I think Arkansas is in a tough spot being in the SECw making it a not as attractive job.

Kind of a two steps forward, two steps holding pattern for a coach. Being in the SEC-Wis a prestige post, but it means your job is that much harder. Bielema is actually a pretty good coach, but his record looks like he should be coaching Pee-Wee. It's not his fault -- just too much competition both on the field and for recruiting talent (in addition to being in a state that traditionally doesn't pump out a lot of high-level CFB players) to make the job particularly attractive for any coach with a thin skin. Whatever else you can say about Bret, he's been able to tough out the difficulties that come with being an Arkansas football HC. It's worth admiring.

Well said, some coaches love the chance to play in the toughest division in football but its not for everyone

or that the last coach left a dearth talent outside of like 4 players and the program in shambles. But yeah let's forget that part.

I would drop Arkansas out of the top 25. Good facilities and fan support but hours from any consistent recruiting source. Horrible in state talent, you have to play in Little Rock every year, and you have to be better than Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and aTm in any given year just to win your division. I would rank Ole Miss ahead of Arkansas due to the in state talent available. Arkansas is a slightly better Mizzou clone.

I don't think that makes the job more attractive though. Just my .02

What would be your logic for Arkansas over Ole Miss?

The contract to play there is over soon and not likely to be renewed

Mississippi as a state has more talent but Ole Miss has more schools fighting for the recruits in the state.

Arkansas in state talent is basically non existent though. Even TN has surpassed y'all. Ole Miss recruits out of state pretty well.

Fwiw I don't think either are top 25 jobs

Nothing you said was wrong, just stating that some see that as a great opportunity.

I recognize that Arkansas in state talent sucks, not arguing that but recruiting is just one factor. Why has Arkansas had more success since joining the SEC?

probably the fact that Arkansas has better facilities, more money, and consistently puts out better teams

OSU has made 2 really good hires at HC.
that's irrelevant. They are talking about right now.

No way Texas is that high right now.

The quality of a job is pretty static. Texas being down right now really doesn't have much of an effect on how good of a job it is.

Arkansas should easily be a top 4 job, not sure what ESPN was thinking putting them so far down the list.

I'm not forgetting anything. The factors I mentioned don't change simply because of the coach. They're still relevant. Yes, Petrino (and JLS) left the cupboard bare in lots of places, but that's because his style of play focused on certain types of offensive schemes. He essentially tried to outmaneuver the larger and stronger teams in the SEC rather than confronting them head-on, and that worked...some of the time. Bielema -- and the following is why I consider him a much better coach than Petrino -- decided to take the time and inevitable flack that comes with losing to actually develop a program capable of playing the Bamas and LSUs of the SEC in a straight-up slugging match. Even if Petrino had left all the talent in the world, the talent he used wasn't the sort of talent Bielema uses.

Agreed, it was going to be a painful switch anyway, the lack of talent just made it tougher.

True. Although we can still talk about the defensive talent he left behind.
