Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but wouldn't that cause a team to negotiate to pay less money to the player?

I believe the ploy is designed for the team to know the injury is being faked. A real injury might diminish value but a fake injury heals quickly when dollars are tossed at it.

It sure seems like they have some evidence of it, so why not just cut the head of the snake off and make the rest of them fall in line? Most likely because they found a widespread abuse of the practice and the disruption would be major for the league if they did more than just send a warning.
