I think one reason "sidewalk" fans do get such a bad rap is that 9 times out of 10 when you meet an a-hole/ignorant fan they are indeed a non-alumni.

But like I said, there's nothing wrong with being a non-alumni fan, just don't be a dickhole.

basically like a guy I know who is a bammer bandwagon sidewalk fan. dude was born and raised in a Town of like 3k in arkansas. has never been to the state of alabama and wears bama apparel.

this is the purest form of a sidewalk fan.

the moment saban leave bama and they don't win every single game that dude will switch to whoever is winning a bunch. or like that queer Ohio st fan in Florida who is like a janitor who was trying to fight people on the twatters

Honest question, if I was accepted into AU but wnt to an FBS school for the possibility of a sport and then couldn't play said sport and maintained my fandom for AU, does that make me a sidewalk fan?

Fan of various styles of sidewalks. Wide ones with bike lanes are very popular. Also, those made of wood, with railings, are popular in retirement communities.

My hierarchy of fandom:

1) Season ticket holders, especially those that travel.

2) Fans who attend games.

3) Fans who follow the team.

4) Casual fans.

5) Bandwagon fans.

In my opinion, being an alumni will rank you higher versus someone in the same rank, but not above someone in a higher rank. For example, an alumni who only casually follows the team would not rank above someone who is a season ticket holder and never misses a game, even if they did not attend the university.

Definition of sidewalk fan

A big fat fricking Pom Pom waiving bama cracker screaming roll tide from the back of a police car after they just got arrested for beating their wife and kids

Just got home from eating in a little town in Louisiana. A couple wearing matching Alabama "Dynasty" t-shirts was seated next to us. I was wearing an LSU hat and we got to talking about college football and the SEC. They mentioned Saban and I threw something out there like not everyone could turn around what Shula left them so quick. They didn't even know who Shula was. That's a sidewalk fan. Most people you encounter on this site will not be sidewalk fans although just looking at certain posts it's hard to think any Arkansas fans here even graduated high school as stupid as they are.

A sidewalk fan is one that changes team affiliation based on which team is doing well or popular at the moment. Hence the term sidewalk fan, they are always on the sidewalk ready to cross the street to root for another team. Same thing as a Bandwagon fan.

People saying it means you didn't attend that University are just stupid. If you are a fan of a team and always a fan of that team, it doesn't matter if you went there or not.

^true for all big fanbases. Without the "sidewalk", stadiums would be 10K or so and coaches would make 200K tops.

I don't think being a fan of a school football team requires anything other than interest from the prospective fan.

It is not surprising that the south has a lot of "sidewalk" CFB fans and human nature being what it is, the teams that win the most will have the largest fan base.

Central Florida is a huge school enrollment wise, but most Floridians are Gators, Noles, or Canes.

I live in the state of Alabama and there are sidewalk fans that couldn't tell you who Coker, Henry, Ridley, Ragland were. There are Auburn fans that can't tell you who Jeremy Johnson, Casnova Mckenzie and Lashlee are. Hell, I know some Auburn fans that didn't know Muschamp was the DC this year. I don't care if you are Alumni or not, but if you only can say whether said team won or not, but not anything else you are a sidewalk fan.
I went to a smaller school in Florida because of health reasons I had to stay close to home and could not attend Florida. Though I can tell you anything about the current team and even teams prior to when I was born. I have attended over 200 games home and away, but can no longer attend games due to health. I do not consider myself bandwagon or sidewalk fan.

It's a ruling-class slur for working-class college football fans that didn't go to the university they cheer for.

I don't imagine, but I can see folks cheering for a state school because they do feel it represents them is some form, if nothing more than state pride.

I think this used to be more common then it is today. For one thing, not as many people went to college in the past.

When I was a kid, it seemed like most people pulled for the flagship university in their state, with fewer exceptions then you see today. I find it interesting how that's changed.

Sidewalk fans are similar to people who steal the valor of military veterans.

Yes, you may live within the boundaries of the USA, but if you didn't serve in the military (or go to the school), don't wear those colors.

So what you're saying is that they shouldn't spend money on the Vols?

How often would Neyland sell out without sidewalk fans?

Without sidewalk fans SEC football would be as popular as FCS football.

Just went to eat out in Metairie at Brooklyn and the family decked out in LSU gear with cammo baseball caps probably were side walkers. Who cares?
