Remember when raising your kids, do NOT buy them a college team's shirt, jersey, hat or ANY memorabilia. Son, you cannot be a fan until you sign your paperwork to attend the school. Then, on that day, you will become a TRUE fan. And when you graduate, you will evolve into a higher level of being known as....alumni.

I mean, honestly, does anyone here root for a high school they didn't go to?
Yeah, pretty sure there are tons of parents, teachers, etc. that do exactly that. Why? Cause for whatever reason they are tied to the school. I grew up in Alabama and even though I never went there I was tied to the University and a fan from a very young age.

Am I a sidewalk Alabama fan? I'm going to the Cotton bowl and I went to the Sugar bowl last year. This is my 9th Alabama game.

I'm pretty sure it was about Alabama fans.

I went to Bama, as did my dad and my siblings, however people who hate on non-alumni fans are stupid.
The vast majority of every fan base is non-alumni, not everyone can go to college, or even afford to, and some people can go but maybe not to their #1 choice.
Growing up cheering for the local college team is no different than growing up in Pittsburgh and cheering for the Steelers.
I agree with this completely. Growing up in a state that had no professional team lots of peope gravitate towards a college team, particularly one with the state name.
For me, I am very grateful that so many reputable colleges gave my students a shot at a better life through academic and athletic scholarships. I am sad this is the last year one of my former students plays at Auburn.

Arkansas doesn't have sidewalk fans because there's no other university or pro team to root for.
No one cares about arkansas state unless they went there. And even state fans are Razorbacks too.

It's a different type of fan. That's all. There are students, alumni, employees, fans, and sidewalkers.
Auburn has sidewalk fans. The difference is they're just better people.

Method Man once asked from the critically acclaimed "Enter the 36 Chambers" in 1993, What exactly is a panty raidah!? You'd much rather be a panty raidah than a sidewalk fan, although it's more than okay to be both.

In Arkansas the concept of fandom being tied to where you went to college doesn't really translate. I went to the U of A and honestly I would say the only people I thought of as "sidewalk fans" were the people who attended Fayetteville from out of state. Like the kids you see screaming at Duke basketball games. I don't care if they go there. They're sidewalk all the way.

so what do you call an 8 year old fan who cheers for his favorite college team?

'sidewalk fan', a term used by someone trying to elevate themselves in the food chain of fandom.

It is simple math. Every single Power 5 fanbase is a vast majority sidewalk alums. I don't know why this keeps coming up. They are all about the same

Well, to be honest, I hate the obsessed fans of NFL teams even more. At least in the college aspect, you have a large percentage of in state talent and kids who you are familiar with from the region going to the college. In the pros, you have bandwagon Steeler fans and Patriot fans. I get cheering for your city, but people who live in LA and cheering for the Steelers? I tend to think those people only cheer for them because of their winning tradition, and in reality have no affiliation with the team at all. Unless you are working for the Steelers or Patriots or Giants or Cowboys(another front running fan base),you don't get to say "We got 5 Super Bowl rings" or "We got Six!" Did you get a ring moron? Then don't claim YOU have a ring. The team you support has the rings. You got hundreds or thousands of dollars of debt based on the team you cheer for.

I went to FIT. Very good engineering school with one of the highest post grad success rates in the county. We just got a football team. It's division three.
I was raised a Gator fan, both parents went there. Been to over 100 games. My fandom is every bit as strong. I didn't go to school based on what football team I loved. Don't have a problem with it.
