Running Back:
Najee Harris*, Antioch High School, Antioch, Calif.
Brian Robinson*, Hillcrest High School, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Travis Etienne, Jennings High School, Jennings, La.
Running back is one of Alabama’s top priorities in the Class of 2017, and I expect Alabama to sign three tailbacks.
Najee Harris is the big name on this list. He’s the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit. With that distinction, many of the nation’s top college football programs want you to be in their uniform, even if you are currently committed.
Harris has been committed to Alabama for more than a year now but has continued to take visits elsewhere, most notably to Southern California, UCLA and Ohio State.
It’s going to be a battle to sign Harris come National Signing Day, but it’s a race Alabama is willing to run. Harris is the highest-rated RB recruit since LSU’s Leonard Fournette. In the end, I think he sticks with Alabama, but I am definitely not confident right now.
Brian Robinson, a four-star prospect, has been committed to Alabama for several months now and I don’t see him in another jersey than the Tide’s. He grew up an Alabama fan and has dreamed about playing for the Tide. Georgia is still recruiting Robinson hard, and he took a visit to Athens recently, but it’s not a concern. Commits visiting other schools has become standard in recruiting nowadays.
Travis Etienne is a running back recruit that has blown up in the last month. The three-star prospect visited Tuscaloosa for A-Day and picked up an offer that day. Shortly after getting that offer, he named the Crimson Tide his leader. Alabama is in a good position to land Etienne when it comes time for a decision. The in-state school, LSU, hasn’t offered yet, and if it does, things could get interesting.

Wide Receiver:
Devonta Smith, Amite High School, Amite, La.
Jerry Jeudy, Deerfield Beach High School, Pompano Beach, Fla.
Henry Ruggs, Robert E. Lee High School, Montgomery, Ala.
Jeff Thomas, East Saint Louis High School, East Saint Louis, Ill.
After signing only two wide receivers in 2016, wide receiver is one of Alabama’s top priorities.
This class will be led by four-star Devonta Smith. Smith is likely going to be a five-star at some point because he’s been nearly unstoppable in every event he’s participated in this spring.
Out of the unsigned prospects, I think Smith to Alabama is the one I am most confident in. The former Georgia commit has a great relationship with Tide defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, grew up with guidance from Sam Petitto, Alabama’s assistant director of player personnel and is close friends with 2016 signee Shyheim Carter. That trio’s influence will be key on Smith’s decision. His personality also fits with Alabama’s style. He’s all business when it comes to his recruitment.
Jerry Jeudy, a four-star, is close friends with Calvin Ridley. Seeing Ridley blow up as a freshman has to be encouraging for Jeudy. He named Alabama as his leader at one point in his recruitment but has backed off of that. That doesn’t matter. Alabama is still the favorite to land him.
Henry Ruggs is another near certainty for Alabama. The four-star has visited Alabama countless times, and he loves the Crimson Tide.
Jeff Thomas is almost completely silent in the recruiting world. I have not seen quotes from him in months. But, when he did speak, he did have Alabama as his leader. The staff is high on him and would love to add him as a slot receiver.
Most notably absent on this list is Nico Collins, the top receiver in Alabama. His recruitment is going to go on until National Signing Day, and we may not know where exactly he’ll go until that day. Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Clemson are in the race. He just visited Ann Arbor and loved his trip there. But in the end, I think Georgia signs Collins. He’s arguably the Bulldogs’ top target and he loved what he saw from freshman quarterback Jacob Eason during the spring game. He also likes Jake Fromm, a former Alabama commit, a lot. I think we see Collins in the red-and-black.
I'd take those four in a heartbeat, but man we need some size on the outside.

Tight End:
Zech Byrd, Stanhope Elmore High School, Millbrook, Ala.
Byrd is a three-star prospect, but he would be a take for Alabama right now. He’s 6-foot-6 and weighs 235 pounds. He’s the big body type of tight end that the Crimson Tide loves. Byrd, like many of the other top prospects in the state, loves Alabama.

Offensive Line:
Alex Leatherwood*, Booker T. Washington High School, Pensacola, Fla.
Austin Troxell, Madison Academy, Madison, Ala.
Wyatt Davis, St. John Bosco High School, Bellflower, Calif.
Kendall Randolph, Bob Jones High School, Madison, Ala.
This group is led by Alex Leatherwood, another longtime Alabama commit. I had one SEC assistant tell me that Leatherwood is a “future NFL player.” He’s a prototypical left tackle and one the Crimson Tide staff hopes sticks with his commitment. He has taken several visits to other schools, most notably Florida, but the offensive tackle maintains he’s 100 percent committed. We’ll see if that’s true in the coming months.
Austin Troxell could announce a commitment at any time. Even though he has a top four of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss, it’s really down to the in-state schools. The offensive tackle grew up an Alabama fan and the staff has been pushing him to get on board. I think the Tide beat out the Tigers for him.
Wyatt Davis is a five-star offensive guard from California. He listed Alabama as his leader at one point and I think the Tide are still the favorite here. It would be another huge West coast win for Kiffin if he could help pull Davis away from the California schools.
Kendall Randolph, a four-star offensive guard, is the brother of former Alabama basketball player Levi Randolph. Like Troxell, this will come down to the in-state schools and the Tide will win out.

Defensive Line:
LaBryan Ray, James Clemens High School, Madison, Ala.
Isaiah Buggs, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Ruston, La.
Aubrey Solomon, Lee County High School, Leesburg, Ga.
Ryan Johnson, St. Paul’s Episcopal High School, Mobile, Ala.
Akial Byers, Fayetteville High School, Fayetteville, Ark.
Alabama has made defensive end LaBryan Ray, a four-star, a major priority after offering him months ago. He’s extremely high on Alabama, too. I don’t see another school getting his commitment.
Buggs is Alabama’s top remaining junior college prospect. Again, the interest level from both parties is very high.
Solomon is arguably the team’s top defensive tackle target. The South Georgia product lists Alabama as his leader and it’s his mother’s current favorite school, too. His mother is in the military and the discipline of the team really impressed her when the two recently visited campus. Solomon has made it clear that his mother needs to approve of his college choice.
Note: Aaron Sterling is committed to Alabama at this time, but I think he’ll end up flipping at some point.
Like Troxell and Randolph, I see Johnson’s recruitment coming down to Auburn and Alabama. Johnson grew up an Auburn fan but Alabama has really put the full-court press on him. He visited both schools back-to-back days recently and admitted that the Alabama one was better.
Byers is the sleeper pick for me right now. We don’t hear much from him, but he’s high on Alabama and an assistant recently paid him a visit in Arkansas. The Razorbacks have not offered him yet, despite him living in Fayetteville. He’s my pick for the team’s second defensive tackle.

Linebacker:
VanDarius Cowan*, Palm Beach Gardens High School, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Gary Johnson*, Dodge City Community College, Douglasville, Ga.
Will Ignont, Buckhorn High School, New Market, Ala.
Christopher Allen, Southern University Lab High School, Baton Rouge, La.
Cowan de-committed from Florida State twice before committing to Alabama. I want to believe that his recruitment is finally over. He has said that he will not be visiting other schools, so that’s good news for Alabama. He certainly has been one of the team’s most vocal recruits on Twitter.
Johnson randomly committed to Alabama two months ago. He hasn’t visited the campus in more than a year, but his commitment is strong. I don’t see him de-committing despite top schools vying to flip him.
Ignont told SEC Country shortly after visiting Alabama for A-Day that he had made a silent commitment to a school. You can read the tea leaves here.
Allen lists Alabama as his leader and has done so for several months now. Even though he’s from Baton Rouge, the four-star prospect has been enamored with Alabama’s program for some time now.

Cornerback:
Shaun Wade, Trinity Christian Academy, Jacksonville, Fla.
Cornerback is not a top priority for Alabama this year after signing four of them in 2016, which is why I have the team signing only one this year, but it’s a big one.
As I’ve said for several months now, I think Alabama eventually flips Ohio State five-star commit Shaun Wade at some point during his process. Even though he lives in Jacksonville now, he claims Montgomery as his actual hometown. Most of his family still lives in the area and that’s very important to Wade.

Safety:
Xavier McKinney*, Roswell High School, Roswell, Ga.
Maliek Gray, LaVergne High School, LaVergne, Tenn.
McKinney, a four-star, has definitely flirted with Georgia for a while now, especially after Kirby Smart was hired. I don’t think the Bulldogs are a threat, though. I believe him when he says he’s 100 percent committed to Alabama. I don’t see him flipping.
Gray wouldn’t have been on this list if I wrote this last month but he’s definitely emerging as a big-time target for the Tide. The safety was paid a visit by defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley on Wednesday and Alabama is in his top three along with Florida State and Tennessee. I’m not confident in this pick, but there is a lot of momentum right now favoring the Tide.

Athlete:
Chadarius Townsend*, Tanner High School, Tanner, Ala.
Townsend is still being pursued by other schools and he’s told SEC Country that he wants to visit Florida, Florida State and LSU. He’s visited Georgia, too. Townsend is a true 4.4 40-yard dash guy. He can play either corner or wide receiver in college. He wants to be a kick and punt returner, too.

Are there any OT recruits that may raise their interest in Alabama due to Charles Baldwin’s dismissal?
(From @RollTideRichard)
For those that missed the big news Thursday, Alabama dismissed offensive tackle Charles Baldwin for a violation of team rules. Baldwin was rated as the nation’s No. 2 junior college player in the Class of 2016. He enrolled at Alabama in January. Baldwin was not expected to get much, if any, playing time this season but the loss of Baldwin opens up another scholarship.
At offensive tackle, Alabama’s main targets are five-star Isaiah Wilson and four-stars Austin Troxell, Trey Smith and Elliot Baker. The Tide also have a commitment from four-star Alex Leatherwood.
The thought before the Baldwin news broke was Alabama would sign four-to-five offensive linemen. My predictions in my first mock signing class included Troxell, Leatherwood and guards Wyatt Davis and Kendall Randolph.
Does this change Alabama’s plans now with how many offensive linemen it plans on signing this class? I don’t know. It’s too early to say. We will find out more information as the dust settles from this.
But to answer your question, I think out of the recruits I named, Baker’s interest may increase because he’s a junior college prospect. There’s always the time factor with JUCO prospects. He may see Baldwin’s dismissal as a chance to move up the depth chart quicker if he was to choose Alabama.

Besides Alabama commit VanDarius Cowan, who else is the team recruiting at outside linebacker?
(From @jplynn06)
Five-star Dylan Moses is the headliner out of this group. Alabama offered the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker when he was in eighth grade. At one point in his recruitment, Moses named Alabama as his leader. He has changed that, and now Texas leads with Alabama trailing right behind. Right now, I think he’ll end up at LSU. He pretty much grew up on that campus and before transferring to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). He played his high school ball at University Lab, which is pretty much across the street from Tiger Stadium. If Les Miles is still at LSU next season, I think Moses will be the Tigers. Alabama definitely will not give up, though.
Four-stars Robert Beal and Christopher Allen are also top targets. In the mock signing class I did on Wednesday, I have Alabama signing Allen. Allen has named Alabama his leader since February and that’s significant because he lives in Baton Rouge and most people believe that’s the school he will wind up at when he makes a commitment. Allen has made several visits to Tuscaloosa over the past several months, and that’s always a good sign. When it comes to Beal, Notre Dame — the school he was originally committed to — seems to be trending once again.

Do you think we will lose any of our current commitments?
(From @cometoBama)
Yes, I do. I think three-star defensive end Aaron Sterling won’t be a part of Alabama’s class. Georgia has made him a priority, and I just think there are higher-rated recruits that Alabama feels strongly about.
Then there’s five-star running back Najee Harris. I really have no clue what Harris is going to do at this point. He could stick with Alabama, butgoing elsewhere remains a possibility. He’s going to continue to take visits to other schools and welcome other coaches courting him for their programs. In every interview he does, he says he’s 100 percent committed. Sometimes, that really doesn’t matter. Keeping Harris on board is going to be a dogfight, but it’s a fight Alabama is willing to get in the cage for.
At this time, those are the only two commitments that I can see flipping.

What’s the deal with Nico Collins?
(From @CharlieKane_)
Collins told a reporter earlier this week that Michigan was “probably” his leader, which led to that publication running with that by calling the Wolverines his official leader. That’s not the case. He doesn’t have a top school right now.
But what looked to be a lock for Alabama several months ago doesn’t look so certain anymore. Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Clemson are all in the mix, but the out of state schools are definitely trending here. Collins visited Georgia for its spring game and came away from that impressed with freshman quarterback Jacob Eason.
Alabama has lost some ground here, but the Tide will be in it until the end. Collins is one of the team’s main wide receiver targets along with Devonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and Jeff Thomas.

quote:
What impact do you think Karl Dunbar will have on recruiting?
(From @AdamBuechler)
Karl Dunbar has what a lot of college assistants don’t have — double-digit years of NFL coaching experience. Almost every single recruit has dreams of playing in the NFL after their college experience is over. Dunbar knows what it takes to get to the NFL and how players can hone their skills to get to that level. Recruits want to hear about how you are going to prepare them for a possible future career in the NFL, and Dunbar can show every recruit his resume.
There is one potential negative with the hire — he hasn’t recruited for a school in 11 years since he was LSU’s defensive line coach. Recruiting has drastically changed since then. We won’t know how good of a recruiter Dunbar is for quite some time.
The defensive line is a huge focus for Alabama this class, so we will see if Dunbar is able to help the Tide land some of its major targets such as five-stars Marvin Wilson and Tyler Shelvin and four-stars LaBryan Ray and Ryan Johnson.

Back to SEC Country's class projection. This would be our class if they are correct:
Tua Tagovailoa
Najee Harris
Brian Robinson
Travis Etienne
Devonta Smith
Jerry Jeudy
Henry Ruggs
Jeff Thomas
Zech Byrd
Alex Leatherwood
Austin Troxell
Wyatt Davis
Kendall Randolph
LaBryan Ray
Isaiah Buggs
Aubrey Solomon
Ryan Johnson
Akial Byers
VanDarius Cowan
Gary Johnson
Will Ignont
Christopher Allen
Shaun Wade
Xavier McKinney
Maliek Gray
Chadarius Townsend
I believe that would only make two 3-stars in the whole class.
