Pretty sure it was assumed he would be our 5th back in nickel sets, but it never got set in stone prior to all this occurring. Most fans assume he was the nickel guy though, myself included.

Why stop with grad transfers. A scholarship is only for 1 year. At the end of the year they've done what was asked of them. Let them transfer, within the SEC and play immediately. Bama will be able to get players in positions of need that have experience. Which QB could Bama take from another SEC team. ?

Apples and oranges. A grad transfer would almost always only have one year of eligibility left. And despite the uproar, they're not really that common. The federal graduation rate in all of FBS is only around 75% with the SEC sitting around the 60s. That's a limited pool when you consider quality of athletes.

I don't even want to think about the mess academically for a kid who transfers from one school to another for four years.

So much misinformation on page 1.

After a player graduates, they can transfer to any school they want and play immediately.

Saban just wanted the rule change because it hurt him this time.

Invoking the rule that all 14 member schools agreed upon is showing his arse?

The NCAA/ SEC rules are written to protect student athletes. Saban tried to use those rules to protect his football team, not Smith. That's why the SEC ruled in Smiths favor. So yes Saban is a giant arse.

SEC bylaws state otherwise.

quote:

The waiver grants Smith an exemption from two SEC bylaws, one that requires a student-athlete to have two years of eligibility remaining and another that requires a transfer going to another conference school to be there one full academic year before they are eligible to play.

I'm sure you're capable of reading the second sentence, but just in case the words are too big:

You graduate. You go elsewhere. You wait, then play. SEC sayz so.

Other than Chris Black going from Bama to Mizzou, are there other cases of grads transferring within the conference? Legitimate question.

Stephen Rivers transferred from LSU to Vandy on a graduate transfer. CLM blessed the transfer.

Not necessarily

Saban invoked the rule that is on the books. nothing more....and where should Saban's loyalty lie?

Les Miles is a good man. Nice, funny, affable, easy going, jovial....I hope he stays at LSU for a long, long time.

This is going to make things very interesting.

If you are one or two players away you could fill spots

You also get to evaluate players in game situations

Teams that are already loaded will benefit greatly with the ability to pick up one or two more needed guys.

I'm glad this happened but I'd like to see it uniformed through the country. After early graduation guys used to stay and work on their masters while still eligible to play. I'd like to know if Peyton would have given Ole miss one year because he graduated in 3 years at UT.

I know one thing, Nick will use this to his advantage.

No he interpreted the rules in his favor. If he was right why did the SEC step in and grant Smiths release. If Smith wasn't a possible starter no one would care. That's the most f'd up thing about this.

Nick gave Rick Clausen a free transfer from LSU. Then he came back and beat his former team. He also let Corey Grant go wherever. Which happened to be Auburn. he took some heat for that one. kinda think thats where he changed his stance.

They didn't. The SEC only got to consider the waiver after Bama gave Smith his release. If Saban really wanted to screw Smith over the SEC could do nothing about it.

First, this was an exception to the rule. The rule still exists. nothing has changed at this time.

Secondly, the rest of the country allows their graduates to go wherever they want. This was a SEC only rule, I believe.

Thirdly, the only players this will affect (As a whole) are players who were not getting, or do not anticipate getting a lot of playing time. If a kid graduates in three years and is starting for his team, he will, more than likely, stay with that team.

quote:

I know one thing, Nick will use this to his advantage.

Again, nothing has changed. But if they DO change the rule, then every coach should take advantage of it. Don't they take advantage of everything already?
