September 2000. Sat in Legion Field for 4 hours watching Bama get waxed 21-0 by Southern Miss. Thick and thin. Two months later, sat in freezing rain for 4 hours watching Bama get beat by Auburn 9-0.
Bad times just make the good times sweeter.

I grew up in Alabama. My dad went to Clemson, but didn't really make a big deal out of football (He's having an awesome time this year in his later years, though!)
He didn't make a big deal out of football because of the Alabama sidewalk fans in rural Alabama. When he moved to Alabama as a young man to be an engineer at a plant, he was amazed at the fandom of the blue collar workers. They would rip on him constantly.
His theory that in the 60s and 70s, when Bear was winning - it was a source of state pride for the common Alabama resident and it simply passed down to the generations. Every team has non-alumni fans, and the poster above is right - without them, SEC football wouldn't be much more than FCS football.
But within the borders of Alabama, its different. You have to live there to experience it. When the guy who makes $10 an hour at the factory lives and dies by the performance of a football team at an academic institution that he did not attend, it might be a mental disorder.

You said you were there when auburn won six straight, right? And you call auburn a cult? They were students chewing for their school. That's not a cult. A cult would be a group of fanatics cheering for a school they never attended.
What was your major?

I would say the only people who really worry about this stuff are those who are fans of losers. They're bitter.
I mean who even cares about fricking fans

State pride sums it up.
I still think the nfl should start a minor league for a host of reasons but one of the benefits would be for sidewalk fansif there was one team per state- it'd be your team finally!

Btw, explain your usa sidewalk fan analogy, I think it'd be entertaining
I posted this already, just a few posts above the first one you quoted of mine, "I did not attend UGA nor any college, I joined the USAF". Unless you served in 1 of the 5 branches of the US military (Coast Guard is Homeland Security not DoD, but I still count them as a branch), you are a sidewalk fan of the USA. <<-- your logic, not mine.

How did Military service get dragged into this conversation? I am sure people know you can join the military and pursue a college degree, The two are not mutually exclusive.

College Football is the minor league of the NFL.

Using this boards screwed up definition to prove a point. Also, even though it is possible to serve and get a degree ( I could not thanks to 9/11 and the aircraft I maintained), you can't attend a University while enlisted, University of Phoenix Online is not what we are talking about here.

You sir are an a-hole. And people like you are assholes. Putting down blue collar workers is probably one of the most arrogant and dickish things you can do. Tons of Pro teams of all sports are followed and supported by Blue Collar workers, so are many College Teams.
I can't stand people like you. I would love to see you live one year without what blue collar workers do for you.

The football team is made up of employees and students at YOUR university, and you cheer for them to fail?
A successful football program absolutely benefits the university as a whole. YOUR university.
And you refer to your own school as "little brother"? Are you demented? Self loathing?

What Exactly is a Sidewalk Fan?
I am not sure why people get so hung up on these labels. I suppose it's because people want to feel superior to others. For those who make it an issue, I have to ask: Why? Does getting some general studies degree make you better than everyone else?
ETA: And this is coming from someone who is a current grad student at UA. Just because I've spent hours upon hours on the campus doesn't mean that I have more of a claim when Alabama wins.

I hope so. That type shite really pisses me off, if you can't tell.

Last I checked, The University of Alabama was funded by tax dollars. I have to write a nice check to Montgomery every year. Therefore, I have a choice to cheer for Alabama, Auburn, and a few other smaller schools. I consider myself a partial owner of each team.

Beats the hell out of me... I respect Mechanics, Roofers, Masons, Road Workers, Factory workers, Pipe Fitters, Welders, Etc a lot more than liberal arts majors. It's part of what is wrong with our nation... a lot people are raised to believe you are some type of disappointment if you aren't a college graduate.
You can be a very successful, hardworking, and intelligent individual without ever attending college.
Blue Collar people are the ones that built this nation. And it's ok for them to be fans of any team they choose.

You're not answering the question. What you are trying to claim is that you're are not a fan of the United States without serving in the military.
That's the trump card you thought you could throw down to defend yourself from rightfully being called a sidewalk fan of UGA. You were desperate to have something and you were so excited to make that stretch but it's a stupid statement and a stupid train of thought.
I'm just trying to get you to admit that's what you're getting at.
