See my edit. Rivers and Black were buried in depth charts not playing. This was not the case with Smith.

Stephen Rivers transferred from LSU to Vandy and was immediately eligible.

Good to know. He eventually went to Nicholls or McNeese, right?

Why should that matter?

Because in those cases it was not detrimental to LSU or Alabama at all. I'm older so I still believe the team is bigger than the individual.

One might think there was a gentleman's agreement of, "we'll allow transfers of non-impact players if we all agree to not swipe each others' good upperclassmen." that had been in place.

Should Smith play in 2016 and fail to complete nine hours of coursework, he will not be eligible for post-season competition. Should he fail to graduate prior to the beginning of the 2018-19 academic year, Georgia would be precluded from requesting a waiver of either the two-year eligibility requirement or the intra-conference transfer rule for a graduate transfer in football until the beginning of the 2021-22 academic year (three years) or Smith’s graduation from the graduate program, whichever comes first.

That actually sounds pretty reasonable.

Maybe this will remind you that these guys attend college to better themselves and forge a better path for their future.

Coaches more or las respected this idea and would not actually pursue kids that were playing at colleges within the conference

Still cant

a lot of coaches will start to pursue good players who have undergraduate degrees from other sec schools

The most important question is why would a starter on Nick Saban's defense want out of Alabama so bad?

So now he was a starter?

Love the ol' shifting narrative.

I'm younger and still believe this is America.

He should be able to play where he wants. Kudos to the SEC

You really think having one year in a system where he is already behind is better for him than starting in a system he already knows and plays every game for most of the snaps. I get you hate Bama and that's fine but it's never about the individual.

Does this make him a starter?

The QB position would be most interesting in that only one guy gets to play.

So if many QBs are smart and finish their degrees as redshirt sophomores, could be real interesting.

I guess offensive line is similar as far as playing time for backups.

This case is a DB who was certain to be on the field for meaningful snaps. Very unusual in my eyes.

This is probable and reasonable to assume. And it certainly will make the first meeting between Nick and Kirby very interesting. I definitely think this had more to do with Saban not wanting Smith (or anyone else) to be able to follow Kirby

Yes. In the nickel and dime packages. I'm sure of it.

He is playing for his old coaches, so he is probably pretty familiar with how he will play and be utilized

We have a winner. The fact that people have an issue with this is insane.
