That's what I was afraid of
When you only have 10 scholly players to start with, these are the type of things that can't happen

I knew this shite would happen. If we could afford an injury it would be at guard not on of our three posts. Cooper is going to have to play some 4 now, and Pollard is going to have to pretend this isn't his freshman year.

What will the line be Sat @ VCU?
Even?
Even?

Yep. We were discussing this on the SECr yesterday and I was called crazy for being afraid that a situation could arise where we would have 5 or 6 4/5* players plus a bunch of walk ons. Well, right now we are down to 8 scholarship players. This is what happens when you aim for the stars, strike out, and don't have any kind of backup plan. Grant's recruitment of post players has been nothing short of a disastrous.

Yep. Our worst fear coming into the season has happened. Unfortunately, poor roster management creates these type situations. I hate to harp on this but it's inexcusable to go into a season with 3 post players. Now we are down to 2

I'd say VCU by at least 3.5. I'm going to bet on us though no matter what

Only that one idiot disagreed with that situation. I'm glad he doesn't post on this board.

Yep. Our staff just needs to reevaluate their recruiting strategy and go after different prospects in the spring and going forward with the next few classes. If you can land the role players in a class, then it makes sense to go after a few stars and hope you land one. You can't base your whole class on landing stars though. It just won't work out more often than not.

I'm a fan and all but money is money.
VCU by 3.5 huh? I see it more close to even, maybe even Ala -1.5/2
We really need a win on Sat. It would be HUGE.

I agree, some could argue that we should've beaten Cincy, and against Dayton we just got outplayed. They made their shots. Beating VCU proves we're legit, and if we can beat one of Mizzou/UF it proves we're definitely contenders heading into the SEC Tourney.
I know Engstrom is out for the season, but what about Moussa?

My max bets are like 10 bucks. I typically bet 2 or 3 a game. I'm not in it to really make a big profit. It's more just for fun and to have interest in games I'd otherwise not care about.

Agreed. Their guards are really good though so it'll be tough. I can see them turning us over a ton and making it even harder for us to get off shots just like Cincy did.

Such a pivotal game. I'm ready for Lacey to get it going again.
is Texas Tech any good?
What's the deal with the Jacobs? is it just me or does he always look tired...or like he doesn't want to be there? Doesn't seem like he's improved since he arrived. Nothing would make me happier than for him to become a force.

He shows up on the SECr once a week, spews a bunch of ridiculous homer bullshite that makes the rest of us look bad, and disappears. Hopefully it never gets worse than that.

Definitely. If you can bring in a couple of top ~75 type players to go along with a couple of role player types, that's a good class for a program like ours. We seem to focus on going for a class of 4 top ~50 type players and then when we only get 1 of them we are left with our pants down and a couple of scholarships slots go empty. There is nothing wrong with going after those kind of kids. It's the only way you are ever going to get any of them after all. But you have to have a backup plan, and we don't seem to be doing that right now. For example, it was unforgivable to let Powell end up at Memphis if we really did pull Barber's offer. And like you said yesterday...if State had kept Stans for one more year we wouldn't have signed a single kid last year. Not one.

In Grant's defense we could afford to go for stars last year's class with only one maybe two foreseeable available spots last year. Its hard to account for transfers of which we had 2 last year. Recruitment of post players has been a problem though. Still pissed about Willie Cauley.

No. If we lose that game, it'll be epic meltdown time.

He does seem to still be out of shape. He can only go a few minutes without huffing and puffing and not running up and down the court. I was also told from a guy out of Georgia that there are rumors that Jacobs isn't happy at Alabama. Now it's just a rumor and I wouldn't put much stock in it, but it's something to think about. If Jacobs wasn't happy with his PT, he'll be happy now cause he's going to be playing a ton of minutes for the rest of the season.

But he still knew we needed post players and didn't really address that need. He missed on Ware at MSU and Cauley at UK. Did we even recruit many more big men? It seemed like we went after guards and wings again.

I kind of get the impression that he ultimately wants to run an offense where you have 4 guard/wing types who are 6'3"-6'7" and one forward who can run the floor. But when we have that kind of personnel on the court, we slow the game down and play to the disadvantages of a smaller lineup.

Which all goes back to our offensive and defensive philosophies not meshing. If we are going to press and play a high risk, high reward defense, we need to run and go fast when we are on offense. If we want to play slow offensively, we need to back away from the press and make sure not to give up any easy buckets defensively.

This is what he has been after all along, hence all the 7 footers and lengthy big men he has gone after.
I understand the frustration with missing on some of the higher ranked recruits, but I don't think we should completely stop recruiting the stars. If you think about it, we were two bad breaks from being a national championship contender the next two years. If UK doesn't miss on their top targets last year, we get Cauley, no doubt and if Barber doesn't pull his thuggery i think we would have landed him as well which in turn could have landed JJ who said the biggest determining factor for him was Marquette's highly ranked class. If we truly want to be national championship contenders and get over this hump we have to continue to recruit these guys and hope they fall our way. I love Grant, but I don't think he is the kind of coach that can be a true contender without some top-notch talent. He doesn't have the offensives mind for it.

Btw I also think we need to recruit a few fillers as well, but I wouldn't completely abandon the top 50 or 25 players.

I don't think any of us want us to stop recruiting the top players, but maybe pick out a couple and go after them. Don't only recruit the stars. I don't want us to pass up on a guy like William Lee next year trying to go after the more heralded big men and end up not getting him. That's why I'd settle for taking Riley Norris instead of trying to recruit some stud wing. When we get the role guys committed, that's when you go even harder after the stars. But when you recruit the stars first and miss, the fall back options aren't always there as we've seen last year and this year.
