Is that a polite way of calling me an idiot? How nice of you. I'm not overreacting this is what I believe.

Most Ole Miss fans. 95% of them even, would not be OK with the name changing. I'm not, I doubt anyone on this board is.

This...and 95% of our fan base isn't losing their shite at the moment. Which means there are a minority of people who are vastly overreacting.

The person reacting does not have the ability to determine if he is over-reacting or not. That's for other's to decide. No one in history has overreacted if you ask that person.

How is it overreacting to stand up for what 95% of people believe on a message board?

This is a message board. The topic is Ole Miss on the way out? I'm merely discussing my viewpoint but you would make it seem that I'm about to start a riot.

Yet the administration seemingly could careless

The administration cares a great deal. And they're in the very unenviable position of having to fund a university, while at the same time, acknowledge and respect a history that is powerfully meaningful to its alumni.

When failed faculty position searches happen semester upon semester at Ole Miss (which they do), due to top researchers not wanting to be a part of an image--correct or erroneous--which the current Ole Miss faculty has to battle and defend regularly, your administrators wouldn't be doing their jobs if they didn't do all they could to make your university better and more competitive. They would, in fact, be failing you and the power of your degrees.

Many years ago I was employed as a student worker for the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. My shitty job consisted of phoning Former Students who at one time had donated to the university, but stopped going so (for various reasons). I'll never forget a Colonel who hung up the phone on me, after saying, "I stopped giving to that goddamnned university when they let women in. It'll never be the same." Same was said about allowing "civilians" to enroll. Bottom line: Our administration had to make the choice to do what it knew had to be done, in order for Texas A&M University to evolve into a world-class institution.

I know you want to tell me to "frick off," but take solace in the big picture: Simply putting "The University of Mississippi," rather than "Ole Miss" on your letterheads and mark/comm materials won't change a lick of who you are. On the contrary, it makes you look intelligent and strategic.

Its really not. It was the nickname of the yearbook and then became a nickname for the school.

Ok, then why was the yearbook named "Ole Miss"? I heard the same "slave master" name origin story hunting in NLA from some proud rebel redneck from Natchez.

My god, these meltdowns are fricking awesome. I mean for frick's sake, have half of these people even read what they're flipping out about?

The chief communications officer for the university even went so far as to come out and say this to quail the lunatic fringe...
quote:

Tom Eppes, chief communications officer for the university, said the sixth point does not represent any change in the school's policy regarding the use of the nickname.

"It was a clear affirmation of the term 'Ole Miss,' " Eppes said.

And here's the link... Ole Miss nickname lives on

We have some nuts in our fan base

This is the polite way of telling you that it takes unified support to impose your will on an administration, and that as long as you burn bridges, you won't have that support.

For instance, If the administration had taken From Dixie With Love away without giving the students the opportunity to not say "The South Will Rise Again" then the backlash would have ruined them. However, the vocal minority that decided they were going to do whatever they wanted to, ensured that it was removed by losing support of the reasonable people who liked "FDWL"

I'm moved to tears when I hear the bum bum bum of "Battle Hymn of the Republic", but I couldn't stand with the assholes who thought it was okay to yell a KKK slogan in the middle of the song.

How about the administration both:
A) Taking away the mascot and then
B) Giving students a "choice" between three options they selected?

Some choice.

Different administrations. I'll give you that neither move was particularly fair, but I can also tell you that support for Col. Reb wasn't great enough to save him.

The most underhanded thing that the administration has done in the past 20 years was ban the confederate flags at games, it was also the bravest and smartest thing they've done.

I disrespect the Dan Jones administration so much for using the students as a scape goat when the Jones administration wanted to change the mascot and make the band stop playing From Dixie with Love.

It was a cowardly move to shield themselves from the backlash of pissed off alumni and fans.

The way the Jones administration manipulated those two situations will forever foster distrust between the Ole Miss fan base and the Jones administration.

The people who act like the above instances aren't the root cause for why so many OM fans overreact when Dan Jones mentions making changes are being at best disingenuous and at worst ignorant of your own fan base.

At what point does the administration change to school "nickname" to something else? I really think it will happen at some point, just like all the Injun sports teams are having to change their names.
