I've heard this term for years but it seems there are many different opinions of what exactly constitutes a sidewalk fan.

Fan who didnt go to college or at least attended a much lesser college than the school for which they pull.

People that cheer for a school that doesn't represent them.

I mean, honestly, does anyone here root for a high school they didn't go to?

I don't imagine, but I can see folks cheering for a state school because they do feel it represents them is some form, if nothing more than state pride.

Why would anyone pull for a pro sports team then? None of us have actually played for them.

There's nothing wrong with cheering for a school you didn't attend.

What is tacky, is if your allegiance magically changes to the best team constantly.

If you were a Miami fan in the 80's, a Nebraska fan in the 90's, a USC fan in the 00's and an Alabama fan now, odds are you're an obnoxious moron.

I would be considered a sidewalk fan by most here. However, I've been a LSU fan since the mid 70's and have NEVER pulled for another college. I would think there are more folks like myself than those who constantly change their favorite team.

I went to Bama, as did my dad and my siblings, however people who hate on non-alumni fans are stupid.

The vast majority of every fan base is non-alumni, not everyone can go to college, or even afford to, and some people can go but maybe not to their #1 choice.

Growing up cheering for the local college team is no different than growing up in Pittsburgh and cheering for the Steelers.

Pretty sure all the toothless hillbillies I've seen at UT games didn't go to Tennessee.

Or maybe they did?

I agree w/you here.

I think there is a huge difference between a person that didn't go to the school but has always rooted for it vs one who just likes whatever team is really good at the moment.

To me the latter is more of a sidewalk fan b/c if the team's fortunes falter they tend to walk away from them.

It's not so much the non-alumni fans that cheer/pull for a team that do it with class...that do it because they love the school that this even applies to. It's the non-alumni that trash other fans (alumni) because their team won the game. They don't fricking get it. I didn't go to Auburn because of the football team. I went there for a long list of reasons. A girl that I work with is quite literally the definition of a side walker. She's never attended a UGA game...EVER. She is absolutely awful.

Only school that doesn't have sidewalk fans is Auburn. Everyone in the stands has a masters degree.

Finally, someone that gets it.
