Billy Napier

I have been thinking he is a low key possibility as our next coach. He has done a good job at ULL. It was just a question of how long it would take before he'd get a better job. State is not an easy place to win though.

I attempted to tell a "friend" at Mizzou several years ago (when he was still on our staff) that Napier is who they should hire.

Hopefully ULL will hire Applewhite as HC and then he'll hire Golding as his DC. They'd both be good fits there. If Saban isn't able to get a new DC at this juncture that he wants from outside, imo Charles Kelly would be a pretty good upgrade over Golding as DC/ILB coach. He coached DBs and then ILBs under Pruitt at FSU, became DC after Richt hired Pruitt at UGA, and then was at UT with Pruitt and DC Ansley. So, Kelly has learned both the front & back ends of Saban's defense the way Pruitt liked to coach it.

PG leaving would be fine by me and it is true that promoting Kelly ticks several boxes:
-continuity;
-prior experience as a DC;
-prior experience coaching ILBs;
-familiarity with Pruitt's style of defense (which in turn is what Saban wants out of his defense);
-good recruiter.

Charles Kelly was FSU's defensive coordinator from 2014-2017. His defenses allowed 23.7 points per game against Power-5 opponents during this time. Kelly was not expected to be retained as FSU's DC before then FSU coach Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M and then new FSU coach Willie Taggart did not retain him when he put together his then new staff.

I'm a newbie here, don't know half as most of you know. I was just wondering whether Kelly'd be enough of an upgrade.

At this point, anyone not named Pete Golding is an upgrade.

Bo, what’s the status on State? Like with recruits. I know that you went to a game this year. They get some kids to sign on ESD and then fire the coach. Any sort of backlash like with Orgeron and DMV?

Most the big ones seem to be staying and committed to the team.. only one that I have heard mixed thoughts on was Janari Dean. He might not enroll early now.. the rest are schedule to be there tomorrow.. so no time to really process

Also maybe DILLON JOHNSON.. it really will depend on the hire too. It hurts they struck out on Napier. Players and recruits were pretty excited about him

I heard last night there would be some posturing over the weekend to try and keep the hire quiet until after the bowl game but maybe something changed. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Honestly that could be the case.. I know Napier has signed a two year extension with Louisianna Lafayette. Through 2025.. also reports are he pulled out, but we know how this can change fast. I think it’s crazy but seems Cohen really has his heart set on a MSU guy. Someone with ties to the school.. Maybe going to try his best LSU remake with coach O? That’s where Judge keeps popping up from., but honestly Cohen is so damn tight lipped there is no telling who they will get. His last hires have been off the radar with JoMo and Baseball. I will say JoMo was a great hire on paper.. it just didn’t work out for state. SEC is tough for State.. bottom tier and recruiting against the big boys. I think they need a coach with southern ties and experience recruiting in the SEC. but we will see.. that’s why I would have liked the Napier hire for them. Kiffin is going to give who ever hell in recruiting too.. so they better be ready

I also heard about the extension Billy signed; his second in just a few months. But the strange thing is the buyout remained the same, $1.25 million. That’s not big enough to scare away an SEC school.

Maybe something happened between last night and this afternoon to change Billy’s mind or maybe the “deal” I was told about being reached was premature. I am watching this situation with great interest to see who is right and what happened should my rare news tidbit turn out to be wrong.

I agree that is very strange and heard about that buyout too. It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if a backdoor deal has been made. One thing I have to give Cohen credit on is he doesn’t leak or talk.. and he usually has a plan and acts quickly.
I know Steve Robertson still thinks it Napier too.. I can honestly say the players and 2 of the recruits I know have no idea..lol

Dallas Cowboys have reportedly hired Mike McCarthy so Lincoln Riley is still at OU for now. Let's hope McCarthy knows Joe Brady.
