No. 10 Alabama Gymnastics Set to Compete in Evening Session of 2023 SEC Championships

The evening session features four teams ranked in the nation’s top 10

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 10 Alabama gymnastics team will compete in the 2023 SEC Championships on Saturday in Gas South Arena in Duluth, Ga. The meet will be broadcast live on SEC Network at 7 p.m. CT.

The SEC Championship meet is divided into two sessions, with the top four teams competing in the evening session while the other four squads square off in the afternoon session. All eight of the competing teams are ranked in the nation's top 20, with four teams inside the top 10 in the Crimson Tide's session. Along with the Tide, the night session also includes No. 3 Florida, No. 6 LSU and No. 8 Kentucky, while No. 12 Auburn, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 17 Missouri and No. 18 Georgia will compete in the afternoon session at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Alabama won the SEC Championship title in 2021 and finished runner-up to the Florida Gators in 2022. The Tide's roster features three individual SEC champions, with Luisa Blanco (all-around, vault, uneven bars and balance beam), Makarri Doggette (uneven bars) and Shania Adams (uneven bars) all winning event titles at the 2021 contest.

The Crimson Tide (7-5, 4-4) will start out the competition on the balance beam, rotating to the floor exercise and the vault before closing out the night on the uneven bars. Top-seeded Florida will start on the vault, LSU on the uneven bars and Kentucky on the floor exercise.

Head Coach Ashley Johnston said
"I'm really looking forward to the SEC Championships this weekend. The opportunity to compete for a championship against some of the top teams in the country is what this team has been preparing for all season. The team came into practice Monday with their game faces on, and everyone is ready to go and dialed in. The evening session features four of the top 10 teams in the country competing on the floor at the same time, and we're excited and fired up to put all of our hard work together and have a great night this Saturday."

No. 10 Alabama Gymnastics Finishes Second at 2023 SEC Championships

Freshman Gabby Gladieux earned an individual SEC title on the vault

The No. 10 Alabama gymnastics team finished in second place at the 2023 SEC Championships, tying its second-best score of the season with a 197.925.

Alabama earned a 49.375 on balance beam to start off the meet, led by a 9.950 from Luisa Blanco. The Crimson Tide posted its highest rotation score of the night on floor exercise, a 49.550, to move into second place behind the top-seeded Florida Gators at the halfway point. Alabama maintained its position with a 49.525 on the vault, tying UA's season-best on the event, before closing out the night with a 49.400 on the uneven bars.

Freshman Gabby Gladieux earned the SEC title on the vault in a four-way tie, marking her first vault event title of the season. Gladieux scored a 9.950 in the leadoff position, earning a perfect score for her Yurchenko full, which has a start value of 9.950.

The Crimson Tide came into the championship as the No. 4 seed in the conference and No. 10 nationally, defeating No. 6 LSU (197.800), No. 8 Kentucky (197.675), No. 12 Auburn (197.100), No. 17 Missouri (197.000), No. 16 Arkansas (196.825) and No. 18 Georgia (196.600). The No. 3 Florida Gators took home the title with a 198.425.

Head Coach Ashley Johnston said
"We had a lot to celebrate tonight. We finished second out of eight teams in the best conference in the country, and all eight of the teams are ranked in the top 20 nationally. Gabby winning the vault title is a huge deal, especially as a freshman. It was really special that she did it with a Yurchenko full. We've been going back-and-forth on whether or not she would compete that vault or a Yurchenko 1.5, and she bought into the process of committing to the details and it was great to see that pay off. That was really the theme of tonight. Every single athlete committed to owning their process and doing the little things to collectively help big performances come together. I'm really proud of how they competed tonight, and how they handled adversity and stayed together. I believe the best is still to come for this team."

UF scored .5 better than the second place team. That is a Yuge margin. I think LSU coming in third was the biggest shocker. But a great second place for Bama. I think it will take 198.4 to win it all this year. Bama probably wont make the finals which only takes 8 teams. They would have to put up at least 198 to make it their. Good luck
