SEC Network Analyst Reveals Convo With Brian Kelly About Spending In The Transfer Portal

SEC Network analyst Jordan Rodgers was on the call Saturday night for LSU's 24-17 win over Vanderbilt and shared a conversation that he had with Brian Kelly on Friday about his plan to spend big money to build next year's roster. Per SI.com:

“The amount of money that Bryce Underwood was commanding was unreal,” Rodgers said, “You take that off the books a little bit, now you can figure out how you want to build this roster around, hopefully, a quarterback that wants to come back in Garrett Nussmeier.”

For Hart, he dove into a conversation he had with Kelly leading up to kickoff in Baton Rouge with the shot-caller for LSU providing a "promise" to the program.

“I had that conversation with Brian Kelly at the facility yesterday, ‘He said, listen, we lose the kid and he ends up at Michigan and it is what it is, but now all of sudden the financial freedom we have to spend on guys that would get a little bit more, to lure more.

“He said ‘I promise, we’re going to take that to another level’,” Hart said.

Look, the simple fact is that 5 star QBs, hardly ever win Nattys. The vast majority of titles are won with either 3 or 4 star QB. You win titles at the lines of scrimmage, period. Go get those.

He used terms like "hardly ever win Nattys" and "vast majority" when it's just not true. The sample size is in favor of getting a 5* and it's not particularly close, either. Y'all are comparing apples to Legos. It's not a 1:1 comparison (i.e: 5* vs 4* vs 3*) since there are only ever one to three 5* QBs whereas there will be 15+ of the 4* variety and 50 of the 3*.

Even if Underwood is a success his NIL will be a huge drain on Michigan.

Imagine all the unspoken jealousy/angst there will be amongst his teammates in the locker room.
The second something goes awry with him in college, there will be a LOT of people throwing that dollar figure in his face. He said all the right and mature things during his recruitment.
Obviously, he's free to do whatever (and HOWever) he wants with his recruitment, but I sure hope he's now made himself free to deal with intense criticism going forward.

I will say this....people predicted this type of angst with A&M's "best class ever" and the attrition/locker room issues from that signing class are now public and well-documented.

Been saying this from the beginning, this was the plan, we they decided to turn down Underwood. For every action, there is a reaction. Blessing in disguise is Kelly understands he has to open up the checkbook for his entire roster

I don’t think Brian Kelly “learned” anything. He’s saying that we don’t have to pay Underwood so that frees up money to spend on other guys now.

That is exactly what LSU should have done. NO ONE is worth $10+ million over his college career...especially not a guy who hasn't thrown 1 college pass.
