said Luke Stampini, 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst. "He can play any one of the linebacker positions. It's a deep year at linebacker and I would say Quay is one of, if not the most athletic of the whole group, and that's saying something because there's a lot of athletic guys out there.
"I think what we saw during practices at Under Armour All-America week and what his senior film showed was that he is a really big guy that can make a lot of plays. He can rush the passer, he can drop into coverage — all that combined was enough to bump him up."
The 6-foot-4, 236-pound Walker is one of four five-star outside linebackers in the class of 2018 and stands as the only unsigned five-star at the position.
Walker committed to Alabama on June 8 but continues to consider additional programs. He took an official visit to Tennessee last weekend. He is expected at Georgia this coming weekend and continues to consider visits to Alabama, Auburn and Florida down the stretch.

Top247 overview: How the 2018 QBs stack up

Following the winter all-star circuit, 247Sports has released its final Top247 recruiting rankings for the class of 2018. Below, we’re breaking down how the quarterbacks finished in the Top247 — who rose, who fell, even who dropped out.
The 5-stars
Trevor Lawrence (1), Justin Fields (2) and JT Daniels (6) give us three elite five-star quarterbacks in the 2018 class. Lawrence and Fields — each from Georgia — have a 101 rating, which is deemed ‘franchise-level’ by 247Sports. Daniels, who reclassified from the 2019 class to 2018 so that he could enroll a year early at USC and compete for Sam Darnold’s vacated job, has a rating of 99. He and Lawrence, a Clemson signee, were Army All-Americans. Fields will push Jake Fromm this spring at Georgia.

West Spotlight: Predictions for five top unsigned prospects
quote:
Here are the five biggest recruitments remaining in the West Region and Adam Gorney's prediction on where those prospects will sign heading into the National Signing Day on Feb. 7.
Posted on 1/18/18 at 2:31 pm to TideSaint
quote:
Isaac Taylor-Stuart
Taylor-Stuart has an SEC flavor to his recruitment, especially as things get closer to National Signing Day. The five-star cornerback took an official visit to USC this past weekend and things went really well, so the Trojans are a serious contender that absolutely could land the San Diego Helix star. There seems to be significant interest in Georgia, though, and the Bulldogs playing for the national title cannot hurt. For the weekend of Jan. 26, Taylor-Stuart has locked in a visit to Alabama. Tennessee is also being considered for a trip. Texas A&M is also a major player in these final weeks. Taylor-Stuart said at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that as he matures and goes through the process, he’s leaning toward the SEC, but USC is in his backyard and is not giving up.
Prediction: USC
Posted on 1/18/18 at 2:32 pm to TideSaint
quote:
Olaijah Griffin
According to sources, Griffin is very serious about a lot of the SEC and ACC powerhouses that have offered in recent weeks, but others might be pushing him to stay closer to home and that means USC could win out for one of the nation’s best players. Griffin is coming off a fantastic visit to USC this past weekend and could have a busy month ahead with expected trips to Florida, Auburn and possibly others. There remains a very strong possibility that Griffin, who shined at the recent Under Armour game, can end up in the SEC because he could be leaning that way, but the Trojans have some serious pull as well.
Prediction: USC
Posted on 1/18/18 at 2:32 pm to TideSaint
quote:
Penei Sewell
One of the craziest recruitments in the West, Sewell is still a guessing game with no coaching staff fully confident it is going to land the massive offensive lineman. Utah, Alabama, Oregon and USC remain the top four and Sewell said at the Polynesian Bowl that he could make a pledge at any time leading up to Signing Day. There’s a rumor Sewell was serious about Nevada - where his brothers play - leading up to an expected late December decision, but then he chose to wait longer to make his pick. Utah makes a lot of sense for the four-star, but Alabama has definitely been pushing and Oregon has always intrigued him as well.
Prediction: Utah

Huntsville recruiting roundup: Lee's Malik Langham earns 4th star
quote:
Malik Langham is enjoying another big week.
The Lee-Huntsville 2018 defensive end received a fourth star from 247Sports and moved into the recruiting site's national rankings as the No. 222 overall recruit.
The honor came just before the 6-foot-5 1/2, 269-pounder makes his official visit to Alabama this weekend. Langham visited Vanderbilt last weekend, and he received in-home visits this week from Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt and defensive end coach Tracy Rocker, and Florida head coach Dan Mullen with members of the Gators staff.
Langham is No. 11 on AL.com's A-List of the state's top senior prospects. He is rated the No. 9 strong-side defensive end in the nation by 247Sports.

Will another Barker play QB for Alabama? Spain Park senior discusses his college decision
quote:
Braxton Barker has a decision to make.
Will the Spain Park quarterback accept Alabama's offer to walk on and follow in the footsteps of his father, national championship winning quarterback Jay Barker? Or, will he accept a scholarship offer from a smaller school to continue his football career?
The truth is, he doesn't know yet.
"Everything is open," Barker said this week.
Barker currently holds offers from Delta State (Miss.) and Kentucky Wesleyan, both NCAA Division II schools. Alabama and Memphis have extended preferred walk-on offers, which essentially guarantees a roster spot without a scholarship, but the Memphis situation could morph into a scholarship offer.
He said Georgia has also contacted him about a possible preferred walk-on spot, but that's only a possibility at this point.
Barker said he has a visit to Delta State set up for this weekend and a visit to Alabama scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 27. He has left the final weekend before National Signing Day open in case another school makes an 11th-hour push.
"I'm going to go on my visits and see what they schools have to offer," Barker said. "Even if I stop playing football, I want to find a place I could see myself in and a place I can get a good education."
The 6-foot, 180-pound Barker completed 172-of-287 passes for 2,228 yards, with 19 touchdown passes and eight interceptions, in 2017 as the Jaguars finished 6-5 and lost to Hewitt-Trussville in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.
Jay Barker, who played his high school football for Hewitt-Trussville, completed 56.9 percent of his passes from 1991-94 at Alabama, throwing 26 touchdown passes. As a senior, he won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award and finished in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting.
Jay Barker added height and weight after signing with Alabama, and Braxton Barker said he's likely still growing. He added about three inches of height from his junior to senior year in high school.
Alabama doesn't have a committed quarterback in the Class of 2018, although Braxton Barker could fill the need without the Crimson Tide using a scholarship. Alabama recently offered Arizona quarterback Brock Purdy and has also pursued Sidney Lanier quarterback James Foster.
"I still do want to play football," Barker said. "One of the things I'm going to focus on his how will I fit in and (if) I'll have a chance to compete and have a chance to play."
Could that be at Alabama? Or some other school?
National Signing Day is Feb. 7, so Barker presumably faces a deadline to make a final decision.

IF Mac Jones is progressing well, and we fill up on top targets at other positions, then I'm somewhat inclined to agree. I'm also assuming we'd try to take both Taulia & Tyson for 2019.

I doubt both of those guys would want to go to the same school. Either could pretty much select which school they will attend.
