They have the right to make money. They also have the right not to join the NCAA, knowing in advance what its rules are.

You don't join the NCAA. You join the Athletic Department, they in return PAY the school 100% of your tuition. If a non profit AD is allowed to write a check in your name to the school, why can't a car dealership write you a check for an appearance. The NCAA became irrelevant as soon as the AD's all became separate non-profits and started paying the schools to enroll their players.

You are splitting hairs and making an irrelevant point. Anyone that joins an NCAA institution does so knowing in advance what the rules are. They can choose to not do so and pursue their athletic endeavors elsewhere. The truth is, outside of a small handful of players, college athletes have no market value and are worth considerably less to the school than the cost of their tuition. Are you for getting rid of scholarships, and letting the players pay their own way via market value? This would be a net loss for 99 percent of college athletes.

You are much more likely to see a Duke basketball player wearing Nike on any given night during CBB season than you are an Oregon player. Duke is a Nike school and they want the most visible players in Nike.

Most likely Williamson was NOT going to go to Oregon clear across the country to play CBB. He was going to a blue-blood. Duke is as much a Nike program as Oregon is.
