Are any Birmingham or Huntsville/Madison breweries making good lagers or pilsners?
I enjoy those styles but they're not my jam. I've got a friend organizing a veteran's trip that needs some ideas.

I would like to know this too

Specifically lagers or pilsners?
Ghost Train in Birmingham has a lager I am pretty sure.

I'm very familiar with GP, Cahaba, Trim Tab, and Avondale. I'm unfamiliar with Goat Traib and Red Hills?
It sounds like this group is most familiar with macro stuff and therefor the malt driven, light beers are the best match. I know Cahaba has a successful blonde aswell as a seasonal Oktoberfest that gets good reviews.
What's Ghost Train offer? I've had their IPL at magic city brewfest.

I wasn't too impressed with any of their beers. The lager was one of my least favorite there.

There are some good breweries in Huntsville now. But I can't help you with lagers or pilsners.

I have to agree. It is really just the only lager I can think of. I don't drink too many lagers.

Blue Pants in Madison(right outside Huntsville) used to make a lager. They recently revamped their entire line though, and not sure if that one made the cut. I've never tried it.
Cahaba in Birmingham has a marzan, but it's only available in the fall. It is outstanding.
As mentioned Ghost Train makes an IPL. I didn't care for it when I tried it.
Goat Island Brewing in Cullman has a pilsner. Never tried it. They don't have a very big footprint yet. They also have a marzan style that was pretty good when I tried it. I think the marzan is only available in the fall.
That's all I can think of in the Birmingham or Huntsville markets. I'm not as well versed on the Huntsville breweries though.

Old Black Bear in Madison makes Cave City Lager, but I didn't really like it. But, like I said, I'm not really a fan of Lagers anyway.

Yeah they're not really popular in the craft beer world, and they're more difficult to brew than most ales. There's just not much creativity you can add to them.

Never tried any of the breweries in Huntsville.

Old Black Bear
Blue Pants
Salty Nut
Mad Malts
Yellowhammer
Rocket Republic
Green Bus
Below the Radar
I may be forgetting one of the smaller ones.

I actually hadn't had a quality lager or pilsner until I moved to Colorado. But in Denver and along the front range there are several breweries making world class lagers that pile up awards.
Bierstadt lagerhaus, Prost, and Wibby to name a few

It may also be regional. Even the regional powerhouses in the state have year-round pilsners or lagers in their lineups. Avery, New Belgium, Left Hand, and Oskar Blues.
Now I'm just trying to think of southeastern breweries in general that produce lagers. I know Highland in Asheville carries one or two year-round, but even that pocket of breweries there avoid them. Very interesting
The cave city lager is pretty dark, yeah?
Just going to make this a general discussion thread now because it's the off season. What's everyone drinking these days? Any new local or region beers that I should get my hands on?

I haven't really expanded on my beer drinking lately, but I tried the Monk at Band of Brothers brewery in T-Town. Nice Belgian Pale Ale.

Didn't seem very dark in my opinion, but maybe that's because I generally drink darker beers. It just tasted all.... lager-ie to me.

I just never have enjoyed a pilsner. Maybe I haven't tried the right one.

Southern Prohibition out of Hattiesburg has an ipa called Devils Harvest Breakfast IPA that is really good. I've been drinking quite a few of them lately.
Good people's hitchhiker ipa is a solid west coast style ipa that they've recently started canning.
Burial Beer out of Asheville is making its way further and further south, and I haven't had anything from them that I didn't like.
The best new brewery in the southeast though is Bearded Iris out of Nashville. They are churning out great juicy ne style IPAs. It seems like they can a new one every other week.

Lagunitas has a Czech style pilsner that is very good. That's about the only one I really remember drinking.
