Wimp was the one who should have been given a longer leash.
Ala fans were getting upset with Wimp because he couldn't get us past the sweet 16. But, Finebum got him fired.
Mark was being judged based on what Wimp had accomplished. He couldnt match Wimp, and then he couldnt keep his pants zipped up. The ncaa has the goods on Mark, so I wouldnt lose any sleep over what he has accomplished--on or off the court.

How did Finebaum get Wimp fired? Wimp got Wimp fired by sleeping with his secretary then having an argument with her at the office and using his pimp hand. She sued the university. They had no choice but to cut him loose.

So it looked like it was unsalvageable at that point and we needed to move on.

Yes, it was bad for everyone. The players weren’t happy, the fans weren’t happy, Gottfried was screwing coeds on the golf course. If you go back even further, Gerald Wallace hates Gottfried’s guts.

That’s just some of it. Hell his wife was fighting Finebaum in the stands during a game, it was just a train wreck towards the end

Goodman may end up being wrong but what he's probably going by is that Bama is absolutely loaded with NBA prospects. If Petty comes back it improves our chances for a very special season.Of course we gotta have better luck with injuries & continue to cut down on turnovers.

Correct

I will fully admit I got very frustrated that we didn't advance further during the 5 straight NCAA Tournament appearances......however I would take that era back in a heartbeat now. And I'd probably end up complaining about underachieving in the tournament, too, but that is just kind of how it goes.

I can tell you that the way Gottfried's teams played and the underachievement certainly planted seeds in fan's minds for wanting something new, but very few wanted him fired until 2008 or 2009.

The 2006 team was very talented and maddingly underachieving. They were 7-6 early on and 11-8 at the end of January. However, they played well down the stretch - hammered Tennessee at home, beat Florida at home (who would soon with their 2nd straight national title) and took UCLA to the brink in the 2nd round (who eventually lost in the title game to Florida). The back to back weekend games at home vs Tennessee (who won the SEC) and Florida (who won their 2nd national title) were as fun a 8 day stretch as I had in college. Those games were ROWDY.

Then the 2007 team had a decent record, but they had a modern era Alabama collapse down the stretch including a brutal home loss to Auburn.

The 2008 and 2009 teams were just bad.

I wish that I could have seen it. I heard it was quite the performance by Mrs. Gottfried

I think it was before the Kentucky game in 2007? I could be wrong, but I feel like it was a big game on a weekend.

He shouldn’t hate Gottfried IMO. I played HS ball with Gerald and I know where he lived and what his Mama drove before he went to Bama and where they lived and what his Mama drove after he went to Bama....Gottfried payed him well. I know that for a FACT

Gottfried was well on his way to missing the tournament for a 3rd consecutive year when he was fired, so I don't understand why you keep repeating the half truth that he was fired after missing it twice. It's not like he was canned at the end of the 2008 season. They gave him a shot to turn it around and nothing changed. I also don't understand why you seem to have such a soft spot for a terrible basketball coach who is also kind of a scumbag, even though by your own admission you were so young when he was coaching that you didn't really have much of an interest at the time. I honestly don't think you could find a single Alabama basketball fan old enough to actually remember our program under Gottfried who would go back and keep him even in light of the fact that we have been the epitome of mediocrity since he left.

There is zero doubt that Gottfried played the hell out of the game (and I don't blame him one bit). We had some EPIC bidding wars with StansFIELD for Missabama kids (kids in the area between Jackson and Birmingham).

It was a frickin madhouse. That first Pearl team at Tennessee was 19-3 when they came in and we beat them like a rented mule.

And then the Sunday game against Florida it was like the place just picked up where it left off.

I'd pay money to see Mrs. Gottfried and Mrs. Marshall get loaded and fight each other. It would be like the Frazier v. Ali of lunatic basketball coach wives.

Gottfried had to go because I remember it seemed the last few yrs he didn't have that fire during the games & that trickled down to the players. TR Dunn & few other coaches moving on hurt his teams from a strategic standpoint. Road games were pretty much automatic losses. Had he stayed the NCAA troubles at NC State would probably be here.Oats coaches & recruits so much harder than him.

It's really a shame that Will Wade was like 16 back then. I don't think John Brady was clean, but can you imagine Gottfried, Stansbury, and Wade all fighting for the same recruits? One of them would end up with his own fricking private jet and a Bentley.

I was trying to find highlights of some of those 2006 games and the first thing that popped up was that trip to Notre Dame.

I vividly remember a group of us going to Buffalo Wild Wings (don't judge, it was brand new) to watch it. Notre Dame wasn't even very good and they scored like 102 points and shot wide open 3s the entire game. The most typical Alabama road performance ever.

Me and buddies also went to the fraternity BEAT AUBURN party the night of the Memphis game in that same season and basically snuck in liquor and drank heavily the whole game. It was Calipari's first really good Memphis team. Preseason NIT maybe? Then two days later we went to Mike Shula's last game as Alabama head football coach.

Ah, the good ole days.

It really is.

I miss the old State/Bama games like crazy. That was a legit, hateful rivalry between two programs that were both good, all the kids knew each other, the coaches hated eachother and the games were physical and loud as hell.

Those last few yrs of Gottfried frustrated the hell outta me with the piss poor defense we'd play. Wide open 3's to opposing teams especially on the road.I'd think damn during a timeout can you not make the defensive adjustment of having your players play tighter defense. Wimp once said on the road in the SEC we played zone defense the 1st half to stay out of foul trouble then the 2nd half we played more man. That plan worked out a lot.
