History happened, trying to white wash it doesn't accomplish anything good.

That was well said.
quote:

When failed faculty position searches happen semester upon semester at Ole Miss (which they do), due to top researchers not wanting to be a part of an image--correct or erroneous--which the current Ole Miss faculty has to battle and defend regularly,

But this is based on the assumption that top researchers choose not to work at Ole Miss because it's called Ole Miss and not because it doesn't offer many fields that demand a lot of research dollars.

OM has a small engineering school and no presence that I am aware of in the tech sector. I'd say science fields command most of the research dollars and our medical school probably generates the majority of our research dollars.

If the Hayden Planetarium was located at Ole Miss, Neal deGrasse Tyson would give 0 shits that the school's name is Ole Miss. Barack Obama debated McCain at Ole Miss. He didn't refuse to debate because the school is named Ole Miss.

Changing the name isn't going to change the past. People need to move on. It's Ole Miss. If you don't like the name or it offends you....go to one of the many other colleges and universities out there. But know this.......they all have pasts too.

The school needs to stop worrying about hurting somebody's feeling. And for those that say it will only help to land better recruits in the future.....I don't believe that. First off.....athletics isn't worth losing your whole heritage and tradition. Second.....what happens if we get rid of it and we still stay mediocre in sports. What gets taken then?

Might as well change the university logo too. I mean.....the Lyceum is where all the shite went down that night of the riots. Why remind everyone of that dreadful night with that logo. (Sarcasm)

It hasn't kept you from landing great recruits, and it has not kept minorities from attending.
