Sidewalk fan here. Circumstances arose to where I never made it to South Carolina, yet. I go to the football games every year with my father. Have been since I was 7 years old. I don't claim to be a better fan than any alumni. Nor will I accept that I'm less of a fan. I'm just a different type of fan.

You're just as good. As long as you support your team through thick and thin.

True fandom is determined by your loyalty and passion that you have devoted to your team over your lifetime. There are some morons on this thread.

I attend the University of North Georgia. I've lived and died on Georgia football Saturday's for 10+ years, attended home and road games, etc. But I'm not a REAL Georgia fan right?

By the way, if what some of these idiots say is true, then by going to a school that doesn't have a football team I'm not allowed to be a REAL college football fan, right?

Going to the school does not make you a better fan than me or anyone else. Get the helium of your arses.

You're not answering the question. What you are trying to claim is that you're are not a fan of the United States without serving in the military.

That's the trump card you thought you could throw down to defend yourself from rightfully being called a sidewalk fan of UGA. You were desperate to have something and you were so excited to make that stretch but it's a stupid statement and a stupid train of thought.

I'm just trying to get you to admit that's what you're getting at.

I answered the question and it is a stupid train of thought, I agree. It goes hand in hand with this boards very definition of a sidewalk fan. That is my whole point, my mom never served but I don't think of her as a non American.

If you can't be a fan of a college team without attending it without being labeled something derogatory, then you can't be a fan of anything without serving it as well, be it college, pro, government related. That is the point of my posts.

The term "sidewalk fan" is made up, not real. Fair weather fan is something real and should be frowned upon, which I think sidewalk fan was coined as an alternative to that phrase for this board.

You sir are an a-hole. And people like you are assholes. Putting down blue collar workers is probably one of the most arrogant and dickish things you can do. Tons of Pro teams of all sports are followed and supported by Blue Collar workers, so are many College Teams.

I can't stand people like you. I would love to see you live one year without what blue collar workers do for you.

He's talking about dumbass Alabama fans who never would attend college talking shite to his dad who was a Clemson graduate. That's sidewalk fans in action. They deserve to be made fun of. They're not the salt of the earth, they're shitty sidewalk fans.

And it's not just blue collar. I worked not long ago with this retired USAF guy, late 50s, who wore the big Alabama lanyard around his neck, said Roll Tide every where he went and talked a good bit of trash when he found out I went to Auburn. I asked him, where did you go? He admitted it wasn't Bama. Not sure where it was, wasn't the Academy either. He said his girlfriend's family were all Bama fans, none of them went there either, so he became one... in 2009. I told him he was a sidewalk fan. He didn't like it.

BTW, I'm a union member. So maybe it is a blue collar thing after all. But we wear white collars and a college degree and considerable experience is required to be here, so... maybe it's not just a blue collar thing.

Exactly, I went to UAH, so I guess I can only be Hockey fan even though I've been a Bama fan since I before I can remember.

Very simple. Folks who are totally obsessed with sidewalks and will stop and admire every sideline that has few imperfections....Ive even witness sidewalk fans take hand brushes and gently sweep sidelines of loose debris. If a construction company is pouring concrete for a sidewalk...look around and you will see sidewalk fans in awe of the process. Some of the really big fans have samples of sidewalk sections in their bedrooms....and bathrooms will have sidewalk motiff on the walls.

Okay, maybe I'm not drawing a demarcation line well enough. To me, a sidewalk fan talks trash to alumni from other schools.

If you don't talk shite, you're just a fan imho.

So his dad is somehow exempt from shite talking cause he is a college graduate? Would it be ok if the fans talking shite were Alumni's... This argument is just stupid... and to act like everyone that isn't a college graduate is stupid just goes to show how ignorant a lot of uppity people are.

What if they're just concrete fans? Did you actually ask them what they were admiring? Or are you just making assumptions?

His dad could talk shite. Because he went there. The rest of them have nothing to stand on.

Gotcha. I don't talk shite just to talk shite. If another fan talks shite to me, be he/her alumni or not, I talk shite back, law of the land of fandom. My military card trumps his/her alumni card every time. And if they pull the officer + alumni duo card, I still trump them because I was enlisted and worked for a living.

So then we need to do a cleanse and wipe out about 80% of this boards users? Like, do you know what site you're on?

Again, going to the school does not make you a better fan. Snootier certainly.

So a person that has been a fan of a team for their whole life and cheered them on through thick and thin has no room to talk shite to some person who became a fan of the team just because they went to school there.

What a bunch of horse shite. By your definition some student from another country that attends Alabama that's never even watched a football game is somehow a better fan than one that grew up a fan of the team...

Remember when raising your kids, do NOT buy them a college team's shirt, jersey, hat or ANY memorabilia. Son, you cannot be a fan until you sign your paperwork to attend the school. Then, on that day, you will become a TRUE fan. And when you graduate, you will evolve into a higher level of being known as....alumni.

He didn't say Alabama fans though. You do t think some were Auburn fans? This is what is fricking hilarious about Auburn fans on this board, they want the rest of the world to think that they are a small private school that is the size of a large family, when in fact, they are a state land grant college that for years had a larger enrollment than Alabama.

If not for its "sidewalk" fans they would be less relevant than North Alabama or UAB.

I mean, honestly, does anyone here root for a high school they didn't go to?

I live in a town in Alabama and we have quite a few people around here that didn't go to high school here that go to the games and root for the team.

I imagine that if I moved to another town and were active in the community that I would go root for the local football team.
