A proposal to ban tackle football for players under the age of 12 has been removed from the California legislature this week. According to a report from POLITICO, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the proposal that became a culture-war talking point - in an election year...
quote:

“I am deeply concerned about the health and safety of our young athletes, but an outright ban is not the answer,” he said. “My administration will work with the Legislature and the bill’s author to strengthen safety in youth football — while ensuring parents have the freedom to decide which sports are most appropriate for their children.”

CTE is a thing. We're learning more about it. Reducing repetitive microtrauma to kids before puberty will probably improve players' health long term. You could argue that would preserve the sport in the long run, if you have better long term health outcomes. There's plenty to rant about culture wise but this is hardly the hill to die on.

You have to think modern equipment is much safer for kids now than when we were cracking skulls.

Totally agree. But a ban isn’t the answer. Education.
