However, they do have a chance to get on the field. Just gotta show consistency from last week to this week. If saban notices the effort and they're starting to be come consistent then they will be on the field. I expect one of the young receiver to step up in next few weeks.

Absolutely I think JoJo is showing that. He is getting on the field to say the least.

I don’t buy that the defensive struggles were simply a lack of player execution. Whose job is it to get them ready? Whose job is it to make adjustments on the sideline or at halftime to stuff they haven’t prepped for? Whose job is it to replace players who are clearly out of it and lost like Christian Harris and Hellams? Pete is the worst DC of the Saban era outside of the one year Tosh experiment. Dude is just lost.

Twisted explained it well in the defensive thread. He did say the coaches are to blame.

On D there is plenty of blame to go around.

The speed option issue is primarily a scheme flaw - that is on the coaches.

Shying away from contact - that is a #2 flaw. On the player and on the coaches for not getting someone else on the field in his place.

False step / miss reads with #8 - that is on #8 and PG for not seeing/fixing the issue. #8 does not have lots of years of experience that close to the action. It looks to me like he is reading the first step of the OG then reacting. His flaw is not being able to cleanly read thru the OG to the QB or near RB. That skill is learned with lots of time being in the middle of it. I went to UA as a FB/OLB (much like today's Jack LB). Back in the day it was a "flex end". After knee injuries FB was no longer and option. I had an NFL starter at the same position that was 3 years ahead of me and an NFL starter one year behind me. With the knee issue, I lost a couple of steps and speed/strength had been my game. They tried to move me to Mike LB. I was used to the action coming from one direction. Having never played in the middle, I could not adjust to reads and bodies coming at me from every direction - I know what #8 is dealing with and it is a huge adjustment to make from DB (in the back or on the edge) to being in the middle of the heat, spit, and snot.

DL #50 playing too high and not being consistent with assignments - that is all on the player. Huge potential but not yet ready for prime time.

No

I played LB back in the day. I also played some FB/TE/Nose man When they were trying to find a spot for me after an injury.

I feel like we need a Twisted Thread with breakdowns lol.

I did like #50 hustle on the 3rd down play. Although the RB made a good move he forced him outside.

#2 worries me

#8 I hope improves, truly.

2 is strange. His strength last year was his tackling. That’s how he beat out Wright mid year. Now he looks like Wright did last year with bad angles and arm whiffs. Heck, Battle doesn’t look like anything special either. Been a minute since we had an elite safety. Sort of strange. ILBs have been trash since Pete rolled into town. Ready for him to roll out. Bring Pruitt home.

Last year #2 did not know what he did not know. He played 1 position and played see the ball hit the ball.

This year he is playing multiple spots and thinking too much. Mullen used his "thinking too much" to slow his reactions down and beat him.

about game 8/9 the game should be slowing down for him more and he will hopefully get back to see the ball hit the ball because he is beginning to understand what he did not know.

I hope you’re right. I struggle to think 3rd year players are still struggling with fundamentals and assignments but I’ve never tried to learn a CFB scheme. He also had the ankle, so that may be screwing with his head a little too. Hopefully he can get it together because I promise you Lane will be cooking some stuff up for 2 and 8. If they can’t get it together I hope Saban overrides Pete and puts 14 and 42 in there.

#2 is now playing FS / SS / Dime, three different sets of assignments to know and execute. Mullen was moving him with formation shifts, he even ended up in what would be Star (nickle) because that is where Mullen wanted him.

That is a lot of information to juggle on the fly. Slows you down and plays with your confidence. When your body gets there before your mind does, bad things can happen.

Mullen sounds like a mastermind. Too bad we don’t have a DC who could counter with adjustments. Heck, you’d think Saban being a defense guy would make some adjustments himself if needed. Just a disappointing performance all the way around. Time to move on and hope for the best.
