Since 1999, when the likes of Brock Berlin, Casey Clausen and Matt Cassel dominated the recruiting circuit, the Elite 11 quarterback competition has showcased the nation's top high school passing talent every single summer.

Next week, a dozen of the best passers in the class of 2017 will descend on Nike's headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, for this year's Elite 11 competition at The Opening recruiting combine. Hunter Johnson, Dylan McCaffrey and Tate Martell will be among those joining a truly legendary group of modern quarterbacks who are Elite 11 alumni.

But which former Elite 11 quarterbacks are the best of the best in the competition's history? Several have gone on to win Heisman Trophies, become No. 1 overall picks in the NFL draft and rack up countless records in both the college and pro levels.

Here are the picks for the 11 best Elite 11 alumni of all time. These selections are based on a player's overall football career to date, combining accolades in both college football and the NFL into a total reflection of his success since being selected to the Elite 11.

10. Tyrod Tayler

9. AJ McCarron

AJ McCarron might not have gotten all the attention he deserved as the starting quarterback at Alabama from 2011 to 2013. After taking a redshirt in 2009 and playing sparingly in 2010, the former 4-star quarterback got right to work as one of the game's most consistent arms in recent years.

In 2011, McCarron had his quietest season—2,634 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions as Alabama went to the national title game and got revenge on LSU. The next season, he led the Tide to a repeat as he threw for 2,933 yards, 30 touchdowns and just three interceptions. His passer rating of 175.28 in 2012 was tops in the country over the likes of Elite 11 alumni Aaron Murray, Tajh Boyd, Geno Smith and Teddy Bridgewater.

McCarron then challenged for the Heisman Trophy in 2013 with a runner-up finish behind fellow Alabama native Jameis Winston. He finished his Alabama career with 77 touchdown passes and just 15 interceptions, completing more than two-thirds of his passes for 9,019 yards. McCarron rewrote the Alabama record book and was the only quarterback in the BCS era to start for back-to-back national champions.

After not appearing in a game as a rookie following his fifth-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals, McCarron won the No. 2 job behind Andy Dalton and came in as the former TCU star's replacement late in the 2015 season. He went 2-2 as an emergency starter for Cincinnati with five touchdowns and one interception.

The premier showcase on the college football recruiting summer camp circuit is set to get underway next week when the The Opening kicks off at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

The event will feature more than 160 of the nation’s top recruits in the country. A majority of them are in the 2017 cycle, but a handful of elite underclassmen will also compete against one another.

Additionally, the dozen Elite 11 finalists tabbed earlier this month will all be on hand.

Overall, 75 of the nation’s top 100 overall prospects in the 247Sports composite rankings will be in attendance.

So which players should fans be paying close attention to next week during the competition?

25. 2019 LB Owen Pappoe

High School: Grayson HS; Loganville, Georgia

Size: 6’0”, 200 lbs

Recruitment Status: Considering Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia

Even though he’s set to enter his sophomore year in high school, linebacker Owen Pappoe has already made a name for himself in recruiting circles.

As Bleacher Report’s Tyler Donohue detailed, Pappoe became the first rising sophomore to punch his ticket to The Opening. When he arrives in Oregon, he will be one of six underclassmen in a field including 166 of the nation’s premier prep prospects.

As his testing numbers at the Atlanta Opening regional indicate, Pappoe is an athletic freak who will fit in well with the field from an athletic standpoint.

While linebackers are at a disadvantage in seven-on-seven play theoretically, Pappoe is the type of explosive athlete who can stick with speedy skill players in this setting.

20. 4-star QB Tua Tagovailoa

High School: St. Louis HS; Honolulu

Size: 6’1”, 215 lbs

Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama

Perhaps the biggest revelation at the Elite 11 Finals earlier this month was the performance put together by 4-star Alabama pledge Tua Tagovailoa.

The nation’s No. 2 dual-threat quarterback wowed the Elite 11 staff and established himself as one of the nation’s elite passers in the 2017 cycle in the process.

He heads into The Opening with a wave of momentum he’s built up after working hard in the offseason to improve as a passer.

If he can replicate his strong showing at the Oakland regional and at the Elite 11 Finals, Tagovailoa has a chance to become the second Tide quarterback commit to claim Elite 11 MVP honors in the last three years.

6. 5-star OT Alex Leatherwood

High School: Washington HS; Pensacola, Florida

Size: 6’6”, 315 lbs

Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama

With seven of the nation’s top 10 offensive tackle prospects on hand at The Opening, the event will help provide clarity in the rankings of one of the most important positions on the field.

One player among that group is 5-star Alabama commit Alex Leatherwood.

The Sunshine State star was one of the standouts at the New Orleans regional and made it clear he was one of the nation’s elite talents, as detailed by Barton Simmons of 247Sports.

Leatherwood is a physically imposing tackle with nimble feet, which is a combination that will make him one of the more formidable offensive linemen who are gunning for a spot in the Final Five Lineman Challenge.

3. 5-star LB Dylan Moses

High School: IMG Academy; Bradenton, Florida

Size: 6’2”, 220 lbs

Recruitment Status: Considering Alabama, LSU, Miami, Ohio State and Texas

If there’s one person who can relate to what Pappoe is going through as an underclassman and budding recruiting sensation, it’s 5-star linebacker Dylan Moses.

The Louisiana native has been a household name in recruiting circles since he was a freshman.

His return trip to The Opening is likely to be a proving ground for Moses, who lost his grip on the top overall spot in the 2017 cycle.

As Sayles detailed, Moses earned his second invite to the event with a dominant performance at the Houston regional.

With the nation’s best prospects on hand, Moses will have a chance to snatch back the crown of being billed as 2017’s top overall prospect.

2. 5-Star RB Najee Harris

High School: Antioch HS; Antioch, California

Size: 6’3”, 226 lbs

Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama

Alabama head coach Nick Saban knows a thing or two about recruiting and developing freakish talents at the running back position.

While rushers enjoyed a bit of a renaissance in college football last year, the Crimson Tide offense has been an assembly line for NFL-caliber backs during Saban’s tenure.

So it’s no surprise to see Alabama pledge and 5-star running back Najee Harris emerge as the nation’s top overall prospect in the 2017 cycle heading into The Opening.

He stood out on the big stage as a junior. During the Oakland regional camp, former NFL quarterback and Elite 11 head coach Trent Dilfer lauded him for his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

Given his NFL-type measurables and the fact that he’s rushed for more than 5,000 yards over the last two seasons, Harris has already validated the immense hype he will carry into this event and into his final year on the prep level.

1. 5-Star DT Marvin Wilson

High School: Episcopal HS; Bellaire, Texas

Size: 6’4”, 329 lbs

Recruitment Status: Considering Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas

One of the biggest storylines of last year’s competition was the emphatic statement made by eventual Michigan signee Rashan Gary.

If there’s one defensive tackle in this year’s field capable of providing a similar performance to Gary’s, it would be 5-star Texas native Marvin Wilson.

Over the course of his freshman and sophomore seasons, Wilson tallied 103 tackles, including 34 tackles for loss and 19 sacks.

Tipping the scales at nearly 330 pounds, Wilson has the power and athleticism to be nearly unblockable in a one-on-one setting.

If he can approach the level Gary performed at last year, Wilson could exit Beaverton with eyes on claiming the top overall spot in the 2017 cycle.

Brooklyn (NY) Poly Prep five-star offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson is one of Michigan's top targets in the 2017 recruiting cycle, and it's not hard to envision why. The 6'6.5", 354 lb. lineman is a force of nature, and has basically every school in the country clamoring for his signature.

As recently as December, Wilson had named Michigan as his outright leader, but has since backed off that stance. He spoke with 247Sports' Kipp Adams as part of he and Keith Niebuhr's "SEC Recruiting Buzz" podcast, and broke down where he currently stands as far as his recruitment.

"Right now, my top five is USC, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and LSU," Wilson said. "It was really tough [trimming my list]. Towards my junior year, I really started going over the whole offer thing. By the end of my sophomore year, I had 30 [offers]. My junior year is finished, and I had 65 going into senior year. So weeding all that stuff down it was tough, but I went off my relationship with the coaches and where I could see myself playing for the next four years."

The fifth edition of the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented By Under Armour is in the books and, with such an important anniversary of an amazing event, we thought it would be cool to look back at the top five prospects that attended at each position. Today we look at the linebackers.

Note: The order is based on a combination of success at the event, success at the high school level and, in many cases, success in college.

1. Jaylon Smith
2. Raekwon McMillan

3. Reuben Foster

The Skinny: Foster's recruiting process was one of the more chaotic ones in recent years. After making a commitment to Alabama prior to his junior season, Foster made several visits to Georgia and Auburn and eventually flipped to the Tigers. However, the coaching change at Auburn caused him to re-open his process and take official visits to Auburn, Alabama, Washington, Georgia and San Diego State. Again it came down to Auburn and Alabama and finally he committed to the Crimson Tide two days before National Signing Day.

Farrell’s Take: Foster showed us how special he could be at the Five-Star Challenge, especially on the first day of drills. He was a massive linebacker but had light feet and could cover very well against speedy backs and tight ends. His true strength, of course, was his ability to get downhill and thump but he showcased his versatility at our first event at Atlanta.

4. Cameron Smith

5. Ben Davis

The Skinny: While Davis also took official visits to Notre Dame and LSU, this one always looked destined to come down to either Alabama or Auburn. Growing up minutes from Tuscaloosa and with his father having played for the Crimson Tide, most assumed that Alabama was the clear choice. And while he did commit to the Crimson Tide on National Signing Day, Auburn made a significant push after its official visit and gave Davis plenty to think about while Georgia was also very much in the picture.

Farrell’s Take: It’s odd that Jaylon Smith is the only pure outside linebacker on this list as the others are inside guys who did a great job of making passing lanes tighter and making the field smaller for quarterbacks. Davis has more length than anyone but Smith on this list and Davis made the most of it. I could foresee him moving up here over the next few years.

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -- Scout released its initial class of 2018 rankings this week and Central-Phenix City wide receiver Justyn Ross was the highest ranked in Alabama, coming in at No. 72 overall.

Analysis

SOPHOMORE EVAL: Ross is a physical specimen on the outside, still adjusting to football as basketball was his first love as a long and lean talent. His immense size and physicality make him a mismatch anywhere on the football field when coupled with his well above-average speed. While Ross has the tools to be the top prospect in Alabama, route-running polish is lacking at this time.

Even coming off of a torn ACL and being unable to play basketball or hit the camp and combine circuit deep into his junior year, it's easy to see the high ceiling with Phenix City (Ala.) Central wide receiver Justyn Ross.

The class of 2018 prospect is a specimen at near 6-foot-5, 200 pounds and has programs from the SEC like Alabama, Auburn and Florida vying for his services as well as those around the country like USC, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State and others doing the same.

Ross opens the class of 2018 rankings on Scout as the top prospect in Alabama and the No. 72 overall prospect in America.

"Justyn is the type of guy that even if they put two on him, he still makes plays," Central coach Jamey DuBose said. "He's a guy that's got sprinter speed and he's very physical, that's probably the most surprising to me. He is one of the best blocking receivers I've had in the game."

DuBose breaks down his game further with Scout (above).

Scout releases their Scout 300 for the 2018 class today, but if Ross is the highest ranked kid in the state at #72 overall, it looks like the in-state crop for next year is gonna be pretty bad.
