Going back to last year’s season opener, all four starting defensive backs are no longer with the Crimson Tide. While coaches are going with a sort of a strength-in-numbers attitude at cornerback until two starters emerge, safety Landon Collins is the player the unit will build around.
Filling in for suspended Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and then injured Vinnie Sunseri, who have since been drafted by NFL teams, the junior made nine starts last season and was second in team tackles with 70.
In comparison, Clinton-Dix played in 38 career games, with 20 starts, and Sunseri participated in 29 games with 14 starts.
Converted cornerback Geno Smith will likely go into the fall as the player to beat at the other safety spot, with senior Nick Perry challenging. Jarrick Williams is established as the slot defender in the nickel package, and he was backed up by sophomore cornerback Maurice Smith during the spring.
Early enrollee Laurence “Hootie” Jones turned some heads during the spring and at minimum provides some depth and will be potentially ready to step in next year.
At cornerback, Deion Belue was the closest thing Alabama had to stability at the position in 2013, and he struggled with a season-long toe/foot injury. Sophomore Eddie Jackson appeared poised to secure one of the spots in the spring only to sustain a torn ACL.
Coaches went with juniors Bradley Sylve and Cyrus Jones with the first unit during A-Day, while 247Sports ranked early enrollee Tony Brown and incoming freshman Marlon Humphrey the first and second cornerbacks in the recruiting Class of 2014.

There are only two Alabama specialists who know what their roles will be in the fall, senior Christion Jones and sophomore Cole Mazza. Everything else is up for grabs.
After making Alabama fans a little nervous by the way he would field bouncing kicks in 2012, Jones was seventh in the nation in kick returns (28.7 average) and 15th in punt returns (14.4) last season.
Meanwhile, Mazza didn’t have a failed snap during his freshman year.
Sophomore Adam Griffith is in place to inherit the kicking duties, but he has to win the job against incoming freshman JK Scott, who is also the expected punter. In turn, his competition to replace Cody Mandell, who had been Alabama’s punter for 52 games over four years, is walk-on Tuck Borie from nearby Hoover High School.
As for who will be on the coverage units, that will largely be determined during training camp, with the Crimson Tide expected to be back on the practice fields in approximately two months

At 6'4" and 208 pounds, Quinten Dormady is at his best when he can stand tall in the pocket to rifle throws downfield.
He needs to get a bit more flexible and speed up his approach, but the 3-star quarterback has a solid stroke. Dormady has above-average arm strength to attack defenses up the seams and on the perimeter, plus his ball-placement skills aren't too shabby.
He's not going to elude many defenders and make a ton of dazzling runs, but he can be effective when working in a clean pocket. Indiana, Kentucky and TCU are among several schools who have offered the Texan, says 247Sports.

Darian Roseboro is a 4-star defensive end who is already 6'3" and 293 pounds. The 4-star prospect can play on the edges, but he could be on track to becoming a penetrating defensive tackle.
Roseboro's versatility is the reason why so many schools are after him. He recently narrowed his list to 10 finalists, and he will make several visits this summer.
While the talented defender is still sorting out dates and finalizing his itinerary, schools such as Alabama, North Carolina State, North Carolina, LSU and Tennessee can expect to see him before the fall arrives, according to TarHeelIllustrated.com (subscription required)

Hailing from Virginia, Ricky DeBerry will be quite visible this summer. When his senior season starts later this year, there's a chance the 4-star linebacker will have already visited more than 10 schools.
Clemson and South Carolina will likely have seen him on campus by the end of this month, and Alabama, Auburn, Miami, UCLA and USC can also expect DeBerry to check them out in person this summer, says William Weathers of TigerBait.com (subscription required).
At 6'2.5" and 255 pounds, DeBerry is a big linebacker who can also help rush the passer. His summer visits will go a long way in helping him make a decision.

Jamal Peters is a 4-star safety who can play in the box or up high. The 6'3", 200-pounder can chase ball-carriers well in pursuit, plus he has solid athleticism and ball skills to defend passing plays.
From Mississippi, Peters has both in-state schools among his top suitors. He plans to camp at Ole Miss on June 6, according to Mike Singer of CardinalSports.com (subscription required). The Rebels will likely do all they can to make sure Peters has a good experience.
June 27 also is a big day for Peters, as that is when he will be at Florida and Florida State.

A 4-star safety from Georgia, Rashad Roundtree is a hot commodity around the South. His athleticism and physicality make him an ideal defender to have in the secondary.
While Georgia appears to be in good position with him, Roundtree will see some other schools during the summer.
He told the following to Jake Reuse of UGASports.com (subscription required) on May 25:
"I'm planning on visiting Ohio State, probably South Carolina, and the schools close by also, like Clemson and Alabama."
Don't hear much of Bama with Roundtree

If a school wants 5-star defensive end Byron Cowart, then it needs to get in line with a ton of others. The Florida native has the ability to dominate the edges with strength and quickness at 6'4" and 250 pounds.
Being from the Sunshine State, one would think Florida or Florida State would be the leader for Cowart. However, based on a report by A.J. Jacobson of Duck Sports Authority (subscription required), Oregon seems to be the favorite right now.
Cowart will be at The Opening in early July, which takes place in the state of Oregon. However, he plans to visit Eugene later in the summer to allow his mother to check out the Ducks with him.
If things go right during the visit, the Ducks will be in a prime position to pull off a huge coup.

Bleacher Report's Perfect College Football Starting Lineup for 2014
For the third and final receiver on this here dream team, we're going with someone who had a production dip in 2013: Alabama's Amari Cooper.
It's risky to include him on this list when he had just four receiving touchdowns as a sophomore—while others tore it up on the field—but there's no denying his talent.
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 202
Credentials: Consensus Freshman All-American; had 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman
Cooper had a disappointing year in 2014, even though he led the team with 45 receptions and 736 yards. Until the Iron Bowl against Auburn, he failed to catch more than five passes in a game. But against the Tigers, and in the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma, he combined for 15 receptions for 299 yards.
He has blazing speed, runs crisp routes and can make plays on the ball—all of the things a No. 1 receiver should do. He gets a mulligan for 2013 and should be one of the top receivers in the country this year.

Filling in the other guard position is Alabama's Arie Kouandjio, the older brother of former Alabama offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio.
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 315
Like Amari Cooper, this selection comes with a bit of a risk. Kouandjio has had injury problems in the past that have derailed his chances of being one of the best in the country.
Still, we're banking on Kouandjio healing up nicely and putting together a solid season. He has the athleticism to be a beast in run-blocking. If he can stay on the field, he's a special player.
Of all the guards in college football to pick and you choose Arie K? Someone has not been watching Bama football. I know it's BR, but still

The other safety spot goes to a guy who is, pound for pound, one of the best defenders in the nation: Alabama's Landon Collins.
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 215
Credentials: Associated Press Second-Team All-SEC selection
Collins is physical, and his best football is played against the run. However, he's a sound tackler whether he's coming up in run support or preventing a pass play from netting more yards. He also has exceptional closing speed.
Collins is a remarkable talent, but he's still evolving as a starting safety. By the time he leaves for the NFL, there's little doubt here that he'll be one of the best at that position.

All this Dream Team needs is a perfect head coach.
Our choice is Alabama's Nick Saban.
Oh, sure, there are other worthy candidates: Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Baylor's Art Briles, Ohio State's Urban Meyer and Stanford's David Shaw all come to mind.
But Saban has built another dynasty in Tuscaloosa, winning three national championships. The Tide are at the top of the rankings nearly every year and put together some of the best recruiting classes on a consistent basis.
Saban takes those players and puts them in the NFL, too. He's 79-15 in seven seasons with Alabama, and he's already earned a statue outside of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
There's no coach in the game today who has done as much

NFL.com top JUCO transfers to watch in 2014
6. DE Jarran Reed, Alabama
Particulars: 6-4, 310, junior; transfer from East Mississippi CC, originally from Goldsboro (N.C.) High (also attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., for one year after high school).
Buzz: Reed signed with Florida in the 2013 recruiting class after only one season of junior college ball, but came up short of the required credits and re-entered the recruiting scene. This time, he signed with Alabama and is expected to play a major role for a Tide defense that lost both starting ends from its 3-4 set. While some schools recruited Reed as a defensive tackle, he fits at end for the Tide. He had 66 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss playing defensive tackle for East Mississippi last season, then looked good in spring practice for the Tide.

Cooper made nfl.com list of most explosive athletes in cfb
quote:
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Particulars: 6-1, 202, junior.
Buzz: Cooper's production dropped in 2013 (58 receptions in '12 to 45 last season), but that was a case of Alabama spreading the wealth through the air. Cooper remains a dangerous weapon. He had four receptions of at least 50 yards last season, giving him seven in two seasons. He also has 16 catches that have covered at least 30 yards and 29 of at least 20 yards in his two seasons. He owns a career per-catch average of 16.8 yards and has scored 15 TDs.

Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
Another standout hurdler, Humphrey heads to the Capstone as a five-star corner in high school. He comes from a very athletic family (his dad Bobby was a star for Tide and spent several years in the NFL) and should push teammate Tony Brown on the track and on the field.

Tony Brown, DB, Alabama
Brown figures to be in the mix at corner for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman, but is already making a name on campus for his work on the track. A standout hurdler, he finished high school as the state record holder (4A) in the 110-meter hurdles and continues to shave time off in college, including a blazing fast 60-meter hurdle time of 7.83 seconds.
