From personal experience: When the alarm sounds, get out. Quickly. Don't wait around to find out if it's a false alarm. You can learn if it's real or not when you're out on the sidewalk.

And take your keys with you. I’ve seen a building evacuate and everyone thought it was a drill so they left their personal belongings behind. Turned out it wasn’t a drill and first responders wouldn’t let people back in the building for several days. Lots of people were stranded without house or car keys, purses, etc.
