The team being the best conditioned doesn't not automatically translate to our defensive line being the best conditioned or even being at their most explosive and effective size.
We have had many players take a step back and cut their size down the increase their playing speed, endurance and explosiveness on the field.
There is a reason why.

Yes, and so if those players did that and cut down (past tense) their size, why do you think the problem continues? Isn't this a problem of last year or 2 years ago?

Continuing its string of fall-camp guest speakers, Alabama welcomed former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to speak to the team before Thursday's practice.
Tyson will also be featured in a future episode of Bama Cuts where he sits down with Crimson Tide linebacker Dylan Moses, defensive lineman Raekwon Davis and tight end Miller Forristall. Bama Cuts is a popular video series produced by Alabama where current players chat with guest speakers in the barbershop located inside the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.
Tyson, who competed from 1985 to 2005, holds the record as the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title at 20 years, four months and 22 days old and won his first 19 professional fights by knockout or stoppage, including 12 of them in the first round. He won the WBC title in 1986 and added the WBA and IBF titles in 1987, becoming the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold all three titles and the only heavyweight fighter to successively unify them.
Tyson is not the first boxer to speak to the Crimson Tide football team. Current heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder, a Tuscaloosa native, spoke to the team last year. Other big-name athletes to serve as guest speakers during past preseason camps include Charles Barkley and Kobe Bryant.
Through the first week of camp, Rickey Smiley, Stephen A. Smith, Inky Johnson and Jay Bilas have also visited UA's campus and spoke to the players. Some of them will appear on Bama Cuts, too.
Thursday night will be Alabama's sixth practice of the preseason -- and fourth of the week.

Surge...anyone have access behind the pay way?... what up?
Edit: Update
From one of the boards...He's fine. Minor injury. Will miss a little practice, but he's a freak and will step right back into the first unit very shortly.Trust this. Saban will address at presser after Saturday's practice
— Freshman D.J. Dale was not present during the viewing period. Before practice started, The Tuscaloosa News reported that Dale was in a black, no-contact jersey and that Nick Saban would provide an update on his status following the team’s scrimmage Saturday.
— Defensive end LaBryan Ray (ankle) and defensive back Nigel Knott remained absent from practice. Ray and Dale have both spent time with the first-team defensive line.

2019 Fall Camp thread ~ Practice #6 edition
The team being the best conditioned doesn't not automatically translate to our defensive line being the best conditioned or even being at their most explosive and effective size.
We have had many players take a step back and cut their size down the increase their playing speed, endurance and explosiveness on the field.
There is a reason why.
Addressing the bolded portion, if this is true, then those players reduced their size in one of 2 contexts:
1) They mutinied against the instruction of the S&C and Nutrition program, and spoke about the mutiny publicly, or
2) They dropped weight at the instruction and in conjunction with the S&C and Nutrition teams.
Obviously, scenario 1 is ludicrous, and so it bears to reason that the S&C and Nutrition programs themselves were behind the dropping of weight at the time, and so what would lead a fan to believe that now those entities have forgotten those lessons and are now making Dlinemen too big again? It doesn't make sense.
Either those kids lost weight because S&C program adjusted, or it never adjusted and those kids never lost weight, or there was a temporary public mutiny - and we know the last 2 are not true - because they did lose the weight and mutiny is ludicrous. So why would a fan criticize the S&C program today for past problems that it obviously adjusted to?
Many might not be interested in this, and I get it, but we had quite an argument in another thread and I'm just trying to get a handle on the logic some are using. I hope no one takes offense. We're just talking Bama football here.

LINK ]Alabama practice report: First-team defensive lineman not practicing By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
Alabama had its first night practice of fall camp on Thursday.
Here are some notes from the media viewing period:
— Freshman defensive lineman DJ Dale, the Crimson Tide’s first-team nose tackle, wasn’t practicing.
— Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson spoke to the team before practice.
— Tight end Miller Forristall (foot) was back going through drills for the second straight day.
— Freshman quarterback Paul Tyson was working with the scout team. EDIT-OP's opinion follows:Everyone seems to be saying he needs a year to get used to the game speed, looks like a solid red-shirt year on the way
— Defensive lineman LaBryan Ray (ankle) and cornerback Nigel Knott (undisclosed medical situation) were again missing from practice.

Glad to see Forristal back and issue free for a couple practices in a row. In Spring, Todd Blackledge indicated that Sark said really good things about him in the passing game.

LINK ]Alabama holds night practice, has visit with Mike Tyson By Cecil Hurt -
August 8, 2019
The University of Alabama practiced under the lights on Thursday night and at least one highly-touted defensive player was absent.
Freshman DJ Dale, who was an early entry in the spring and had been working with the first defensive line in the absence of LaBryan Ray (foot injury), was not at the Thursday night practice, reportedly due to an injury suffered in Wednesday’s practice. In the absence of both on Thursday, Alabama coaches worked with a number of different players on the line including Tevita Musika, Stephon Wynn and freshmen Christian Barmore, Justin Eboigbe, Ishmael Sopsher, Byron Young (who appeared to get a good number of reps in the media viewing period) and, of course, senior All-America candidate Raekwon Davis.
Alabama coach Nick Saban is expected to update the media on all injuries following Saturday’s scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Alabama, which has had a heavyweight list of celebrity and motivational speakers address the team in the past two weeks, hosted perhaps the most recognizable of all as former world’s heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson flew to Tuscaloosa to speak to the team before Thursday’s practice.
“We had a good conversation with the kids,” Tyson said on a video released by Alabama’s athletic department on Thursday night. “It was really awesome.”
Tyson will also be featured in a future episode of “Bama Cuts,” where he sits down with Crimson Tide linebacker Dylan Moses, defensive lineman Davis and tight end Miller Forristall.
The former champion also had a sit-down session with Saban prior to practice.
Tyson, the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title, won his first 19 professional fights by knockout or stoppage, including 12 first round KO’s. He won the WBC title in 1986 and added the WBA and IBF titles in 1987, becoming the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold all three titles and the only heavyweight fighter to successively unify them.
Alabama has had other boxers speak into the team, notably reigning WBC champion Deontay Wilder, a Tuscaloosa native and noted Crimson Tide fan.
Among the other speakers this month have been ESPN personalities Stephen A. Smith and Jay Bilas, as well as former Tennessee star Inky Johnson.
