just to nitpick, but similar, it's not just waiving the year, they also sign off on the particular school
Saban signed off on UGA but not to waive the year. Again, the rule the league has agreed upon.

He tried to use the waiver as a pressure point to keep Smith at bama.
yeah?...and?....as pointed out, Smith was considered a valuable player who was a starter in the majority (not all) of our schemes

Had Saban signed the waiver
He is not required to sign anything

(which coaches do for schools they arent playing against quite often)
Good for them.....Saban declined for obvious reasons.

What you are referring to is the contact permission, not the waiver
quote:

yes and the waiver is part of the process
quote:
He is not required to sign anything
He or Bama is required to "sign" the waiver of release if they want to release or not release.

There's actually a rule & paper process in place. It's not insane people as a problem, change the rule.

No. Not inside conference without either A) sitting out a year or B) having two years of eligibility remaining.
True. But they could go to other teams in other conferences. I can't think of a single one that Georgia has lost. Now all of a sudden everybody is going to leave?
As for all the recruits now are going to go to Alabama....don't you have to have a scholarship available? Does Alabama routinely undersign classes? Or, how many 4 and 5* players is Alabama going to process to get these graduate players that could not win a starting job at the school they are currently at?
It just doesn't make sense!

I just hate the way the kid bitched and moaned, playing his way with the media just to try to get some media exposure on his side. Whatever though its still not gonna stop the Tide from rolling.
Lol
Idc that Smith went to UGA I just don't like all the pissing and moaning to get his way.

Nobody should be able to restrict a student/athletes opportunities after they have graduated.
We have a winner. The fact that people have an issue with this is insane.
Why stop with grad transfers. A scholarship is only for 1 year.
At the end of the year they've done what was asked of them. Let them transfer, within the SEC and play immediately.
Bama will be able to get players in positions of need that have experience. Which QB could Bama take from another SEC team. ?

If people don't like the rule then put it on the fricking agenda for next year in Destin.
I would really like to see all of the other 13 coaches and AD's put up or shut up on the issue.

if coaches dont like the waiver process being placed upon them, they should ask to change the rules.

Maurice Smith is a decent football player. Bama has elite football players ready to go.

Well, if that is the analogy a LSU guy wants to use, so be it. But I think there are plenty of rats left on that ship to keep it afloat!
I don't understand all the angst by some of the Alabama fans and some of the disdain from the Alabama rivals.
It was Nick Saban's prerogative to deny the transfer. He did nothing wrong. Smith took it to the court of public opinion. It's not what most of us would do or what we prefer, but that is his prerogative. Enough pressure was put on Alabama that Saban (Or somebody at Alabama) decided enough is enough and they relented.
End of story. We have games coming up in 3 weeks. I think we would all do better if we concentrated on those and forgot this whole mess happened.

And Alabama will be just fine without Smith...and hopefully Georgia will be a little bit better.
Wouldn't it be a kick in the teeth if he turned around and decided to go to some team outside the SEC after all of this!
