Gotcha. Still a solid bloodline, I guess.

2 names to keep in mind to look to blow up this Spring are Tre Threat from Spanish Fort and Erroll Thompson from Florence. Thompson looks to be potentially a very good ILB prospect. Some in the high school coaching circles think Threat could be a 5* type of talent at LB/DE. The state is crazy loaded for front 7 defensive talent in 2016. Good time for that too! We REALLY need to hit the numbers hard on DL and ILB for 2016.

JUNIOR DAY REACTION: 2016 GORDO LINEBACKER BEN DAVIS
Ben Davis, a frequent visitor to the Capstone, will be a priority prospect in the 2016 class

Wayne Davis (left) & Ben Davis (right) could be another father/son duo to play for the Crimson Tide
Ben Davis, a standout linebacker from Gordo High School in West Alabama, was first profiled last June after being offered verbally by the UA staff following Nick Saban’s first elite camp in early June. Defensive line coach Bo Davis called the Tide legacy to inform him of his offer:
A football family and a Crimson Tide legacy. Davis, the 2016 standout for the Gordo Green Wave, is following in the large footsteps of his father, Wayne Davis, who himself was a prep standout at Gordo High School in the early 80s before becoming a star linebacker for the University of Alabama from ’83-’86. The elder Davis, actually recruited by Paul “Bear” Bryant, is still the all-time leader in career tackles at the Capstone with 327 and held the single-game record with 24 until Demeco Ryans broke it with 25 total stops vs. Arkansas in 2003.
The son, who as expected grew up a fan of the Crimson Tide, had a breakout season for the Green Wave in 2013 as a sophomore for first-year head coach Ryan Lolley. A standout on both sides of the football, Davis played wide receiver and tight end on offense, scoring 8 touchdowns. But following in his father’s footsteps, defense is the side of the football where the rising junior made his bones. Playing both middle and outside linebacker, the elite defender showcased his big-time ability as he tallied 70 tackles, 5 sacks and blocked a punt during which he scooped and scored. His versatility was also evident as Davis was effective dropping into coverage, recording 4 interceptions. STRONG.
Since the departure of lead recruiter Lance Thompson, Coach Tosh Lupoi has filled in that role and would be the position coach for the elite prospect. AlabamaINTEL recently talked with the Gordo star to update his recruitment:
AlabamaINTEL: What is your mindset in this early in your recruitment?
Ben Davis: “I am really enjoying it. I have decided to take my time with it and really enjoy my visits.”
AlabamaINTEL: Will you be enrolling early to whichever school you choose?
Ben Davis: “At first I thought about it, but now I know I want to wait this whole process out.”
AlabamaINTEL: How was your most recent visit to Alabama for Junior Day?
Ben Davis: “It went really well. This time they showed us things that do not necessarily have to do with football. They showed us the Dining Hall, the weight room, and the academics side of Alabama.”
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Wayne Davis during his playing days at the Capstone
—————————————————————————————————————————————
AlabamaINTEL: Does your dad, since he played for the Crimson Tide, influence your recruitment?
Ben Davis: “Not really, he wants me to go to the school of my choice. He said he will support whatever decision that I make.”
AlabamaINTEL: What part of your game are you going to be focusing on this off season?
Ben Davis: “Getting bigger, faster, stronger; After basketball, I will be working on my speed. I want to be able to hold 230 pounds, and become faster at the same time.”
AlabamaINTEL: Do you plan on committing early?
Ben Davis: “No, I want to wait it out and have my choices narrowed down by the Under Armour game. I might even commit at the Under Armour. I want to enjoy the process.”
The elite prospect will be attending many camps this offseason. He said he will be attending an Auburn Junior Day in the next few weeks, and will very likely be at Alabama’s annual A-Day game on April 18th. The Crimson Tide is in solid position for Davis, but will still recruit him hard, as locks in recruiting are becoming a rarity in this day of intense scrutiny during each cycle. It is still very early in the process and a lot can change quickly. But fully expect Davis to be a HUGE priority much like Lester Cotton & Daron Payne last season. A must have due to ability and lineage. Stay tuned as we will continue to follow Ben and talk to him throughout the process.
Qualifying will not be an issue for the Crimson Tide legacy as his GPA is a very solid 3.5 and Davis has already scored an 18 on the ACT. Other schools under consideration: Auburn, Arizona State, Florida, FSU, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Whether he comes our way now or later doesn't matter. He's UA bound in any case.

We got another CB for Cavin Ridley. Seeing them both split out wide would be epic. I only wish Verne was still announcing.

I thought I read somewhere that he was retiring
It could be wishful thinking

5 Alabama signees with versatility to play multiple roles
Print By Drew Champlin | dchamplin@al.com
It's common for players in a signing class to end up playing a different position from where they were originally listed.
Last year, Calera's Ronnie Clark signed as a defensive back, but was moved to running back before a season-ending injury. He could return at either spot. In 2012, Dakota Ball signed as a defensive lineman, but is now a tight end. Cyrus Jones has played receiver and cornerback. Blake Sims has played running back before finishing as the Crimson Tide's quarterback as a senior. Those are just a few examples.
Here are some examples of players from this year's signing class who have the versatility to move around.
Bo Scarbrough, 6-2, 235, RB
Scarbrough was a 5-star recruit who signed in 2014, but delayed enrollment because of academics. He is listed as a running back and practiced there in Alabama's workouts before traveling to the Sugar Bowl. Scarbrough could be a big star there, or could excel somewhere else with Alabama's depth at the position. He could work in a hybrid fullback/H-back/tight end role, or even be a big receiver. Time will tell if his career shapes out more like Derrick Henry or Jalston Fowler, but it should be a good one.
Keaton Anderson, 6-1, 215, ILB
The Florence native will probably start out as a key special teams player before growing into what he'll become on defense - either an inside linebacker, outside linebacker or possibly a defensive back. Anderson mentioned he could get a look at the "money" position, an extra defensive back on passing downs, but he manned the middle for the Falcons in high school. He'll fit in somewhere, that's for sure.
Anfernee Jennings, 6-3, 255, LB
The Dadeville standout is listed as a linebacker, but recruiting services list him as a defensive end. Jennings could play either, growing into a pass-rushing end. Or, Jennings could move over and play tight end. He has the frame and abilities to do that, and Alabama tried to sign another tight end to go along with Hale Hentges, but could not.
Lester Cotton, 6-4, 320, OL
There isn't much drama here. Cotton will play on the offensive line. But he's good enough to play guard or tackle. Cotton was the left tackle for Central-Tuscaloosa, but recruiting services listed him as one of the top guards in the country. Nick Saban said Cotton could play tackle and probably will get his first look there since Alabama missed out on the likes of Isaiah Prince (Ohio State) and Drew Richmond (Tennessee) at left tackle.
DeSherrius Flowers, 6-1, 210, RB
The Vigor standout enrolled early and he is another player who could end up on either side of the ball. There have been comparisons to former Alabama safety Mark Barron, though Flowers will start his career on offense. If he isn't a feature back, Flowers figures to be big enough to play a Jalston Fowler role as well.

There wasn't much drama on National Signing Day for Alabama, but the Crimson Tide had the No. 1 class according to the 247Sports composite ranking, and the No. 2 class on Rivals and Scout. It was another banner year for the Crimson Tide coaching staff, which rounded up most commitments before last summer.
Let's take a quick look into the class and wrap it up before moving onto the class of 2016.

TOP OFFENSIVE GEM
This goes to Coconut Creek, Fla., standout wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The five-star recruit is Alabama's highest ranked recruit on the 247Sports composite, checking in at No. 11. Ridley was The Opening's overall MVP and dominated during his abbreviated three-game senior season.
I was surprised at how relatively smooth Ridley and SBB's recruitments were. I thought they'd be total shite shows.

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield, another 5-star recruit, checks in at No. 20 on the 247Sports composite rankings. Sheffield has good size at 6-feet and 180 pounds and has track star speed.

READY TO PLAY EARLY - OFFENSE
Alabama doesn't have many certainties coming back at receiver, so look for Ridley to be thrown into the fire early. Bo Scarbrough, a 5-star signee from 2014 who had to delay enrollment because of academics, is too talented to sit on the bench. He'll play as a running back or an H-back/fullback. Or, maybe the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Northport native can play receiver.

READY TO PLAY EARLY - DEFENSE
Junior college defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor comes with baggage, but he's the most ready to play of this group and fills a need at nose tackle. But it's a lot harder, though more fun, to project which freshmen will play early. One of the two freshmen safeties already enrolled - Deionte Thompson and Ronnie Harrison - will ascend into a big role in the defensive backfield and both will be helped by enrolling early for spring practice.

SLEEPER - OFFENSE
In 2012, Chris Black was the true freshman receiver most talked about, but it was Amari Cooper who shined after a preseason injury to Black and the rest is history. The roles could be the same this year with Daylon Charlot, a standout from tiny Patterson, La., who could excel on the big stage in the SEC. The opportunities are there to play and shine early.
It's funny that a four star wide receiver could be considered a sleeper. Guess that shows how loaded this class was.

SLEEPER - DEFENSE
Like Charlot, it's hard to call any 4-star recruit a sleeper, but Lawrenceville, Ga., standout Adonis Thomas isn't as talked about as the 5-star defensive backs in the group. Thomas is big (6-foot-4) and athletic at 230 pounds. He could be an every down linebacker eventually, his coach says, but could sneak into the two-deep at one of the inside linebacker positions this year. Remember, Alabama lost Trey DePriest to graduation, Reuben Foster has had trouble staying healthy and Shaun Dion Hamilton and Keith Holcombe have just a year up in the system.
Adonis is probably top five in my favorite recruits of this class. I think he's going to be really good.

BIGGEST SURPRISE SIGNEE
Maybe it's a surprise to list it here, but quarterback Blake Barnett's commitment came quickly and almost out of the blue. Alabama recruited him early, but he committed to Notre Dame. He reopened his recruitment and when most thought Oregon signee Travis Waller was the top guy on the board, Barnett visited Tuscaloosa for several days in June and the five-star recruit committed right after the visit. He became the face of the recruiting class and helped recruit several top prospects to Tuscaloosa, including five-star running back Damien Harris.
Let's be real. There was no Signing Day drama for Alabama. Momentum was on Alabama's side when Charlot announced his decision, and momentum was heading elsewhere on recruits who signed elsewhere. But thinking back to June, Barnett's commitment certainly came without months of buildup.

ONE THAT GOT AWAY
Alabama wanted another offensive tackle and thought it had one when Greenbelt, Md., standout Isaiah Prince "committed" on Jan. 23. But the commitment was shaky from the start. He officially visited Ohio State that weekend and signed with the Buckeyes on Wednesday. If Prince had signed, Alabama likely keeps Lester Cotton inside, but Cotton could play tackle and 6-foot-7 Matt Womack definitely will play tackle. Another late miss included receiver K.J. Hill to Ohio State and Alabama also struggled to land a second tight end, with the likes of Jackson Harris going to Georgia and Jalen Harris going to Auburn.
Hoping we can get two TEs this class. Our depth is looking at TE is looking a little shaky. I don't understand why we don't have TEs lining up at the door to commit. Who wouldn't want to be coached by Bobby Williams?
Posted on 2/8/15 at 10:49 pm to chattabama
Coaching has a lot to do with it, but not as much as not using them. If you want to win championships and play as a 6th lineman, come to Bama. Kiffin has the opportunity to break that wide open, but right now no one remembers McElwain using the TEs like he did.
The sooner Kaden Smith commits the better, so they can work on #2 to pair with him. Someone like Jamal Couch or maybe try to flip Landon Rice from Auburn. It's not like they can pitch production there either...

That's true. Our use of TEs this year was disappointing.
Do you think that was Kiffin's offensive plan or did he have to make do because of a lack of talent/readiness at the position?
