Based on potential, I'd put these teams on the list.

Texas
USC
Florida
Florida State
Georgia
LSU
Alabama
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Penn State
Michigan

potential does not make you an elite program. Its what your program does and how consistently you can do it against the best competition. Miami and FSU are not elite programs right now because they can't achieve it.

Agreed. Michigan isn't at the top right now, but I'd still consider them elite because they've been successful over a far longer period of time.

I don't know. I'm not really convinced that Michigan is well set up for the future. At some point in time, faltering records do start translating into reduced potential.

Once you go that long with losing, people start wanting to play at other places like Wisconsin, Penn State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Illinois, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Purdue, etc.

I really don't see what's going to steer Michigan permanently above those other schools into "elite" status. I see them as a program that will only reel in Top 10 recruiting classes on very rare occasions.

With FSU, on the other hand, it's very easy to see how they could quickly catapult back into the scene.

Auburn #17 alltime..just haven't cashed a NCAA Title in the modern era, or say last 25 to 40 years.

I look at things such as recruiting grounds, stadium atmosphere, fanbase, and tradition.

Miami has more potential than some of those teams, simply because of South Florida's recruiting base.

Michigan will be better than all those teams, save maybe Ohio State, by next year.

You may be right. I'd rather coach Florida State though.

Then Tennessee may very well be up here. The fact that Tennessee isn't a great recruiting state itself hides the fact that Tennessee is still surrounded by elite talent.

Thats what I called a storied program then. They haven't been really elite in a while but yes they definitely have the potential to get back there pretty easily. Look at Bama a few years ago, then they were on probation for a while and were having their troubles, they weren't elite but were definitely still storied, but now look where they are, definitely an elite program because they have achieved it on the field.

You think Michigan is just gonna sh!t a magical Defense, and surpass Wisky or Penn St in a year's time?

Wisconsin will have at least a little drop off after this year. Penn State sucks right now, I'm not sure how Michigan screwed game up so badly. I don't think Michigan loses much. They'll be much better defensively next year.

Elite is a pretty subjective term but if your going to call Michigan and Notre Dame elite and not LSU then the word "elite" has lost any real meaning.

Notre Dame is 2-11 in bowl games since 94. With the only victory over a BCS school coming against A&M in the 94 cotton bowl. There other victory was against hawaii in 2008 hawaii bowl. There last NC came in 1988 and their last "BCS" bowl came in the 1992 sugar bowl(1991 season).

Michigan has 1 national championship over the last 60 years! And they havent won a BCS bowl since the 2000 orange bowl.

That's not true. LSU has won 2 BCS National Championships.

Does it hurt you so much that you can't say it? 1 1/2 is a flat out lie. And the only joke is that the fan of a team that has never even sniffed one is talking smack.

I think a program that has tons of potential to be great is Georgia. I'll never understand how Florida has won like 18 of the last 21 against them. Georgia is a very attractive school for a recruit and a coach.

Michigan has really only sucked since 2008, and that's because they had to undergo major offensive style changes. They've still been better than all the Big 10 teams save OSU this decade.

Agreed. And most of that record is because Spurrier/Meyer have been vastly superior to anyone Georgia has had over that time span.

Fair enough. Unless they lose a lot on offense, I have no problem standing by it.
