Terrible news in the horse racing world on Sunday after 3 jockeys were hospitalized and 2 horses died in a horrific fall during a horserace in Hong Kong...
quote:

The tragic event happened during the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin Racecourse ... when jockey Lyle Hewitson's horse lost its footing several hundred yards into the race, collapsing ahead of a large pack of horses.

The whole incident was televised ... and the video clearly shows Hewiston's horse, Amazing Star fall, sending the South African jockey slamming to the ground, before being trampled by a stampede of horses.

Can anyone explain why they kill the horse instead of surgery, rehab, etc? Maybe it’s just the cost but these people seem to have plenty of money.

It's not about cost. It's about the anatomy of a horse. You have 500 pounds walking on tiptoes on a bone as big around as a carrot. It's miserably painful if broken, with very high risk of infection, puncturing skin or blood vessels, internal bleeding and never healing. Rehab exists but is extremely difficult, time-intensive, and expensive and still fails most of the time. Even if you invest so much into rehab it's highly likely the leg will never heal properly or keep re breaking and the horse will have a miserable life

A horse with a broken leg has almost zero chance at a recovery. It’s been tried but always ends up with the horse being destroyed a lot of times there ends up being uncontrollable infections. There was an extremely high value horse a few years ago where they tried. After multiple surgeries, untold pain for the horse, and millions spent it had to be destroyed. They weren’t even thinking of getting it back on the track just using him as a stud. It just doesn’t work for horses.
