If Sean Payton decides he wants to coach next season, the Saints will need to work out a trade. So, what can they get in return for him? NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated answered that question in his latest mailbag...
quote:

A great head coach is almost always worth more than a first-round pick, with the exception being that the first-round pick is a franchise quarterback. (If, for example, I was running the Jaguars in 2021, I wouldn’t have traded the first pick for any coach, since Trevor Lawrence was there.) So the chances someone thinks Payton is worth a first-rounder? In the new NFL, where first-rounders aren’t valued like they used to be? Pretty good, I’d say.
Does he come back?

Or Payton waits 2 years and doesn't deprive the team he will be coaching of any valuable assets, right?

That’s not how this works. The Saints own his rights in perpetuity. He cannot waitout his contract. If he decides to coach again in 30 years, it will still take a trade to get him

Zzyzx: You're wrong:

"Sean Payton is under contract through 2024 with the #Saints. If another team wanted to swoop it, they would need to compensate New Orleans. But that’s a conversation for next offseason."

The fact he thinks Trevor Lawrence is more valuable than Sean Payton proves to me he knows nothing.

That and the Saints will get more than a 1st rounder
