Yea, 53 year old Nick Saban in year 4 at LSU is pretty much the same situation as 64 year old Nick Saban in year 9 at Alabama.

It is pretty much the same. The only difference is that he has already given the NFL a shot. he never would have left LSU for another college and won't leave Alabama for another college either.

it's a little bit of a shame for him that it worked out the way it did, he could have been our Woody Hayes, our Bob Neyland, Knute Rockne, what have you, for the rest of history. At Alabama he will always be just another great coach and never will be Bear Bryant.

I don't think that's true at all. As a younger fan, I definitely hold him in higher regard than Bear Bryant. I would imagine if he coaches here another 6 years or so, those 35 and under will mostly feel the same way.

I'm talking long term, big picture legacy.

Not if he wins more NC's than Bear.

You really don't think he'll have that type legacy? If he adds another championship or two, I think he'd be on the Mount Rushmore of all time greats.

Maybe but evene then:

A: He's not a bama boy like bear was and

B: Bama wasn't even the best SEC program in history at the time Bear took over. He elevated and established that program in a way that can't really be done at Alabama today.

It is a different age now.

Not sure anyone could ever surpass Bryant as a legend.

Bear died before a lot of us were even born. We'll just have two legends.

No, he'll never be the guy who built Alabama football the way Woody built Ohio State, Neyland built Tennessee, and so forth. He could have been that guy at LSU and that was actually a big part of the reason he took the job in the first place

I think Bama was, to be honest

Bear played on an NC team at Bama

Circa 1958, Tennessee was the best all time SEC program.

Let's see the numbers. Bama was the first SEC team to break into the national picture, and dominated the league in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. In the 50s we fell off. Bear was RE-building.

I'm just going by the Bear Bryant biography I read, The Last Coach, by Alan Barra.

it's a great read if you haven't picked it up. The best coach bio I've ever read for sure.

Saban will never have the stadium named after him like bear did, and will always be just one of the statues up in that park outside BDS.

If he had stayed at LSU, he could have been THE guy.

Sumbitch. He ruined Christmas 2004. And just about every Christmas since.

I'm loading up my tank with Spike 80DF right now.

I'm madder than the road raging a-hole that tailed me this morning shaking his fist and unloading 8 million F bombs per second in my direction.

On hold for Finebaum right now.

Only because Bryant-Saban-Denny stadium is too long, and the oldtimers are not going to let go of Denny (a former Pres who did a lot to build the football program).

You're pretty far off here. Saban is not just another coach.

Of course he's not just another coach. Mike Duose doesn't have a statue outside BDS.

But you're not being realistic if you don't think he could have meant more to LSU than he can at Alabama. You've already had a bunch of great coaches establish your program as one of the top 2 or 3 all time. We've had a lot of "very good" coaches but have never had THAT guy like Saban could have been.

That's fair enough. I'm just saying how we view him. He's not in the shadow of Bear. He's more like the New Bear.

True.

But I'll be honest. I don't think Saban would have had the same kind of success at LSU had he stayed another 5 years as he's had at Bama for the last 5 years.

Impossible to prove or disprove. Purely hypothetical.

Just what my gut tells me from observing LSU at its peak vs. Bama at its peak. Saban had his struggles at LSU. We tend to forget about them now but they were there for anyone to see in 2002 and 2004 (getting blasted by Fran 31-0). Did he learn that much more between 2004 and 2007 and that's why he's got Bama where they are now? Or is he just able to get more out of Bama players than he could LSU players? Maybe a bit of both. Doesn't hurt that he can recruit a lot of LSU's turf either.

Alabama hasn't had back to back losing seasons (actual results on field) since 1958. Can any other school in the SEC say that? No matter who the coach is, they have enough talent to win at least half their games.

I hear what you're saying now and I agree.

Saban would have been the Bear Bryant of LSU had he stayed.

Instead, he will be (pretty much there) "Bear II" at Bama.

Sounds like he is okay with that.

If he can believed this time. I honestly do believe him. Because I know that God loves ESPN and hates LSU. It's why He let us have two national titles and a Saints Super Bowl victory but offset that with a hurricane for the ages and an oil spill for the ages. Well, at least we got to taste the Promised Land for a while.

Such is life.
