I completely admit that I am not as bullish as most when it comes to relying on FR talent. On top of that, I think Taylor/Bola's contributions inside were criminally underrated.

Bola, yes. He was a monster at rebounding. We will miss that a lot. But one reason he had so many rebounds is bc we had a ton of missed shots. Hopefully that'll improve a little this year. Jimmie was a hard worker and an all around decent player, but I fully expect Giddens to be able to do at least as much as Taylor did. Giddens will be a lot more physical as well.

So here is my argument why I'm not sold on the "just replace with Giddens" idea. I def agree that in theory Giddens' positives should offset (or even better than) the lost benefits of Bola/JT but...
Giddens is a foul machine. He had 4+ fouls in about 66% of games despite avg <20 min per game. That was in the Big10 and not w/ whistle happy SEC refs. Add to that Hall who also at times has issues with foul trouble
I've felt that a huge reason for your #19 opponent 2FG% was due to your bigman defense inside rim/post defending. That typically was when you had 2/3 of Hall/Taylor/Bola onthe court

Hopefully Galin smith will help us inside as well. He's got a lot of work to do obviously, but maybe having him will help us if for some reason he does get in foul trouble

The success ya'll had last year was by grinding it out Wisconsin/UVA style with your defense, rebounding and the occasional Norris shot that didn't hit back rim. If Giddens doesn't fix the foul trouble and you need quality D min from a project FR post player, you are trying to put a small bandaid on a bullet wound victim
Ingram + Norris at 2 + Key at 3 + 2 bigs made the all hustle lineup that killed opponents. They couldn't score on that size without 3s and you got all the rebounds.
It wasn't a "pretty" lineup but criminally underrated in hwo effective it was

But like I said, I don't expect airballs and bricks 70% of the time this year like we did last year so maybe they won't have to be great inside, just be decent. Sexton and Petty are freshmen but that doesn't stop them from being great shooters. Last year Corban Collins missed like 20 threes in a row at one point and most of them didn't hit the rim. Bola had no offensive game at all. Hale didn't care and was suspended. Austin was hurt and didn't play. King was sick and didn't play. Our problem last year was having guys who could shoot and that should improve.

I mean this is where the "difference of opinion" comes in
I agree that Sexton/Petty and Giddens will improve the offense. Just my argument's foundation is about relying on FR for this huge improvement + just how much marginal improvement when you factor in the lost hustle/defense aspect
BTW, when did Petty lose his 5th star on 247?

And when they see Alabama getting preseason love from the polls (whether we're gonna be good or not), it kills them

quote:yeah we lose the hustle/defense from Taylor and Bola, but I'm not gonna sit here and assume Giddens and Smith are gonna come in with no hustle or defense lol. Giddens has been practicing with the team for a year now so he's already had time to learn and get better. Galin will come in and have work to do but should provide something, whether it be scoring (which he was pretty good at in high school) or rebounding (which he's also pretty good at, even though it was just high school). Hall also should improve.

I'm operating under the Giddens Will be in foul trouble. Plus the extra minutes for Hall/Giddens will mean more fouls less fresh too. You need a 3rd guy to rotate but it comes at a huge cost
It isn't just the hustle for Smith as much as post defense technique, understanding college level rim protection, recognizing when to backside help and how to switch
Those are things a HS kid just doesn't understand right away
ETA: I would know, when Horace Spencer got injured our defense did our best matador impression with Wiley/McElmore. They'd make plays but consistently had blown assignments on D

They view themselves as SEC #2 based on history (which is legit) but absolutely no one is willing to indulge them on that
It is hilarious

Ok we also have 6'10 Alex Reese, but I don't say that with any enthusiasm bc he had ZERO rebounds in the all star game
but it WAS just an all star game. He had a great senior year

This is off topic but:
The Lawson brothers are transferring from Memphis. That's a huge loss for them (Alabama plays Memphis, likely in game 1, this coming year). Will be a huge pickup for whoever gets them. Adam Zagoria posted this on twitter:
In other transfer news, looks like Noah Dickerson is probably not an option for us anymore

I just don't buy FR big men being good team defenders. Not with 99% of their games being dominant on pure ability not technique and the 1% of games being AAU defense optional games

I wouldn't take anything Zagario says as Bible
He had his Mustapha Heron tweet about transferring that as of right now is complete bullshite. Got that from a super trustworthy source.

This is why as an athletic department you shouldn't hire a player's family member just to land a recruit. Pastner hired their dad. When Tubby took over, he didn't even fire the dad, but he did demote him to director of player development. The Lawson brothers have been ready to leave since then.
Now Memphis is left with scrambling before next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up at GT with Pastner. If they're a package deal, I don't think we get them because I think we want someone eligible immediately and don't want to lose two future roster spots.
