NEW ORLEANS — Cam Akers de-committed from Alabama last month, but the Crimson Tide’s recruitment of the elite running back hasn’t stopped.

In fact, it may be better than it was when he called himself an Alabama commit.

“They continuously contact me, daily,” Akers told SEC Country at Nike’s “The Opening” regional in New Orleans on Sunday. “It’s not just me they are recruiting, either. They are always hitting up my mom to tell her to tell me to call them.”

Alabama isn’t the only school after the four-star prospect from Clinton, Miss., and there’s a good reason for that.

The 5-foot-11, 212-pounder absolutely obliterated the competition on Sunday en route to being named the camp’s overall MVP. His numbers mirrored those of an NFL prospect. He posted a 4.44 40-yard dash time, which would have been the third-fastest mark at this year’s NFL Combine. His 40.6-inch vertical jump would have placed him second.

It’s no wonder why Akers wouldn’t be worried about facing other competition at the school he chooses, even if Najee Harris, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, is committed to Alabama.

Though, Akers did say he would like to choose a school where it’s easier to get a starting role from the first time he steps on to the practice field.

“I want to see a great situation at the schools at running back,” Akers said. “I would like to possibly play as a freshman.”

Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State were the schools Akers named when asked if any of the programs he is considering offered good opportunities to start immediately. He did not name Alabama.

Is that something Crimson Tide fans should worry about?

“No, not at all,” Akers said. “I don’t want to go to a school and be a workhorse, either. It’s good to have another running back there with you.”

Akers said the reason why he de-committed from Alabama was to reevaluate his recruitment to make sure he made the right decision. He made it clear that just because he backed off his pledge to the Crimson Tide, it doesn’t mean they’re out of the race.

“If they continue to recruit me hard and I feel like it’s the right decision for me then Alabama it is for me,” Akers said.

Akers is rated as the nation’s No. 3 running back and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Mississippi.

According to BOL, we could be on the verge of another Linebacker commitment in Christopher Allen, maybe as soon as this weekend. He's hoping to visit for A-Day.

Following his visit to Alabama last week, a source that has talked with the family believes the Crimson Tide are now the team to beat. I hope to have more soon.
Andrew Bone tweeted that he is still on campus. I thought he left to visit Ole Miss.

If Bone is right, he's been at Alabama since Friday, 5 days.

I asked Bone about this and he said that he did leave Alabama to visit Ole Miss for a day or two, but he returned to Alabama to stay a few more days.
