In an interview with The Athletic's Richard Deitsch, the ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy proposed some drastic alterations to speed up NBA games...
quote:

"I don’t think you want to take away free throws in the last four minutes of a game, but let’s speed it up," Van Gundy said. "The only person that likes free throws is a play-by-play announcer because they can wax poetically about some story. It’s the extra point of the NBA. It serves no rational, reasonable purpose."

Do people really not realize he’s a sarcastic troll at this point? He’s great at it.

That’s why he’s on TV and no longer coaching

I would keep FTs but reduce the time to take one from 10 seconds to 5 and put it on the shot clock.

Not any more radical than starting a runner on 2nd base in extra innings or not allowing WRs and QBs to get touched by defenders

Dumb idea. Although that would prevent hack a Shaq on bad FT shooters. FT are a huge part of the game and potential point total.
I do agree with him on speed that crap up.

Great ideas Jeff. Let’s also get rid of the three point line and just award 3 points for all shots that are “all net”.
