Cam Akers quote:

With Harris on board in the class already, Akers looks forward to competing with him on the practice field.

"I rise to the occasion when it comes to competition," Akers said. "That's not going to be a problem."

After thorough study using specific scoring criteria, Bleacher Report National Recruiting Analysts Damon Sayles, Sanjay Kirpalani and Tyler Donohue have graded the top 200 players in the 247Sports composite rankings and provided in-depth analysis on each young athlete. Bleacher Report will run a position-by-position breakdown series of the best college football recruits in the class of 2016. Here we present the Top Defensive Ends.

In today's game, a defensive end has to be able to showcase speed, elusiveness and power. It is expected to be one of the most versatile positions on the field.

Bleacher Report's CFB Recruiting 200 series will break down the top defensive ends in the 2016 class and grade them on key factors such as pass rushing, tackling, explosive strength, run defense, hands and overall motor.

How do the nation's top defensive end prospects measure up to one another?

23. 4-star SDE Khalid Kareem

Height/Weight: 6'4", 260 pounds

High School: Harrison High School; Farmington, Michigan

247Sports Ranking: No. 10 SDE; No. 193 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 90/100

Committed to Alabama on June 24, 2015

The defensive line is a position where Alabama loves to have depth. Alabama has a nice defensive end committed in Khalid Kareem, a player who has the potential to be a top defender in the SEC. Kareem committed last month and chose the Crimson Tide over 36 other reported offers. Among the other schools that offered were Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Mississippi State and the two schools closest to him, Michigan and Michigan State.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Kareem plays with a high level of intensity and a high motor. He uses his speed and overall energy to outplay opposing players. Kareem has good size and looks like a college-ready defensive end in pads. He plays with a mission to get better every play, and he doesn't back away from a challenge.

BOL on the QB Battle:
quote:

Who ultimately lines up at QB could actually hinge on the success of another position – the offensive line. The general feeling from sources close to the situation is that the play of the offensive line could go along way in determining how aggressive Nick Saban is at quarterback – and how long the leash will be for the starting QB

quote:

There’s hope this OL could be outstanding

quote:

If Coker can’t lead at an acceptable level, that could open the door for either Alec Morris or Cooper Bateman.

While neither Morris or Bateman have the physical talents of David Cornwell, Blake Barnett or Coker, sources close to the program tell BOL that the Alabama staff feels very comfortable that either player could run the offense and lead the team at this stage.

18. 4-star WDE Terrell Hall

Height/Weight: 6'5", 250 pounds

High School: St. John's College High School; Washington, D.C.

247Sports Ranking: No. 10 WDE; No. 144 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 92/100

Uncommitted: Considering Alabama, Maryland, Ole Miss, Ohio State and Penn State

Looking for a tough defender? Terrell Hall played his junior year with a torn meniscus in his right knee. Hall, who had surgery in February, is an intriguing defender about whom college fans are excited. He is now healthy and hungry. Hall committed to Ohio State on March 2 but recently decommitted to explore other options. He originally chose Ohio State over offers from Alabama, Penn State, Maryland and others.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Hall's length is an asset, but it's his overall versatility that makes him an intriguing player at the next level. He wants to play the game to where his knee no longer becomes a concern. Hall uses his height and lateral movement to disrupt offenses. He is quick off the ball and seems to be around the ball every play.

17. 4-star SDE Jeffrey Simmons

Height/Weight: 6'4", 262 pounds

High School: Noxubee County High School; Macon, Mississippi

247Sports Ranking: No. 8 SDE; No. 119 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 92/100

Uncommitted: Considering Auburn, Louisville, Mississippi State and Ole Miss

From the eyeball test alone, Jeffery Simmons looks like a college football athlete. He's big, strong and physical. Simmons is an uncommitted prospect who can be an impact player at the next level. Currently, the in-state battle of Ole Miss and Mississippi State is one to watch for his services. Louisville, Auburn and Clemson also are schools to keep an eye on.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Simmons is a big-bodied athlete who uses his hands well to outplay offensive linemen in one-on-one situations. He's a strong athlete who moves well from side to side, and when he's not rushing the quarterback, he serves as a solid run-stopper. At 262 pounds, Simmons already has the size of a college-ready defensive end. What coaches like is that he plays the game with a chip on his shoulder.

7. 4-star WDE Janarius Robinson

Height/Weight: 6'5 ½", 260 pounds

High School: Bay High School; Panama City, Florida

247Sports Ranking: No. 3 WDE; No. 57 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 94/100

Committed to Florida State on Sept. 21, 2014

A player like Janarius Robinson is always fun to watch. He can be dominant, but he never is in a position where he doesn't want to learn. Robinson learned a lot competing at The Opening, and he plans on using the tutelage in preparation for his time at Florida State. Robinson is committed to the Seminoles, but he's said he's keeping his recruiting door ajar. Alabama arguably is the team best fitted to flip Robinson if he chooses to decommit.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Robinson came to The Opening noticeably bigger, but he didn't appear to be slower. That's something Florida State coaches will love. Robinson is motivated by the recent success of defensive linemen to come through Florida State. He has the tools to be the next big thing in Jimbo Fisher's defense.

4. 5-star SDE Marlon Davidson

Height/Weight: 6'4", 260 pounds

High School: Greenville High School; Montgomery, Alabama

247Sports Ranking: No. 3 SDE; No. 23 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 96/100

Uncommitted: Considering Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan

Marlon Davidson is a guy who enjoys what he does on the football field. It's evident with every big play. Davidson will talk the talk but walk the walk on the field. He's a strong defensive end who can beat an offensive lineman with either power or technique. That's what makes him a wanted individual. Auburn is believed to be the leader in the Davidson sweepstakes, but schools like Alabama, Georgia and Michigan should not be overlooked.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Davidson has the quickness of a speed rush and the size of someone who could dominate as a run-stopper. He's got a level of confidence that coaches love, and he uses that confidence to his advantage on the field. Look for Davidson to be a big-time playmaker in college. In the right system, he has the tools to be a star player early in his career.

i was just reading that thing about his mom wanting him in a 4-3 so he could rush the QB. He is not going to be a 4-3 DE, especially since he is going to get even bigger once he hits college. hes gonna play inside and his job will still be to take up blocks, and push the pocket from the inside on passing downs. somebody is feeding her some garbage.

maybe when Dareus signs his contract making him one of the top 5 highest paid players in all of the NFL (maybe even highest) they will see that you can play inside, rush the passer, and get PAID.

Exactly. That is the kind of player gary can be, and he would fit in perfectly with what we do

The problem is the mom is already looking towards the NFL. Interior lineman don't get much pub in the league, but JJ Watt any others do. I know JJ plays in a 3-4, but he gets pub. They probably want him to get hype like Clowney. Plus, when was the last time an interior lineman taken 1st in the draft? The are being sold based on what they already want.
