Safety is a position that has become a valued commodity in the college game today.
Players at the spot have to be versatile enough to cover receivers and tight ends, and they have to be physical defenders in run support.
The 2015 group has a number of elite athletes, headlined by 5-star Florida State pledge Derwin James, who is the No. 6 player overall in the 2015 class.
The latest batch in Bleacher Report's CFB 200 series will focus on safeties, scoring them on their abilities in key metrics such as ball skills (20 points), tackling (30 points), run support (25 points) and pass coverage (25 points). The cumulative figures from those traits resulted in our overall grade of each prospect.
How does the 2015 group of safeties stack up?

Per AlabamaIntel FWIW:
quote:
1. The major news of the day is Memphis University High School Offensive Tackle Drew Richmond was visited at his school today by UA head coach Nick Saban and lead recruiter Billy Napier. Richmond, who has been committed to the Ole Miss Rebels since September 9th, 2014, had previously cancelled an official visit to the Capstone on January 16th due to a death in the family. Most felt this signaled that Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss would sign Richmond almost assuredly after the Crimson Tide had made a strong push late in the regular season when the 6-5 310-pounder skipped the Egg Bowl to attend the Iron Bowl. Then the momentum continued during the week of the Under Armour All-American game when the re-shaped OT spent much of his time with Alabama OL commit Brandon Kennedy, who enrolled early. The Rebel staff met with Richmond leading up to the visit to UA, which, as mentioned above, was cancelled. But recruiting can be a roller coaster ride and word today following the visit with Saban and Napier is that a possible visit to the Capstone is in the works. Nick Saban is returning tonight to have his in-home with the elite OT. It will be discussed tonight with Richmond and his family as his previously scheduled visit to Texas looks now to not be happening. “IF” the visit does indeed happen, the Rebels will be VERY nervous as the dead period approaches before signing day. As Crimson Tide fans know, recruiting head-to-head with out-of-state kids against Ole Miss has been very tough…INTEL will continue to monitor this situation.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
2. The on-going pursuit of Richmond likely is the reason Isaiah Prince, who still is in play with Alabama, was told of the numbers crunch this weekend. As INTEL reported yesterday, Prince was told a Scholarship was not guaranteed at this time and will now trip to Ohio State this weekend and in-state Maryland on the 30th. If the Richmond pursuit is not fruitful and Richmond shuts down his recruitment after taking his official visit this weekend to Oxford (very possible), then look for the Tide staff to turn up the heat on Prince. UA is also still heavily pursuing reclassified OT Chidi Okeke-Valentine from First Baptist Christian Academy in Ludowici, Georgia. The 6-6 305-pounder excelled at the Army All-American Bowl and is said to have the biggest upside potential of the three top targets left. The Nigerian immigrant’s only drawback is that much like Bo Scarbrough last season, the elite OL transferred multiple times and could have transcript (grade) issues. He could still qualify but a stop in prep school could also happen. If UA could gain the pledge of Richmond or Prince, taking COV and placing him at a prep school would be ideal, though if he qualifies, gaining three OTs this late in the cycle would be huge. Okeke-Valentine is said to favor UA as of this writing, so this situation will be watch closely, especially with the numbers being tight.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
3. Speaking of numbers, the University of Alabama sits at 25 “public” commitments with a 26th (Daylon Charlot) likely being a private. INTEL believes Shreveport, Louisiana, defensive tackle T.D. Moton is already going elsewhere and officially visited Starkville, Mississippi, last weekend. Two other commitments, both defensive backs, could sign elsewhere. One who has been heavily rumored to ultimately land at another SEC school is Hampton, Georgia’s Montrell Custis. The Lovejoy High School star, who flipped from Kentucky to UA last April, visited UK last weekend. Once Missouri City, TX, cornerback Kendell Sheffield committed to Alabama on January 2nd at the Under Armour game, Custis has been one to watch. Originally, the 5-11 183-pounder was set to visit the Capstone this weekend. As late as last week, this still was the case but do not be surprised if the a trip to another SEC West school occurs instead. INTEL reached out to Custis today but have not confirmed his plans for the weekend as of yet, but do not be surprised if the Georgia native migrates to Oxford, Mississippi, in a few days. Another commitment to watch is Nashville, Tennessee, defensive back Rico McGraw. As has been well-documented, the Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee first pledged to Jeremy Pruitt & UGA last January 16th before flipping to Alabama on July 31st, 2014. However, Pruitt, his lead recruiter, has continued to strongly pursue him. The UGA DC and head coach Mark Richt met with the elite defender this past Monday and a visit has been scheduled for this weekend in Athens. If McGraw makes this trip, this will be a situation to watch closely. His mother is said to still favor Alabama. The UA staff covets the 5-11 195-pounder and wants him in the class.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
4. From a numbers standpoint, not counting Moton and with Custis VERY likely to sign elsewhere, that would leave UA at 24, and Daylon Charlot, as mentioned above, would put the number at 25. The final number on signing day is very likely to be 27 or 28. A third wide receiver is wanted (and likely) which would leave 1-2 spots, depending on Rico McGraw. If Alabama holds onto his pledge, likely one more prospect will be added, likely an OT, but if a flip to UGA occurs, then two OTs could be teamed with Matt Womack on February 4th…this will be very interesting to monitor over the next two weeks.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
5. Nick Saban and Billy Napier have been on the road today first visiting the above mentioned Richmond, then seeing offensive lineman pledge Matt Womack of Magnolia Heights, Mississippi, this afternoon before traveling to for an in-home visit to see linebacker commit Joshua McMillon of Memphis-White Station High School in Tennessee. Another trip on the itinerary for tomorrow is for the recently reclassified Prince Tega Wanogho of Edgewood Academy in Elmore, Alabama. The AISA standout transferred to the school in August after migrating from his native Nigeria. He had never played organized football before, as basketball was thought to be his future. But the 6-8 245-pounder decided to give football a shot for Edgewood Academy head coach Bobby Carr. Following his season, which saw the raw prospect credited with 82 tackles, eight fumble recoveries, four sacks and two forced fumbles, many national powers such as Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Stanford, Oregon, Notre Dame and many others offered him. He visited LSU last weekend, but last night he suffered a broken leg in his basketball game. Thankfully, the break was clean and surgery went well this morning and a full recovery is expected. All the schools have honored his offer, with Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze appearing at the hospital today. Alabama has still not offered , but Director of Player Development Kerry Stevenson stopped by the school to see Tega last week with Nick Saban and UA DC Kirby Smart set to see the first-year gridiron standout on Thursday. An official visit could very well be set up, but a place in the 2015 class, at this point, is unlikely. With all the moving parts, and the roller coaster of recruiting. anything can happen, but a grayshirt is the most likely scenario involving Tega and Alabama. Look for the intriguing AISA prospect to very likely end up elsewhere after national signing day.

12. 4-star Ronnie Harrison
Height/Weight: 6'3", 205 lbs
High School: Florida State University School, Tallahassee, Fla.
247 Ranking: No. 12 S/No. 195 Overall
Bleacher Report Score: 90/100
Committed to Alabama on July 29, 2014
Ronnie Harrison has had one of the more interesting recruitments of the 2015 cycle. Despite playing in Florida State's backyard, he committed to fellow ACC school North Carolina in July 2013.
However, a flurry of interest from top schools earlier this spring resulted in him eventually flipping his commitment to Alabama.
He took a number of visits to FSU and one to Georgia, but he enrolled early at Tuscaloosa in January.
Bleacher Report Analysis
Harrison is an athletic safety with tremendous size on the back end. He's got great range and sound instincts in pass coverage. He's also a big hitter who can be an intimidating presence when covering the middle of the field. With his size, it's not out of the question that he could grow into a linebacker at the next level.

2. Deionte Thompson
Height/Weight: 6'2", 181 lbs
High School: West Orange-Stark High, Orange, Texas
247 Ranking: No. 2 S/No. 44 Overall
Bleacher Report Score: 94/100
Committed to Alabama on Feb. 23, 2013
Deionte Thompson attended Alabama's Junior Day back in February 2013.
When he earned an offer on that trip, he immediately committed and became the first pledge of what is now the nation's top class.
He remained firm in that commitment and enrolled early in Tuscaloosa this January.
Bleacher Report Analysis
Thompson is a flat-out playmaker, as evidenced by the fact that he had 11 interceptions over the course of his sophomore and junior seasons. He was also a standout receiver during his prep career, which illustrates his ability to attack the ball in the air when he's on defense. His range and athleticism should fit well in Nick Saban's secondary.

The 2015 recruiting class features a stockpile of impressive passers who appear ready to make an early impact in college. Though these quarterbacks remain largely unpolished, it's always important to project the potential of a possible offensive leader.
We examined the top 10 players at the position in this class and aimed to match their skill sets to current NFL quarterbacks. Here's a review of each comparison, though each prospect has plenty to prove before joining the pros.

5-star Blake Barnett
247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 2 pro-style QB; No. 21 overall
High School: Santiago (Corona, California)
Size: 6'4.5", 200 lbs
Recruitment Status: Enrolled at Alabama
Pro-Player Comparison: Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers
Blake Barnett is rated as a pro-style quarterback in composite rankings, but he could easily land on the dual-threat list. His ability to sustain plays and do damage downfield as a runner are key reasons why Alabama fans are so compelled by his potential.
"Coach (Lane) Kiffin and Coach (Nick) Saban were very fond about the idea of their quarterback being able to run the ball several times in each game," Barnett told Bleacher Report this summer. "It's something they were looking for and it made sense as a fit for me."
Barnett gained 1,174 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground as an upperclassman. He's a long-striding runner who picks up steam in a hurry, much like Kaepernick.
Barnett doesn't flash the rifle that Kaepernick currently boasts, but he could approach that level of velocity through physical development, and he threw for a career-high 3,392 yards in 2014. Accuracy can be a shortcoming for both quarterbacks, but their balanced skill sets and desirable size create an intriguing combination.

California, Florida and Texas are among the hotbeds that produce a bevy of stud college football recruits on an annual basis.
When it comes to individual cities that have turned out a number of 5-star prospects, those states are represented by cities such as Los Angeles, Miami and Dallas.
However, in addition to those talent-laden territories, three other cities have produced at least 10 5-star recruits over the last decade.
Which cities stand out as having produced the most 5-star recruits in recent years?

Just Missed the Cut
A few notable cities such as Orlando, New Orleans and Houston lead the pack of towns that just missed the cut.
Orlando has produced eight 5-star prospects since 2006—with 5-star offensive tackle Martez Ivey being the latest in a long line of stud recruits from the Central Florida area.
In 2014, New Orleans produced a trio of 5-stars that include current LSU running back Leonard Fournette and receiver Malachi Dupre, and Texas A&M receiver Speedy Noil.
Current Alabama pledge and 5-star corner Kendall Sheffield is one of seven Houston-area products to achieve the pinnacle rating given by recruiting services.

5. Tie: Tampa and Washington DC
Tampa and Washington, D.C. have produced 10 5-star recruits each over the last decade.
Byron Cowart—the nation’s No. 3 overall prospect in the 2015 cycle—is the latest of three former Armwood High School standouts who have developed into 5-star prospects.
Receivers Deon Cain, who is committed to Clemson, and George Campbell, who has already enrolled at Florida State, are following in the footsteps of recent standout skill players such as Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves III and USC’s Nelson Agholor.
A pair of standouts from the 2014 class, including current Alabama defensive end Da’Shawn Hand and Florida corner Jalen Tabor, headline the crop of talent emerging from the Washington, D.C. area.
Tabor follows talented D.C.-area corners such as Virginia Tech’s Kendall Fuller and Florida State’s Ronald Darby as lockdown defenders who have emerged from the nation’s capital.

4. Atlanta
Offensive tackles Mitch Hyatt and Chuma Edoga are two of the nation’s top offensive tackle prospects in the 2015 cycle, and they represent two of the 12 5-star recruits Atlanta has produced in the last decade.
The talented left tackles are the top two prospects in what is a deep year for talent in the capital of the Peach State.
In the previous two years, defensive linemen such as Robert Nkemdiche, Carl Lawson and Lorenzo Carter dominated during their prep careers en route to the fields of the SEC.
2016 5-star defensive tackle Julian Rochester appears to be the next Atlanta-area big man who will emerge as one of the nation’s top prospects next fall.

3. Miami
Miami has been one of the epicenters of talent for college recruits all over the country.
Given that the talent pool has always been seemingly bottomless in the South Florida area, Miami has always been the anchor—with 14 former studs who have earned the 5-star rating since 2006.
Current Alabama receiver pledge Calvin Ridley will look to duplicate the college success of recent stars such as Dalvin Cook and Duke Johnson.
In 2016, 5-star defensive end Nick Bosa—the younger brother of Ohio State All-American defensive end Joey Bosa—headlines a deep crop of potential stars from the South Florida area.

2. Dallas/Fort Worth
Talent galore abounds in the Lone Star State, but it’s the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area that has been the premier haven of talent in the state of Texas.
Texas A&M freshman All-American defensive end Myles Garrett is one of 20 former 5-star recruits from the area in the last decade.
The 2015 class is represented by Texas linebacker commitment Malik Jefferson, Texas A&M quarterback pledge Kyler Murray and stud running back Soso Jamabo.
With 5-star offensive tackle and current Aggies commitment Gregory Little having been tabbed as the nation’s top prospect in the 2016 cycle, expect recruiters to continue to flock to Big D in droves for years to come.

1. Los Angeles
No city has been more bountiful for producing 5-star prospects in recent years than Los Angeles.
The football hub of the Golden State has groomed 26 standouts who have earned the coveted benchmark in recruiting circles.
Josh Rosen, a 5-star passer who recently enrolled early at UCLA, will play his college football less than 30 miles away from the fields where he became known as one of the nation’s top signal-callers in the 2015 class.
With powerhouse high schools such as Dorsey, Poly and Serra annually producing elite talent, the metro L.A. area is primed to continue developing top-flight recruits for years to come.
