Avery is going to make Pearl quit like Saban did with Fat Phil and Tuberville.

Avery Johnson Jr.'s AAU coach on if CAJ will be able to recruit
quote:
When he walks in the gym, he'll have everybody's attention. The University of Alabama got itself a five-star general."
quote:
"He's been around the elite basketball players in the country with his son," Pospichal said. "Wherever Avery Johnson goes, all the best players on the other teams are like, 'That's Avery Johnson. Hey, coach. Hey, coach.' "What do these kids want? They want to play in college, and they want to go to the NBA. What kid doesn't want to be coached by an NBA coach?"
quote:
Pospichal said Johnson would attend Titan practices and "we'd go over things. My guys loved him. The parents loved him. He's a charismatic guy. He has a good way of making people feel important."
quote:
Understand that I love Anthony Grant, but Avery has a different personality," Pospichal said. "He'll be so strong for the Alabama community and the Alabama brand."

I'm officially stoked about Bama BB again. I love to say that I've checked this thread more than I've checked the "cruitin" and spring practice threads this week.
I wish the season started next weekend!

That's funny, because the rant sas that he is a shitty coach that won't know how to recruit and relate to these young men

You're talking about some of the dumbest people that post on message boards.

Really loving his first 36 hours as our coach.
Let's do it Avery.

Avery Johnson has been giving motivational speeches to middle and high school kids, a program called "Just say Yes". This should help him in recruiting. LINK
I just hope the University puts someone with him to make sure he understands the NCAA rules.

Do y'all think he's referring to Ingram or someone like Josh Langford?
Bird, me, or someone else needs to start a recruiting thread pretty soon it looks like.

Shannon Terry explaining why Alabama hoops recruiting news has been sparse on 247. Looks like that will be changing, but I thought it was interesting how Grant pretty much shut out the media:
quote:
I've seen a few threads asking about BOL's planned coverage for hoops. I'm in Los Angeles this week and haven't been able to jump on the board.
The bottom line is the BOL will absolutely increase our efforts in hoops and hoops recruiting coverage. During the Mark Gottfried days and before, we aggressively covered hoops and hoops recruiting. We pulled back because it was like pulling teeth during the Grant regime. Early on, we would get consistent requests to pull down recruiting stories that were actually -- in some cases -- all over the internet. It just wasn't a media friendly regime and combine that with fan apathy toward hoops and one of the greatest runs in Alabama football and recruiting, we naturally placed additional resources toward football.
We will bring back more hoops coverage, scoop and insight. We are all monster basketball fans so it will be a natural evolution for us. Hope this explains our position.

Yeah I remember when Ostendorf worked for tidesports, Grant and one of the assistants ripped him about writing an article about Willy Kouassi because they thought it would scare Moussa Gueye away. Most staffs leak who they are recruiting to the writers so that stories can be written and it's another way for the staff to gauge how much interest the prospect actually has in us.

@Marq_Burnett
Reggie Witherspoon, who was an assistant coach on Anthony Grant's staff last year, is here for Avery Johnson's press conference.
I don't know if this means that Johnson is considering Witherspoon, but having a guy who has been a head coach before on staff wouldn't be a bad idea.

If we keep Witherspoon, I would like for our last assistant to be a defensive guy.
Or maybe Reggie will be the basketball operations guy.

If we kept him, I'd love for our next guy to be a pure recruiter. If we can get talent here, hopefully Johnson and one assistant can do the coaching.
