For Bama it would have to be the Bockrath/Sorenson debacle of running off Gene Stallings

Nah, it would be Bockrath/Sorenson letting football decline so pathetically
-bowing to fan pressure to hire what ended up being a dud coach in DuBose
-letting UA facilities lag behind the SEC (it was bad ask anyone who was there, softball had to raise their own money to build Rhoads stadium, Gymnastics had to do the same to build their gym in the Coliseum)
-enforcing a strict budget on football (football had never had any kind of "budget" to speak of being the crown jewel and doesn't really today either)
-turning a blind eye to booster nonsense. (this speaks for itself)
Gene Stallings was an old man by 1996, had a Super Bowl ring, national championships and nothing left to prove. He was going to ride off into the sunset by the late 90s even in the best of conditions.

Allowing Ray Tanner to blackmail his way into the AD job by threatening to resign as baseball coach and then hiring Chad Holbrook to destroy our baseball program.

Nothing will top this.
Well, maybe Aleva running off Les. And the Florida hurricane schedule switcheroo.
He was on a roll last fall.

^ Mal Moore mostly fixed everything there and that's why he's looked back at so fondly.... well that an getting Nick Saban.
I love Mal Moore, but the Saban hire aside, his coaching hires were pretty lackluster in almost all sports.

Billy Gillispie.
I know the first reaction is letting Bear leave but there was no way Rupp and Bear were going to be able to co-exist. No regrets on that one. And Joker was a logical promotion given his success as an OC.

Bertman not giving Pat Henry what he wanted.
Hiring Mike Archer over Steve Spurrier or Mike Shanahan in '87.

late 1970's Former Mizzou chancellor Barbara Uehling decided it was right for Mizzou to deemphasize athletics and followed by cutting the athletic budgets and pushed Mizzou football into its darkest of dark holes.

Pat Dye forced resignation. AU was set to repeat the decade of the 80s in the 90s but instead we got a couple of great seasons and mediocrity once Dye's recruits were gone. Looking back, Dye could have survived the Ramsey scandal but people were still freaking out over SMU death penalty at the time and AU overreacted.

UGA not hiring Erk Russell instead Goff. UGA wanted him to sign a 10 year contract and he only wanted to coach for 5 or so.

Allowing Pat Dye to retire and not keep him as head coach
"Eric Ramsey was a defensive back for Auburn University's football team in the early 1990s who used a tape recorder to secretly record conversations between his football coaches and Booster "Corky" Frost regarding an illicit player payment scheme. Ramsey's allegations also included racist practices at Auburn, including disapproval of inter-racial dating in the community and segregation of black and white players in the resident athletic dorm. After his tapes were revealed, Auburn received strict penalties and probation for the sixth time in the school's history. This scandal prompted Coach Pat Dye's resignation and preceded the hiring of Samford University football coach Terry Bowden."

Hiring Ed O as a head football coach. Although, he had a great binder, even back then.

Hiring Rick Ray
That doesn't even sniff Mississippi state agreeing to play all those home games in Baton Rouge for years

Hiring Ed Orgeron as head coach. When I heard he was hired I thought I was in a bad dream. I just couldn't grasp that Alleva really did that. Maybe it'll work out though idk..

Leaving the ACC was the worst.
Joining the SEC was the best.

Hiring Carl Torbush because the players wanted him (looking at you Barry Odom).
Hiring John Bunting over Mark Richt.
Not firing John Bunting and hiring Steve Spurrier, who had strong interest in our job.
Firing Butch Davis and offering to cooperate with the never ending NCAA anal probe that's going on 7 years.
Matt Doherty.
