Defensive tackle Derrick Brown from Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier showed up at the Elite 50 and backed up what we had seen on film during his junior year. He's 310 pounds with little bad weight and very light feet. He can beat you with power, he can shoot the gap with quickness and he has excellent agility and balance. He checks in at No. 7 overall now and is pushing Paramus (N.J.) Paramus Catholic defensive tackle Rashan Gary for that No. 1 defensive tackle spot.

The other new five-star is linebacker Ben Davis from Gordo, Ala., who showed at the Elite 50 that he has the coverage skills of an outside linebacker but the size and frame to be a massive inside linebacker at the next level. The biggest questions heading into the Elite 50 based on junior film were if Davis was better than fellow Alabama linebacker Lyndell Wilson from Montgomery (Ala.) Carver, and if he was the third five-star in the state for 2016. Davis showed that five-star ability we saw on film, and he and Wilson are neck-and-neck for that No. 1 linebacker spot in state. Davis checks in at No. 14, while Wilson slides just behind him at No. 16.

There was some shuffling at the top as another Georgia commitment, Lake Stevens, Wash, quarterback Jacob Eason tries to hold onto his national No. 1 spot but is being pursued heavily by a few big-time prospects. Montgomery (Ala.) Carver defensive end Marlon Davidson is a special prospect and could very well end up as No. 1 if he continues to develop, while Shreveport (La.) Calvary Academy quarterback Shea Patterson, who commits on Tuesday, is making the battle for the No. 1 quarterback and No. 1 overall a good one. Patterson continues to grow and has a rocket arm and the ability to move around. Eason, who remains No. 1, has great size, pocket presence and can make all the throws.

Let's take a look at some of the big risers and the lone big slider in this version of the Rivals100 for the class of 2016 as our team of analysts chimes in.

quote:

DT Derrick Brown
Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier

NEW RANK PREV. RANK DIFFERENCE
7 27 +20

"Last year at this time Brown weighed just about 280 pounds and looked to have the frame to bulk up and become a real force. Fast forward 12 months, and Brown is up to 315 pounds, with very little bad weight, and he still moves like a player much smaller. His combination of size and strength is rare to find, and it's easy to see why some of the nation's top programs are jockeying for his services. In addition to his physical attributes, Brown is just scratching the surface of his talent and should only continue to improve as he works on his game this offseason." -- Woody Wommack, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

LB Ben Davis
Gordo, Ala.

NEW RANK PREV. RANK DIFFERENCE
14 23 +9

"Davis was already ranked as the No. 23 overall player in the country during the last cycle, so after a very impressive performance at the Elite 50 experience, it's not a surprise to see him rise to five-star status. The 6-foot-4 Davis has added bulk to his long frame and it hasn't cost him one bit of the quickness that makes him elite at his position. His ability to cover ground in open space was unmatched at the event, and Davis has made an early claim to be the Southeast's top linebacker in the class." -- Woody Wommack, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

From Magilla from Bone (allegedly):

quote:

Here's some random shite you're gonna like from Bone and some stuff you will try to discredit. Some of it's is old news/re-confirmation, so bear with it.

*Marlon Davidson will come down to Bama and Auburn.
*Cristobal has been recruiting Rashan Gary for over 2 years, visiting in the Spring or Summer.
*Demetris Robertson is solid, but wants to play at the same school as his sister.
*Great shape for Derrick Brown, returning in the Spring.
*Greg Little will visit in the Spring. Committed to A&M, but showing interest in Bama.
*Dexter Lawrence has no favorites, will visit Bama in the Summer.
*Ben Davis isn't gonna commit anytime soon.
*Bama would have to choke to lose Mack Wilson. Everything in their favor.
*Bama isn't gonna get Daelin Hayes barring some miraculous visit. Michigan is the threat to USCw.
*Dredrick Snelson has early favorites of Auburn, UF, and FSU. Visiting for Junior Day next week.
*Eli Stove has been to Bama a lot, Bama has a great chance to add him if they simply push for him.
*Bama really likes Nigel Warrior, father is former Vol Dale Carter.
*Shy Carter is solid.
*Ole Miss is considered the favorite for Willie Allen. Long way to go.
*Mykel Jones is close with Daylon Charlot.
*Rashard Lawrence is still being evaluated by Bama.
*Dwayne Haskins will visit Bama in the Spring or Summer.
*Benito Jones grew up a Bama fan in a Bama family, Bama stays in contact.
*Bama is still evaluating Trayvon Mullen, good friends with Ridley and SBB(MG Note: And Eddie Jackson too)
*Khalil Ladler is now at IMG, Bama is behind FSU, UGA, and LSU. Highly regarded.
*Bama and UGa are considered the best bets to land Michail Carter right now.
*Marquez Calloway has a ton of interest in Bama, and comes from a Tide community. He isn't as high on Bama list though, visiting in the Spring.

Not sure where to put this and didn't want to start a thread, but, I've seen OJ Howard a few times this summer including last night. I'm just not convinced he has the bulk to be an effective inline TE. I've been around a lot of college TEs in the last 15 years and I can't recall meeting any at alabama or other D1 programs with his same body type. I'd estimate his true size to be about 6'5" 245. He looks a lot more like a jumbo receiver than a thin TE. I have real concerns about his ability to be successful as a blocker in our scheme; not only bc of his frame, but also based on conversations I've had with some of his former HS coaches.

I was wondering if anybody shared my concerns or had thoughts on how we would utilize the TE position this year.

I've always viewed him as a smaller Jimmy Graham. I think he would work better in a passing focused offense than a run one, with him split out as a wide receiver often. I think he can still learn to block well and improve upon it but it's never going to be above average unless he bulks and loses some speed.

I'd be okay with using him the way that OM uses Engram. Not really sure what to expect from our TEs this year other than inevitable disappointment.
