Steve Wiltfong on Baker:

quote:
Alabama committed as good an offensive tackle as one will find in the 2017 class on Monday evening in Elliot Baker.
Taking it up a notch, the Crimson Tide may not sign a better prospect in the country than the 6-foot-7 295-pound Baker, when talking JUCO, prep school or recruits coming out of high school.
Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 player in America by 247Sports regardless of position, his verbal gives Alabama the No. 1 JUCO prospect and the No. 1 high school prospect as the City College of San Francisco recruit joins five-star running back Najee Harris. Speaking of Harris, former NFL cornerback Ray Mickens told 247Sports on Monday at the Sound Mind Sound Body Football Academy in Houston that Harris wowed him at the Oakland Nike Football The Opening Regional where he worked with the defensive backs. Mickens was in disbelief regarding the skill set Harris already has and Mickens has obviously come across a good player or two in his day.
Back to Baker, commit No. 10 for Alabama, this verbal saw the Crimson Tide jump to No. 3 in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings as Nick Saban and his staff aim to finish No. 1 for a seventh-straight year.
When turning on Baker’s film the first thing one notices is this player runs like a tight end. A prototypical left tackle with a tremendous frame, long arms, strength, great balance, plays with good leverage, Baker can absolutely run, making him a force as a run blocker. He can shoot to the second level, he can pull and with his explosiveness and good feet he just drives defensive linemen down field.
Baker will look to help City College of San Francisco win a second-straight National Championship this fall before enrolling early in Tuscaloosa where he will have three years to play two.
The Crimson Tide are on track to sign perhaps the nation’s best offensive line class. With Baker and five-star Alex Leatherwood in the boat, Alabama is also the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle per 247Sports in Wyatt Davis, they’re battling Auburn for the No. 1 player in the state in Top247 offensive tackle Austin Troxell and blue-chippers like Jedrick Wills, Walker Little and Kendall Randolph are also on the board.

Holy frick. We have got to sign him. I don't care if he is a 2 star.

What caused Baker to go the Juco route?

Just noticed something you posted yesterday (I believe). You think Rod Jones (the JC DE/LB that's visiting us) is stiff? We must not be watching the same film. He's much better than Coatney, and better than King, IMO. Drew Dearmond said he thought he looked like a cross between Upshaw and Ryan Anderson, and I agree. Equally good versus the run and pass, IMO.
Apparently teams projected him as not graduating until 2017 (this was reported today) and didn't pursue until this week. He has to finish one English class in two weeks and he'll be finished in Juco. Not to mention he's an NFL legacy. His dad played in the league for several years for the Chiefs.

Yeah he's stiff. He doesn't have natural waist bend or fluidity. He's productive despite it though.
I just like the Stewart kid more.

Technically, you could say the same about Ryan Anderson. He has powerful hands and sheds blocks. I hope we take both of them.

By both of them, I mean Jones and Stewart, I should clarify.

Kinglaw on BOL(Reuben Foster uncle) is staying saying Benton is Bama Bound.
Posted on 6/7/16 at 2:59 pm to Rizzy
I watched Benton and Ignont's highlights back to back this morning and Benton is the better player. I'd still like to take both of them, if possible, but I don't think we have room.

How many LB's do you think we take? 5?

Johnson
Cowan
Allen
Benton
Moses
Rice
These are the 6 I want.

I'm really big on Rice. He's a stud. Can't figure out why he isn't ranked higher. Probably the most underrated LB in the entire 2017 class.

I don't really care for either one of them, to tell you the truth. I'll get behind Benton if he comes to us. But he just doesn't make enough plays for my liking. Looks like Brent Calloway 2.0 to me.
Sorry to be so disagreeable today.

BOL just basically confirmed that Benton will be committing to Alabama on Friday.

Premier quarterbacks can provide pivotal building blocks for college football recruiting classes, solidifying future offensive efforts and giving coaches a potential leader who can rally other athletes to join them on campus. Just like at the professional and collegiate level, top-tier high school passers command a spotlight that challenges their ability to handle physical and mental scrutiny.
We've grown familiar with the prized playmakers at the position in an impressive 2017 cycle, evaluating prospects through multi-season film review and in-person camp assessment. Bleacher Report was in attendance for the Elite 11 national finals June 3-5 at Redondo Union High School in Los Angeles County, California, checking the pulse of this group.
Here's a look at how America's most impressive prep quarterbacks stack up months shy of their senior high school seasons, placing emphasis on accuracy, arm strength, athleticism, leadership and improvisational skills.

Ugh. Lots of work ethic concerns. Hopefully if he signs with us, he'll mature a lot.
You never really know how to assess work ethic concerns with a top athletic prospect. Sometimes the info could turn out to be incorrect or biased from the local coaches. Sometimes they just mature when getting to college. I suppose it's wise to truth Saban and Pruitt, as they hit on more than they miss.

2. Tua Tagovailoa
High School: St. Louis (Honolulu)
Size: 6'1", 215 lbs
Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama
Bleacher Report Analysis
Tua Tagovailoa answered any questions about his ability to adapt and thrive in various offensive settings at the Elite 11 finals. Challenged by Super Bowl champion quarterback Trent Dilfer and his staff to sharpen the approach in a pro-style setting, this Crimson Tide commit rose to the occasion and largely exceeded expectations.
Tagovailoa registered the highest score (45) among two dozen contenders in Saturday evening's pro-day testing, and then he took things to another level Sunday. He was sensational in seven-on-seven action, completing 14 of 15 pass attempts with seven tosses resulting in touchdowns.
His only incompletion was the result of a receiver's drop in the end zone. If Elite 11 finals had concluded with an MVP award, it would have gone to Tagovailoa.
This dominant performance augments what we've seen from him in a spread offense at St. Louis, where Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota once starred. Tagovailoa, who also seemed to be a gravitating force for fellow Elite 11 finalists, posted 2,583 passing yards, 576 rushing yards, 33 touchdown tosses and just three interceptions last season, per MaxPreps.
Jake Fromm was ranked #7.

On Benton:
So basically the same situation as Malcolm Askew, yet Benton didn't whine about it. That's a good thing if you ask me.
quote:
The Phenix City (Ala.) Central prospect was long considered an Auburn lean due to his proximity to campus and his frequent visits, however, it’s been Alabama that has made a push to land the four-star linebacker since the return of defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley. Benton told BOL earlier this spring that he had been hearing a lot more from UA than he did when former defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was on the staff.

According to Keith Niebuhr:
quote:
BOL has an update with sources saying Alabama is in good position to land the 4-star LB from Phenix City, Ala.
But ...
From what we can tell, it sounds like Benton has given both schools some indications he is coming (this actually happens more than you would believe). He visited Auburn on Saturday; the Tide on Sunday.
