According to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, the emerging “favored outcome” for the group of administrators is a 12-team playoff. I normally hate the idea of more playoff spots since it inevitably devalues the regular season, but I actually think you could add to the playoff without devaluing the regular season. It would be a 6 team playoff. All 5 power 5 conference champs plus an at large. The 1 and 2 seeds get a bye, 3 and 6 play each other, 4 and 5. Winner of those games advance to play the 1 and 2 seed, and then on to NC. This still places value on strength of schedule, winning every game, etc, while still adding spots to the playoff.

Does this really matter? Do any of us really think that Alabama and maybe in some years Clemson, Ohio State and every once in a blue moon and LSU, Oklahoma, etc won't be the national champion every year anyway? This isn't about making the field more competitive. If they wanted to do that they would do something about recruiting. That's where the imbalance lies and why it's always those teams above that I mentioned. This is and always has been about money from the TV contracts.

12 is too many. 8 is perfect. Only increases the playoff by one week.

The current model works. It forces teams, especially those in weak conferences, to seek better intersectional games. Weaken that, and there is no incentive for teams not to load the schedule with powder puffs.

I like the move to 8 and shorten the regular season back to 11 games. As it currently stands, the conference championship games have become a joke, and can actually be a punishment instead of a reward in certain circumstances. That should NEVER be the case. In virtually every sport, conference/division champs auto-qualify for the playoffs. But for whatever reason, that idea is anathema in college football. I don't care about conference strength. If you're the champion of a P5 conference, you deserve to be in the mix.

I’ve always been a fan of the 8-team model with 5 auto-berths for the P5 champs + 3 at-large berths. 12 is an unecessarily large field. And we already have enough BS politics in college football. I don’t want some committee deciding whoich teams get to a bue based on subjective “eyeball tests.”

In my opinion I don't think a #1 seed playing a #12 seed will be very entertaining football game for a CFP game.

There wouldn't be a #1 vs. #12. If it's 12 teams, then byes have to be involved. I would assume #1-#4 get byes and then #5-#12 play each other to narrow down the field to 8. But there won't be any way to have objective criteria for those byes. It will have to be done by committee, and certain teams (Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame) will always get the benefit of the doubt. An 8 team playoff with the P5 champs getting auto-berths would make the conference championship games exciting and relevant again. It also ensures that any sort of committee wouldn't have too much control. They can seed them however they want, but I don't want them deciding which teams get first-round byes.

frick it 64 team single elimination starting in august. frick the ncaa and all this bullshite. College football should never have a playoff and since they do it shouldn’t expand past where it’s at now
