If Cal doesn't really get in his head and push him, he definitely doesn't make it to a NBA roster. So he's capable of dealing with lesser talent.

Only in Kentucky is a solid NBA player considered a lesser talent. Good problem to have but not really illustrative of your point.

Darius Miller? He was at a point the year after Gillispie he was passing up shots and barely able to break a rotation. He wasn't even being looked at for NBA until Cal came along.

So now Cal has to coach the perfect player in order to be COY?

Hey you are the one who singled WCS out and how much Cal has coached him up. I just asked why can't he teach him how to shoot a basic jumper?

So, once again, Cal has to coach the perfect players to be COY? No other 7 foot big men have trouble with a "basic" jumper?

I guess you missed the discussing why Cal should/shouldn't be coach of the year part?

Why are you now following me around in threads about Kentucky to bitch about me talking about Cal/Kentucky? Weirdo.

ETA: And to address you edit, it's a message board. Where people debate things. OH NO.

I guess you missed where I posted in the thread earlier.

You attention seek worse than Joxy. I promise I am not following you. It is the mentality the UK fans have right now, soon as somebody says anything about UK hoops.

Your dumbass jimmies are rustled over a conversation I was having with someone else about what this thread is about. And you addressed me directly, so yes I responded.

And you've been doing this a lot lately about anywhere I post. So do us all a favor, take your stalker cap off, and go the frick away if you have nothing better to contribute then bitching about a Kentucky fan posting about Cal in a thread about Cal. Your schtick is fricking tired and for someone who wants to call me an attention whore you can't help but follow me around.

I'm not disagreeing with you. The point is that a guy who makes the NBA isn't a lesser talent. He might have had confidence problems even mechanical problems, but he was not a lesser talent if he's capable of being an NBA rotation guy.

I meant lesser than the first round draft pick types. Since the argument is they're apparently so good he just has to "roll the balls out" and they get drafted. Miller wasn't ranked that high coming out of HS. It took some work to develop him into a NBA player.

Cal can coach. No question in my mind. I just wanted to point out that the lesser talents that end up in Lexington are guys who won't be lottery picks. He isn't team balling his way to the tournament with guys that mostly won't see an NBA roster like Brey for instance. Doesn't mean he can't coach, just means he's a helluva recruiter.

"I've always felt he had unlimited potential," Hurley said, "but this transformation from last year to this year has been incredible. He's completely changed his mindset about where he's playing the game of basketball. I didn't think he could go from shooting 3s to being this dominant around the basket. I want to write John Calipari a note to say this is the most amazing transformation I've seen. "We played against [Andrew] Bynum twice, and Towns is much further along in his career at the same stage. In my mind, he's the No. 1 pick in the draft. [Duke's Jahlil] Okafor is a more polished offensive player, but Towns is a better defender, rebounder and foul shooter, and is a bit more versatile now. He's personable, a great interview, plays with passion, and has a more outgoing personality than most big kids do. You can put him on the Knicks and he's an NBA All-Star." I guess Cal had nothing at all to do with this transformation.

A 7 foot All American playing against college competition is good around the basket. You are right, Calipari is one hell of a coach for this to have ever happened.

There's as much coaching in getting top guys to put aside the egos and buy into your system

I would think this is taken care of during recruiting. Or did we think that Kentucky players weren't aware there are countless other McDonald's All Americans they'll be sharing the court with? "Oh shite, coach. I didn't realize there would be other great players here!"

Come on. I'll give him credit on the recruiting trail for that. If problems manifest after that, it's on the players. They know what kind of program they're getting in to.

Know how I know you're a Kentucky fan?

recruiting is part of coaching.

Absolutely it is. And Cal has such a mountainous hurdle...trying to get kids to come to KENTUCKY to play basketball.

quote:

He has a team that's already set a historic win record, could potentially go undefeated, and has a historically good defense.

All very true and all very in line with what everyone expected this year.

He deserves it as much as anyone else.

Not really. That's like saying that the Yankees winning the world series with a $150MM payroll would be just as impressive as the f'ing Marlins winning it with $50MM.

So because he does a part of his job better than anyone in the country, he shouldn't get COY?

No love for Bo Ryan in this thread? For all intents and purposes, he has accomplished the same thing as Cal (back to back Final Four teams) with inferior talent (not a single one-and-done).
