so did he decide not to drive or did Alabama nation get "lucky" and he passed out?

Saban looked at the schedule and told them he wasn't driving. If they were playing FAU instead he would have been given his DUI and served his suspension.

I'd be curious to know how many people in this thread could have gotten a dui before- honestly not just spinning yarns of their sainthood.

I could have back in college and even after. Thankfully I'm wiser now and would never drive under the influence. It's definitely dumb but dumb happens unfortunately. Since the guy wasn't even driving I don't have a problem with Saban's decision.

So why do you just assume he did?

So you would agree that all those players who failed drug and steroids tests and were suspended from play also should've been given a break? They didn't hurt anyone.

What about players taking money for playing or merchandise? They never hurt anyone, and yet they were suspended.

These are against NCAA rules, so yes they should be suspended.

Falling asleep in a car is not though.

I don't care if players take money.

I really don't care if a player smokes weed.

And regardless, the fact is he has got a DUI charge. You're argument is that "well he didn't hurt anyone" so who gives a rat's arse?

He got a DUI on a technicality. The law can deal with him as they please, but I don't think he should be suspended for what he actually did.

he said they submitted him to 48 hour in-patient evaluation to see if he has an issue/problem, said they have education planned and punishment planned for the kid, but that he (player) did what they tell them to do - don't drive. Also pointed out how this will impact the kid and his future moving forward. I swear, some of you are so blinded by your hatred for the man that you fail to see anything he does as positive.

I don't know. Could it be that no suspension for a DUI isn't positive?????

Alabama does not. UGA is one of the few I know of in the SEC that has a specific and mandatory punishment pre-determined for each specific offense for athletes.

My school threw any student out for at least the semester. Missing games would have been the least of my concerns. I will say that you could make a better case for automatically suspending for DUIs than for failed drug tests, just going by the severity of the crime.

Nope, they play FSU.

are we gong to pretend that eveyr school doesn't pick and choose how to suspend players in similar situations. Urban Meyer was the king of benching players in game 5 against directional U for an offense that occurred in the offseason. All our programs are guilty of it.

Fake news.

What was really said.....

quote:

“Da’Shawn put himself in a bad situation, obviously made a mistake being where he was at the time,” Saban said following practice Thursday. “But the fact that he didn’t drive the car — which is what we tell the players not to do. It’s not OK with me that he was drinking, and that’s a behavioral issue that needs to be addressed and we will address it.

“But the fact that he didn’t drive the car, he did not put other people at risk — which is to me the most significant thing when you drive under the influence. But he didn’t drive. But they had every right to do what he did.”

How is this relevant? We also don't know if he planned on killing someone that night too. Does he need to be punished for anything he might have done, but have no evidence of?

That's not my argument. He is being punished. You seem to think that the only thing considered a punishment is playing time. The justice system will punish him for the DUI. He is being punished by Saban for being so heavily intoxicated at 4:30AM that he was put in that situation. Saban is not bound by criminal statutes when doing what is best for his program, no should he be.

You are starting to sound really unintelligent. Both of those examples are NCAA offenses that directly affect the game. A DUI is not an NCAA offense. It is a criminal offense. One has required NCAA punishments The other does not.

Saban has been fairly "lenient" on punishment for the past 5-6 years. And yet he still runs a relatively disciplined program. When you have been at a school for a decade and have the track record he has, you don't have to be a huge disciplinarian to maintain control of a program. He already has the respect of the team. They know who is boss. It is coaches new to programs who have not proven themselves that usually have to play the tough guy role to establish their authority (see Lincoln Riley kicking off a new QB signee with no priors for a publix intox charge).

It doesn't matter if he was driving or not. He was never going to be suspended.

Nick Saban is a pussy when it comes to player discipline. He cares more about winning games.

After reading his quote it's clear that saban is not happy about the dui and is just glad he didn't make the situation stemming from poor decisions worse by compounding it with more bad decisions.

I see no problem with that quote at all.

And yet he has a very disciplined program. Would you say Saban has lost control of his team and locker room like Urban Meyer or Gene Chizik did? Isn't that the whole point of a football coach disciplining his players in excess of what the justice system already does?
