Finally, a bracketologist says Alabama is worthy of an NCAA tournament bid

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Kentucky is out. Ole Miss is out.

Alabama is in.

That's the latest NCAA tournament projection from USA Today's bracketologist.

Patrick Stevens now rates the Crimson Tide (18-8. 10-3 SEC) as one of the "last four in" teams, along with Saint Mary's, Baylor and Villanova.

In new projections that Stevens posted Thursday, Alabama is the only new addition to the field. Ole Miss was dropped from the projected field. The Rebels suffered their fifth loss in their past seven games Wednesday, falling 63-62 at South Carolina. The Gamecocks came into the game tied with Mississippi State for last place in the Southeastern Conference.

Alabama defeated Mississippi State 64-56 Wednesday.

Stevens projects only three SEC teams in the NCAA tournament: Florida, Missouri and Alabama. Kentucky and Ole Miss are listed among the "first four out," along with Arizona State and Virginia.

Stevens has Alabama meeting Saint Mary's in a first-round game at Dayton, Ohio, that would be a battle for the No. 11 seed in the East Regional. The winner would meet sixth-seeded Minnesota in Lexington, Ky.

@KevinScarbinsky
Fun fact: Anthony Grant now has 3 winning SEC records in 4 years at Alabama. Mark Gottfried had 3 in 11 years.

How the hell did we make it to the dance under Gottfried? We always went 7-9 or 8-8.

Bama was always on the bubble it seemed. I remember when Bama made it to no.1 and thinking that well at least I don't have to sweat another selection show, I was wrong.

SEC had much better teams then obviously which helps with RPI. Mark also learned a lesson early on and to his credit adjusted favorably. He tried not to schedule any really bad teams OOC. Teams in the 200+ range and especially not 300+. Those negate the good wins in the RPI. Mark's teams also did really well at home, especially OOC.

All of Mark's tourney teams(5, I think) had at least one play maker and usually more than one. Also had NBA talent on almost all of his teams, even the non-tourney teams. How many future NBA players has Grant recruited?

The SEC was actually a quality league when Gottfried was in charge.

Yep. We always had at least one guy who was going to put up points every night and be a stud when he gave effort. We haven't had that with Grant.

Which is why I'm not too impressed with it. All I care about is making the big dance.

MG had a 500 record in SEC play in his 11 years. That spells average and I am glad he is gone. IF AG is 500 in sec play then I would say boot him too, but he is winning more SEC games but it is so ugly. Will his teams look different if he has a decent post man

We looked the same with JaMychal and he was a good player as much as most of us disliked him. I think our offensive philosophy just needs to be revamped. We look so much better and have so many more scoring opportunities when we play fast. It's just that we don't play fast for long spurts.

It was a decent league (certainly better than now), but it was a far cry from the SEC of the days of Wimp/Hobbs.

Gottfried got in partly because his teams started overrated every single year and he won enough to stay on the bubble.

It can when your coach preaches stall ball and a run out the clock mentality. Grant is a darker version of Rick Stansbury who doesn't cheat. So not only is he a shite coach with mentally weak teams, he can't even bring in top talent because he won't pay for it.

We didn't really play near as much stall ball today, though. We just had an absolute mental collapse at the end of regulation, and you can't have that playing on the road in the SEC.

So now they'd have to do the impossible and beat Florida and every other game to make the tourney, right?

That's irrelevant. I'm talking about the mentality that surrounds the team. You can see it. They don't know how to play with a big lead, regardless of how much time is left. You can watch them and tell that they go into "hold on to the lead" mode instead of "go win the game" mode.

There are two scenarios that put us in as an at large this point.

1) Win out in the regular season

2) Win out in the regular season with the exception of UF and make it to the SECTCG
